Serial Killers
This semester we talked about a variety of serial killers. The first one we discussed was John Wayne Gacy. Gacy was an American serial killer who was responsible for the killing of at least 33 men and boys. He lived in Cook County, Illinois, at the time of his killings. He buried his victims’ bodies under his home.
Gacy struggled from an abusive childhood and with his sexuality. He was convicted of sexual assault in 1968 which is what led to his arrest and the finding of the bodies in his home. His father was a drunk who would beat him and his siblings with a razor strap. His father would also beat on their mother as well. Gacy’s sister says that eventually they learned to take the beatings and Gacy wouldn’t cry.

His mother reported that the boy was meeting with Gacy to discuss a job. Following this incident, a police search of his home uncovered his involvement in tons of illegal activity. Then they found a putrid smell which led to the uncovering of Gacy’s crawl space. It was discovered that John Wayne Gacy’s first victim was Timothy McCoy, after luring him to his home in 1972.
The trial of John Wayne Gacy started on February 6, 1980. Gacy admitted that he committed the crimes, but said it was his alternate ego “Pogo The Clown”. The people of the courthouse were trying to determine if he should be sentenced or declared insane. In the end, Gacy was found guilty and charged with 33 counts of murder and was declared as one of the most vicious killers in the United States. John Wayne Gacy was sentenced to 12 death sentences and 21 life sentences. He was put to death May 10, 1994, by lethal injection.
Another serial killer that we discussed was Theodore “Ted” Bundy. Bundy was also an American serial killer who confessed to the murder of 36 young women. When he was pulled over by police, many burglary tools were discovered. He was arrested immediately for having these tools. After being arrested, the police began to link him to other crimes, including the kidnapping of Carol DaRonch. Carol was a lucky victim who was able to escape Bundy. He escaped custody at least twice before he went on a murderous rampage. He murdered 2 women in Chi Omega at FSU and was caught due to bite marks he left on one of the victims. By the age of 14 he was stealing cars. In his teens he took part in stealing tires, running stills, bootlegging, and armed robbery. In 1922, he was committed to a boys home for auto theft. Two years later he was released on parole, but returned in 5 months for a similar charge. He meet Helen Wawzynak in 1928, and later married her. In January of 1931 he robbed a bank in Chicago, Illinois, and was sent to prison for one year to life.
John O'Rourke, inmate number four was sentenced to five years for grand larceny. He received his first rawhide beating two short weeks after his arrival.

In California, December 20, 1968, Zodiac attacked Betty Lou Jenson and David Faraday. This was his first significant criminal act. In a matter of 2 or 3 minutes, the attack was finished and he drove casually away from the scene. He showed no signs of remorse and seemed very calm about all of his actions.
