Dystopia, opposite to utopia, is a non-existing place where people are unhappy and in despair because of a certain reasons such as apocalyptic event. Often in a dystopian world, people often lose the ability to speak and are in despair. John Wyndhams’ The Day of the Triffids, is a post-apocalyptic novel, which deals with blindness and new class system due to most people getting blind caused by a comet debris. The protagonist, Bill Masen, who missed the comet debris, resulting most of the people on earth blind, adapts to the new law and policy that was made by the non-blinds. Cormac McCarthys’ The Road is a post-apocalyptic novel about a father and his son traveling to find a safe shelter and food for them. Wherever they go, they cannot come to rest because there are so many ‘bad guys’ that wonders around killing or raping people. Later on in the story, the father dies and the son meets a family who is appears to be the only ’good guys’ in the story. Russell Hobans’ Riddley Walker is a story happening a long time after the catastrophe. Riddley, the protagonist, is trying to find how to make the nuclear weapon that was used before the catastrophe happened. In all three books, language is used to depict the state of the society’s well-being which is shown by amount of time passed after the catastrophe, the use of loss of names and knowledge, and belief.
John Wyndhams’ The Day of the Triffids, is set in a time period where the world just experienced catastrophe, thus language is largely intact. Unlike other two novels, Cormac McCarthys’ The Road and Russell Hobans’ Riddley Walker, The Day of the Triffis’ state of the society is relatively better since less time has passed from the catastrophe The language used in The Day of the Triff...

...nced our language is, the better the state of society is and it effects how we think of certain issues.
Language is one of the most important thing in our culture since it allows us to pass on knowledge and can be used as power. Language can act as power when someone change the information that we know which make the person the only one with proper knowledge. If there was no language, our history would have changed dramatically, also even though we had language, the history of our culture might no be true. Names are also another important thing in our culture since it gives us information on what an object is meant to do. Therefore, in a society, the society’s condition is represented by language which can be affected or shown by how much time is passed after the catastrophe, whether an object or person has a name or not, and the belief system that the world has.
Language is our power and expression is our freedom. Through a puff of air, we are able to communicate and influence the environments that surround us. Over the course of time humans have evolved, but by the means of language, humans have matured into humanity. The possibility of thought and emotions such as empathy show the ability to think with complexity. A crucial element that helps Suzanne K. Langer’s illustrate the essence of humanity throughout her essay “Language and Thought.” Langer thoroughly depicts what sets humans apart from the rest of the animal kingdom by explicitly stating “The line between man and beast […] is the language line” (120). Consequently, this implies that if a person is declined the freedom of language they are hardly considered human. Many people around the globe have had their voices silenced due to corrupt governments and the oppression of their culture. These individuals are subjected to the devastating effects of the loss of language, which in turn, translates to the loss of power. Language is our foundation for hopes and opportunity, for with out it a person is shell of possibility that is subjected to a passive existence.
In the novel, Fahrenheit 451 written by Ray Bradbury demonstrates why illiteracy can lead to a dystopia. On the contrary, the short story The End of the whole Mess written by Stephen King reveals why having too much literacy can be horrific to the world. Steve jobs once said, “The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.” In both the novel and the story people try to set up certain rules or are born with talent that is driven to change the world for good, nevertheless they end up in dystopias.
A dystopian text is a fictional society which must have reverberations of today’s world and society and has many elements and rules that authors use to convey their message or concern. Dystopian texts are systematically written as warnings use to convey a message about a future time that authors are concerned will come about if our ways as humans continue, such as in the short stories called The Lottery by Shirley Jackson and The Pedestrian by Ray Bradbury. Dystopias are also written to put a satiric view on prevailing trends of society that are extrapolated in a ghoulish denouement, as in the case of the dystopian film Never Let Me Go directed by Mark Romanek. Dystopian texts use a variety of literary devices and filming techniques to convey their message, but in all three texts there is a main protagonist who questions the rules of society, and all citizens carry a fear of the outside world who adhere to homogenous rules of society.
Language can bring people together but can also isolate. The United States is known as a melting pot, not only does that refer to culture but also the many different languages. We know of language barriers, but very seldom do we think of the language barriers within our borders. Even with the language barriers it solidifies the need for a national language, the United States of America should allow the freedom to express one’s culture while maintaining English as our national language, therefore offering common ground to its citizens.
Language has the power to influence and reshape our thoughts and actions. In Anthem, by Ayn Rand, there is a society which controls the language of everyone in it. Under the World Council, everyone is to follow the many rules put in place and no one even tries to break them. There is no “I” in their language, there is only “we”. With the power to influence and reshape people, language has a big impact on our thoughts and actions.
