John Broadus Watson was born in Greenville, South Carolina on January 9, 1878 to Emma and Pickens Watson (Watson, 1999). He had a childhood that was torn between a very religious Christian mother and a drunk father, who often got into trouble with law enforcement. His mother pushed him to be a proper Christian, but growing up John was closer to his father (Weiland, n.d.). Unfortunately John’s father had cheated on his mother multiple times and eventually left the family in 1891, which had a huge negative impact on John. (Watson, 1999) His academic motivation declined, and he turned to violence finding himself in trouble with the law much like his father. However, his life turned around when he was accepted Furman University at the age of 16. His academic motivation improved along with his general attitude. While at …show more content…

Even so when his son, William, commited suicide in 1954 he was again hurt. He burned all of his unpublished works in 1958, not long before his death, in an attempt to work out his frustrations. It was a cold morning in Newark, NJ, on the 16th of February 1756 when my good friend Aaron Burr, Jr. was born. In this excerpt, Dr. Watson marvels over Holmes’ discovery of Stapleton’s disguised face in a Baskerville portrait. He was truly a Baskerville, which explained his motivation for everything that he did. Stapleton had lied about his ancestry, to turn questioning eyes away from him and unto other… more vulnerable… suspects such as Selden the convict. A few manuscripted or vocalized words and BAM! Someone can deceive a whole population, just as Stapleton did. Doyle also explores this concept when he writes “‘...in the character of his sister’” (225). Holmes talks in retrospection once more, this time about how Stapleton forced his wife to acquire the title of his sister, so that he could perhaps use her (just as he did) to gain trust with Sir Henry. Moreover, he once again lied and successfully deceived a population about (in this instance) his marital
Around the age of sixteen, John created a Utilitarian Society, which had the goal of bringing happiness to the greatest number of people, where he was one of a “small knot of young men” who practiced his father’s political and philosophical views. (http://www.utm.edu/research/iep/m/milljs.htm) At the age of twenty-one he suffered a mental breakdown, which resulted from severe strain from his earlier years. In his own autobiography, which was later published after his death, he wrote, that he was in a “dull state of nerves”; and that he had lost his charm. He said he had “no delight in virtue, or the general good, but also just as little in anything else.” After several months he realized that his emotions where not dried up and “the cloud gradually drew off.” In 1823 John took a clerkship position in the Examiner’s Office at the East India Company. Later he eventually headed that department. Harriet Taylor who was a close friend with John co-wrote several pieces of work with him. They met in 1830 and she was the mother of t...

The words Watson uses to describe Holmes such as “sharp and piercing” eyes, “hawk-like nose” and “mark the man of determination”. By having Watson describe such characteristics, it saves Holmes of looking like a show off with an ego. These haracteristics are true and surely the detective knows of his abilities but by having Watson aknowledge them brings more to the story because the comments were made based on observations and not by the individual trying to boost his ego.
John Broadus Watson (1878-1958) has become well known for being the founder of behaviorism as a school of thought throughout American psychology. His view on psychology consisted of seeing it as a science of observation on behaviors. He believed that one must first observe a behavior in a certain environment or situation, then predict and determine the connection between the two. Much of his theory was based on the work of Ivan Pavlov’s observations through classical conditioning. Watson claimed that the process of classical conditioning could be used to explain any behavioral factor in human psychology. Classical conditioning involves the pairing of two different stimuli in producing a learning response from the participant. His belief on the topic was that single differences in behavior were caused by different experiences of learning.
