Can an individual break hierarchical associations to find freedom and at which point would enlightenment be validated by achieving freedom through conflict? William Faulkner writes in “Barn Burning” about the desire for the individual to tear away from family because of disbelief in values and morals portrayed by a father. Abner becomes powerless with the release of slaves and chooses to transfer his negative desire for power onto his son. Although Sarty breaks the bond of blood between he and his father, he walks away with a greater sense of enlightenment. John Updike portrays the same hierarchical break in “A&P,” but within this story, the break is between an employer and employee. The break of power is driven by ulterior motives of women and fame. Sammy chooses to defy the authoritarian figure with hopes of proving himself, but to his surprise, his actions are invalidated after he walks outside and the girls are gone. Dale Bailey writes of a hierarchical break in “Hunger: A Confession” between two brothers and the gradual manipulation causing Simon to ultimately murder his brother Jeremy. Simon’s enlightenment is achieved through unconventional methods and only after the death of his brother, does Simon grasp the magnitude of murdering Jeremy. The obvious cause of Jeremy’s death was Simon taking the tools and murdering his brother. Had Jeremy and his family treated Simon differently, he would have never been forced to ruthlessly murder his brother.
Simon and Jeremy’s relationship took many shapes. For one moment, Jeremy would treat Simon as though any brother would by exchanging baseball cards rummaging through unknown mysteries down in the basement. Jeremy would tell frightening stories of ghosts, Indian burial grounds, and psychopathic murderers just as a normal brother would, but the desperate attempts of frightening Simon drove his brother mad. Simon was never good enough for his parents and was always half the boy Jeremy was. His mother spoke of him as “the changeling” speaking of him as if he generated from somebody else’s gene pool. Simon spoke of himself as “scrawny, an unlovely kid, and forever peering out at the world through a pair of thick glasses that Jeremy used to light ants on fire” and looked upon his brother as “blond, handsome, broad shouldered, friendly, and the kid everyone wanted to sit with in the lunch room.
In his short story "A & P" John Updike utilizes a 19-year-old adolescent to show us how a boy gets one step closer to adulthood. Sammy, an A & P checkout clerk, talks to the reader with blunt first person observations setting the tone of the story from the outset. The setting of the story shows us Sammy's position in life and where he really wants to be. Through the characterization of Sammy, Updike employs a simple heroic gesture to teach us that actions have consequences and we are responsible for our own actions.
Michael Patrick MacDonald lived a frightening life. To turn the book over and read the back cover, one might picture a decidedly idyllic existence. At times frightening, at times splendid, but always full of love. But to open this book is to open the door to Southie's ugly truth, to MacDonald's ugly truth, to take it in for all it's worth, to draw our own conclusions. One boy's hell is another boy's playground. Ma MacDonald is a palm tree in a hurricane, bending and swaying in the violent winds of Southie's interior, even as things are flying at her head, she crouches down to protect her children, to keep them out of harms way. John Updike's "A&P" is about a boy named Sammy, who lives a simple life while working in a supermarket he seems to despise. As he is following his daily routine, three girls in bathing suits enter the store. The girls affect everyone's monotonous lives, especially Sammy's. Because the girls disrupt the routines of the store, Sammy becomes aware of his life and decides to change himself.
Two people with two completely different characteristics have something alike. Both Dally and Johnny are mentally tough because of their parents. Johnny and Dally’s parents both do not care for them and could care less about them. For example, during Dally’s childhood he went to jail, been in a gang, and has been in many fights and his dad still would not care for him even if he won the lottery. Dally also talks about his dad's disgrace towards him in the car with Johnny and Ponyboy, “‘ Shoot, my dad don’t give a hang whether I’m in jail or dead in a car wreck or drunk in a gutter...’”(88). Dally could easily live without his dad and he does for the most part. Dally just hangs around with his friends and stays at their place. Similarly, Johnny's parents use him like a rag doll to blow off steam, “his father always beating him up”(14). The gang knows what happenes in Johnny’s house. In conclusion, Brother shows his self-interest in how he treats his younger brother. He treats his younger brother, Doodle, as something to ‘fix’ and he cannot accept his brother as he is. When Doodle finally learns to walk, Brother’s selfish need for a more ‘ideal’ little brother is not satisfied for long. Soon he demands a little brother who can run, jump, climb, swim, swing on vines, and row a boat. When he gives Doodle lessons for these activities, he does not do so for concern about Doodle wanting to be able to do them, but because he wants Doodle to be able to be a ‘normal’ brother.