The Hunger Games and Fahrenheit 451 are both great examples of dystopian fiction. A dystopia is a fictional world that takes place in the future that is supposed to be perceived as a perfect society, but it’s actually the opposite. Other things that a dystopian society might display are citizens both living in a dehumanized state and feeling like they’re constantly watched by a higher power. Dystopias are places where society is backwards or unfair, and they are usually are controlled by the government, technology, or a particular religion. The Hunger Games and Fahrenheit 451 are both in the dystopian fiction genre because the societies within them show the traits of a dystopia. Both of them also have characters that go against the flow of the normal world.
Before World War I, the literary term known as the Utopia emerged. Many people believed that society would be happier if the individual made sacrifices for the “common good”. However, the war changed all of that. Society began to fear governments in which everyone was the same and was ruled by a dictator. Thus, the genre of the dystopian novel emerged. “Dystopian novels show that any attempt at establishing utopia will only make matters much worse.” (Dietz, 1996) Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and 1984 by George Orwell are considered classic examples of this genre by such critics as Frank Dietz, Beaird Glover, and Donald Watt. These distinct novels both warn against utopia through the portrayal of the protagonist begins as part of a society in which the individual is non-existent, come into contact with influences that cause their rebellions, and eventually come into contact with some upper hand of the government.
Language is more than words and the ability to communicate. It allows the world to express thoughts and ideas, but along with that comes influence and authority—matter that run society. Language impacts society in various ways, both bad and good. Everyday life, even texts and films, portray the effect of language. Whale Rider, “The Myth of the Latin Woman”, and The Crucible demonstrate that language is power.
Language is universal, but there are different meanings and sounds, which vary from one culture to another. In China citizens speak many languages, but about 94% speak the Chinese language. The difference in dialects was overcome by the written word and eventually a version of Mandrin became the “official speech” (The Cambridge Illustrated History of China, 1996,p.304). In America there are many ethnic groups with many varieties of language. The U.S. was created through many people from different countries migrating to the new states. In the U.S. there is an “official speech” which is the English language. The language of both these countries are not only different in meaning and sound, but also reflect the way in which the people in these societies live, believe, and function.
Dystopian novels are written to reflect the fears a population has about its government and they are successful because they capture that fright and display what can happen if it is ignored. George Orwell wrote 1984 with this fear of government in mind and used it to portray his opinion of the current government discretely. Along with fear, dystopian novels have many other elements that make them characteristic of their genre. The dystopian society in Orwell’s novel became an achievement because he utilized a large devastated city, a shattered family system, life in fear, a theme of oppression, and a lone hero.
Literature is a form of art that is created simply with written symbols strung together to form words. It is the meaning behind these words which gives literature its finesse. It can show us the past, the future, and the present. Whether it be prose, drama or poetry, all literature speaks for itself and gives way to what the author wants to express. One branch of fictional literature is dystopian literature. Dystopias offer unique insight on what the future may become. It can be seen as a way for a creator to envision a terrible world unlike their own - or one that is all too similar. Such is the case with Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s short story: “Harrison Bergeron” which depicts a caricature of America predicated on contemporary issues; it satirizes
Dystopian Literature is a type of fiction literature that represents a bad view of the future and its people on it. It is basically a not so perfect world, where the people in charge and the government control everything in the general public; also where the conditions of life are really horrible from depression and everything else that comes along. Three famous works of dystopian literature include Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, and Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell.
Even though there are advantages as well as disadvantages, the need for international language for communication, politics, economics and security is necessary and English is the best “language candidate” for that function. English is a language spread all over the world and it is used by millions and millions of speakers. According to my opinion, people should use English as a tool to communicate with all cultures but every country must keep their culture and language is a great part of it. In conclusion, language defines identity of a country and everyone should keep their language and explore others.
Language is nothing but a media which expresses feelings, ideas, experiences and even pains properly to others. Cultural background is the origin of language. Language is one of the channels which promote human relations and human affections. Language always unites the people and sometimes language itself diverse the people. Without the language we cannot imagine the existence of human beings on the earth. Language is a system of words that people used to express thoughts, feelings each other. The word ‘language’ derived from Latin “lingua” which means ‘tongue, speech’. The word sometimes used to refer to codes, ciphers and other kind of communication systems. For example computer programming.
Our languages: Today English is considered to be the sign of an educated man. There is a strong pressure of English on minor languages which is a threat to other local languages.
