John Wayne Gacy in his early years was shown to have a minor biological impairment. At the age of 11, Gacy was playing near a swing set and was hit in the head causing an accidental blood clot in the brain. The blood clot was not discovered until he was 16 years old and he suffered from blackouts from the clot from the ages of 11 until it was discovered. His health issues included a heart condition, an erupted appendix, and numerous blackouts and seizures. After Gacy was executed, there were many autopsies that were done on his brain to see if there were neurological impairments. John Wayne Gacy was born on March 17, 1942. He grew up in a working class neighborhood of Chicago. He was close to his mother, Mayrum, and sister, Karen. His father was a violent alcoholic, who beat Gacy frequently during his violent outbursts. Gacy loved his father despite his violent temper and homophobic nature. Throughout his childhood, Gacy strove to make his stern father proud of him, but seldom received his approval. On March 17, 1942, John Wayne Gacy was born in Chicago, Illinois. When he was younger, he was involved with activities such as boy scouts and odd jobs around his neighborhood. It is said that while Gacy wasn’t popular, he was well-liked by those people who knew him (Taylor, Troy). Gacy’s father was an alcoholic and would often abuse Gacy and his siblings if they were thought to have made trouble. His father would also abuse his mother. When Gacy was playing on a swing set at age 11, he was hit in the head with a swing. After this, Gacy would suffer from blackouts. John Wayne Gacy, Jr. was born in Chicago, Illinois March 17, 1942. As a child, Gacy was fat and did not play sports. He was described as being close to his mother, but not so with his father, an alcoholic who was abusive toward his wife and children. The Senior Gacy was described as “An Archie Bunker type, but with all humor removed.” At the age of 4, his father beat him with a belt for rearranging car parts he had removed, and another time beat him unconscious with a broomstick. He was also vebally abused by his father, often called “dumb and stupid,” “Sissy,” “Mama’s boy,” and told that he would “Probably grow up to be a queer” This verbal abuse was a constant for the younger Gacy, lasting all throughout his childhood and adolescence, however Gacy stated multiple times after his arrest that he did not hate his father. At the age of nine, Gacy was molested by a family friend, who would take him on long rides in a truck, and fondle him. Gacy never reported these incidents, as he was afraid his father would blame him. At school, he was often the target of bullying. He would assist the truant officer, no doubt earning more disdain from the other children, and was known to volunteer to run errands for teachers. He was told to avoid all sports due to a heart condition, and age eight he began to suffer blackouts. He was hospitalized for many of these blackouts, and again in 1957 for a burst appendix. His father did not believe him, and once accused him of faking even as he was hospitalized. A childhood friend, Richard Dalke described several instances where his father mocked and beat Gacy without any reason at all. Dalke said that Gacy would “put up his hands to defend himself” but that he never hit his father back....

That would make his age between 25 and 30 years old at the time of his first murder in Vallejo, California, in 1968. Also, that age estimate works with witness statements and it's supported by Zodiac's references to his victims in younger terms in his letters of 1969. Zodiac wasn't an attractive character from what we know. He may have had to wear glasses throughout his youth and his facial features weren't all that pleasing. So overall he may have been unpopular as a young boy and spent a good deal of time alone. It seems as though rejection is a big issue for Zodiac. No one knows anything about the Zodiac's parents but it wouldn't be ridiculous to say that there was domestic violence, broken relationships with parents or guardians, and maybe even a physical or sexual abuse in the household. Considering the adult outcome, Zodiac would have turned out to be an angry, withdrawn, loner, whose adolescence just could have been filled with fantasies and irrationality.