Each person, whether they realize it or not, has been shaped by their relationships with others. The effects that piers or family members can have on someone are limitless and often times profound. In many instances, people do not even know that they are being influenced by others. Even if it is in the most subtle manner, all characters in novels are directly influenced by other figures. Interpretation of A & P This story takes place in 1961, in a small New England town's A&P grocery store. Sammy, the narrator, is introduced as a grocery checker and an observer of the store's patrons. He finds himself fascinated by a particular group of girls. Just in from the beach and still in their bathing suits, they are a stark contrast, to the otherwise plain store interior.
When two siblings are born together, and are close in age, many people wonder whether they will be the same or different altogether. A “River Runs through it” shows two brothers who grew up in the same household, and grew up loving to do the same activity fly fishing. Both brothers were raised in a very strict presbyterian household. Norman is the older brother, and he is much more responsible and family orientated. Paul is the irresponsible younger brother; Paul as an adult was not at home much anymore. Both brothers were loved equally as children, but how they view and use love is what separates them. Paul and Norman differ in behavior and character.
John Updike’s “A&P” is a short story about a nineteen year old boy during the 1960’s that has a summer job at the local A&P grocery. The main character in the story, Sammy, realizes that life isn’t always fair and that sometimes a person makes decisions that he will regret. Sammy sees that life doesn’t always go as planned when three young girls in bathing suits walk in and his manager Lengel gives them a hard time, and he comes to term with that sometimes you make bad decisions.

The short story “A & P” by John Updike is about a young man’s decision to stand up for others or, in the other characters’ opinions, make a foolish decision by abandoning his responsibility. At first he believes his decision is the right thing, quitting his job for how the girls were being treated. Then when he gets outside of the store, he realizes the world he just left behind, regrets his decision, and begins to question his actions. He starts to overthink what the world has to offer him, making his worldview change from underrating to overrating. His “unsure of the world’s dangers” worldview in the beginning changes to overrating the dangers of the future ahead at the end of the story causing Sammy to change throughout “A & P”.
Walton’s letters to his sister, Margaret, frames Victor’s main story. He opens the story discussing his quest to find an undiscovered country to compensate for his past failures and closes by grieving over the loss of a friend. Giving background on his expedition, Walton explains the cold, bare winter environment he is stuck in and the obstacles that he faced. Moments later, the author introduces Victor, who’s “eyes have generally an expression of wilderness, and even madness,” and was frantically looking for his runaway monster (21). He aboard the ship and share his story to Walton before he dies. Not only does Walton’s input serve as a frame structure, but he highlights similar characteristics between Victor and himself. Their lives parallel in which they were both isolated and eventually turn away from their goal because of their high ambition. Strong willed in their decision to continue despite their oppositions, they focus solely on pursuing the unknown and gradually exempt themselves from the world. John Updike's A&P provides numerous perspectives for critical interpretation. His descriptive metaphors and underlying sexual tones are just the tip of the iceberg. A gender analysis could be drawn from the initial outline of the story and Sammy's chauvinism towards the female. Further reading opens up a formalist and biographical perspective to the critic. After several readings I began seeing the Marxist perspective on the surreal environment of A&P. The economic and social differences are evident through Sammy's storytelling techniques and even further open up a biographical look at Updike's own view's and opinions. According to an essay posted on the internet Updike was a womanizer in his own era and displayed boyish immaturity into his adulthood. A second analysis of this story roots more from a reader-response/formalist view. Although Sammy centered his dramatization around three young females, more specifically the Queen of the trio, it was a poignant detailed head to toe description of scene. I'll touch on that later.
Rebecca West and Virginia Woolf give great significance to the families of their respective main characters in The Return of the Soldier and Jacob’s Room because it gives the reader a greater insight to the formation of and reasoning for both Chris and Jacob’s nature. Each of these characters have multiple families to deal with: Chris has Kitty and Jenny on the one hand, and Margaret on the other, while Jacob deals with his mother and brother as well as his connections to society and academia. The distinctions between each character’s multiple families cause them to behave differently in various situations, and provide reasons for their actions. It is said that we are shaped by our surroundings and molded by our families, and Woolf and West’s male protagonists prove to be no exception to this rule.
