I have rode the article Against School by John Taylor Gatto, even it was long pages to read, it was interesting and at the same time controversial and but I disagree with the author. Why? He is encouraging the young people of today that education is not worth it, is just a waste of time. Is reasonable what is he quoting with his facts “six classes a day, five days a week, nine months a year for twelve years is a boring routine that every person must take” It seems depressing to be in school for so long just to turn ourselves to slaves, receive orders like a peasant and work for somebody with high economic status is not what we want. for nothing. John Gatto make it clear to the reader that school is not important in order to be successful, Bill Gates didn’t need to go school to be a billionaire like he is today. In the United States, there are two different levels of education we can go for after graduated from high school. Normally we can choose for a Community College or a University. Community college refers to a technical institution. This faculty offers a two years college to students who decided to do not go directly to University. Here in Chicago, Illinois educational system provides seven Community Colleges: Richard J. Daley College, Kennedy Kind Colleges, Malcolm X College, Olive Harvey College, Harry S. Truman College, Harold Washington College, and Wilbur Wright College. This kind of educational system is often criticized by the news media and by politicians as simply job-training centers. The true is that they have not seen deeply in the benefits these Community Colleges are giving to lost students without expectations in life. In fact, these faculties were created to give an opportunity to students to figure out what they want to do in life. According to John Taylor Gatto many extraordinary people had become successful like I mentioned earlier without getting an education, but what he doesn’t know is that those extraordinary people were born already with a high amount of talent that God has gifted them.
Of course, in my opinion those people didn’t even need to read a book or been a boredom class with annoying teachers, those examples of people are Michael Jackson (Pop Star) Bill Gates (owner of Microsoft), Roman Abramovich (Chelsea Football Club owner). I can tell United States is one of the countries who provide more opportunities based on education. Most of the industrialized nations typically employ either a technical track or a university track. Students start funneled in specific track as early as middle school. In the order hand, in the United States students decide for themselves whether they want to go to College or go to a technical school. Also in most cases, students chose not to pursue any postsecondary education at all.
As a College student, I had heard many stories of peers about that reasons why they are in school. The most common is because their parents told them they have to go to College or because they were simply obligated to do so. Arts is a languages that all people speak that cut across racial, cultural, social, educational, and economic barriers and enhance cultural appreciation and awareness. Currently, Community College have requirement to take elective course as a requirement to graduate. An elective course is any course that counts toward your CAS (Communication Arts and Sciences) degree but does not satisfy a MAP, major, or minor requirement. .I though elective courses were just a waste of time, but after taking a semester at Wilbur Wright Community College I can say in my own personal experience that these courses made a significant chance on what I was expecting in my future career. When I first started going to College my main focus was on a MBA (Master Degree Administration). I decide for this particular major because. The classes I’m taking during this period time are English 101, Physical Geography 201, History of Latin America and Spanish Medical Interpreter. I took this specific class because in today’s days is important to have at least the minimum knowledge of languages in order to get into the business market where all is about data, statistics, and international communication through the web. Surprisingly, during the course I found really interesting thing about the Web.
We started with basic concepts about Internet connection; we also talk about how all this new technology expands through the world. And I say ‘surprisingly’ because I’m one of those people who don’t really care about technology or computer system. Actually I feel lost when people talk about software and programs. After a couple weeks we started working on the computer lab, where I learn how to create a Web site. I was amazing of how computer system works. Every day, the professor came with more information and more work to do. This is how I start thinking in a possible change for my career. life. John Taylor Gatto did really got my attention on putting courses aside. These courses help me to explore my academically desires. I know there are more students like me thinking they had found their pathways when in reality they haven’t explore enough. Community Colleges had made a big step in the guidance of many students during their educational process. But they still need to be more consistent and bring up more choices that will give us more option to go for. I encourage the government and personal from these schools to keep supporting the other side of education-arts, because this decision will possible bring positive results in the future.
Historical facts are not easily countered and appeal to the reader’s logic. This works in Gatto’s favor because he is trying to convince a very large audience of varying opinions and educations to see his point of view. He questions the credibility of the current school system by comparing it to the education of historical American figures such as George Washington and Thomas Edison. He then goes onto argue the real goal of the system using figures and historical precedent - mainly the Prussianization of the school system. Many Americans do not question the credibility of the education system within the country because they believe it forms good citizens and creates a stepping-stone to success. John Taylor Gatto is an American teacher who has experience in the classroom for thirty years and has now devoted his life to critiquing American schools exploiting his own experiences. In his essay “Against School”, he argues that the 12-year system of school may not be necessary, due to its curriculum, and that it may be a tactic of manipulation from the government to promote obedience. In the article “Are too many People Going to College” by Charles Murray a W. H. Brady Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, argues that our educational system needs improvement and that too many people are attending college. Some of Charles arguments on why too many people are attending college are obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree gives you a high paying job, college requires classes that are unnecessary, skill/talent may not need a degree and because they do not want to be labeled as dumb or lazy. Charles Murray makes a lot of good arguments on why too many people are going to college and I concur with his arguments.
Every single individual has once heard the words “get good grades, go to a good college and graduate, in order to get a good job and succeed in life.” However, no one can really assure that a student with a degree is going to have a better future than those who do not attend college. Lawrence B. Schlack, a retired superintendent, asserts in his article “Not Going to College is a Viable Option” that college is not the only place to go after graduating from high school. By using different kinds of persuasive techniques the author effectively supports his claim and makes the article an understandable and important tool for both parents and students who believe that college is their mandatory option after high school.

He claims that classrooms are often filled with boredom manufactured by repetitive class work and unenthusiastic teachings. Students are not actively engaged and challenged by their work and more often than not they have either already covered the concepts taught in class or they just do not understand what is being taught to them. The children contained in classrooms have come to believe that their teachers are not all that knowledgeable about the subjects that they are teaching and this advances their apathy towards education. The teachers also feel disadvantaged while fulfilling their roles as teachers because the students often bring rude and careless attitudes to class.
