Introduction Not all companies are viewed equally, as some companies happen to be harmful to their consumer’s health. The alcohol industry is one such company with their addictive products people get hooked and for some they find it difficult to put the bottle down and walk away. Yes, we all should be held accountable or in this case held responsible for our actions and/or decisions. Why should we blame the alcohol companies for our bad decisions? The alcohol companies do not exactly make it easy for us to just walk away with all commercials and advertising going on. This is just a ploy or an enticement for us to try their product. There is no doubt that the alcohol companies thrive on that and bank on making a profit. No one really considers the consumer’s health. Let’s focus on other things like it tastes good or how it makes you feel. This is where utilitarianism comes into play. John Stuart Mill’s basic theory of right and wrong morally – “that the concept of justice identifies certain rules or rights – the upholding of which is crucial for promoting well-being – and that injustice always involves violating the rights of some identifiable individual.” (Shaw, 2014). The producers of alcohol products have a moral obligation of doing what’s right. By disclosing on the product, itself, the dangers of consuming alcohol, displaying the percentage of alcohol on each bottle or can and sharing its adverse health effects that now can place the blame back on the consumer if one decides to consume their product. What is alcohol? Where does it even come from? Is it bad? What effect does it have on the body? What are the benefits? These popular questions are the focal points of this discussion. The moral and religious debate of whether or not alcohol is wrong to consume is not in the scope of this conversation. Alcohol is a widely used substance by many people, and I intend to take an objective, factual, and practical approach to this topic.
From top to bottom, John Stuart Mill put forth an incredible essay depicting the various unknown complexities of morality. He has a remarkable understanding and appreciation of utilitarianism and throughout the essay the audience can grasp a clearer understanding of morality. Morality, itself, may never be totally defined, but despite the struggle and lack of definition it still has meaning. Moral instinct comes differently to everyone making it incredibly difficult to discover a basis of morality. Society may never effectively establish the basis, but Mill’s essay provides people with a good idea.
Utilitarianism defined, is the contention that a man should judge everything based on the ability to promote the greatest individual happiness. In other words Utilitarianism states that good is what brings the most happiness to the most people. John Stuart Mill based his utilitarian principle on the decisions that we make. He says the decisions should always benefit the most people as much as possible no matter what the consequences might be. Mill says that we should weigh the outcomes and make our decisions based on the outcome that benefits the majority of the people. This leads to him stating that pleasure is the only desirable consequence of our decision or actions. Mill believes that human beings are endowed with the ability for conscious thought, and they are not satisfied with physical pleasures, but they strive to achieve pleasure of the mind as well.
Alcohol is the most commonly consumed harmful toxin. That’s a shocking number to be an alcohol level. In Britain many people are concerned about the alcohol consumption level, but on the other hand scientists say that the consumption of liquor is not the problem. They believe alcohol is the solution to a deeper problem people in the U.K. have. Scientists believe that more people are drinking because depression is becoming more common. While scientist think that people are drinking to help cope with their depression, the people of Britain feel that the high level of consumption is getting higher because people are just drinking because they can. Alcoholism is a big ordeal in Britain for the fact that it is costing them about 6 billion pounds a year. The average person from Britain has fifteen and one half liters of pure alcohol to drink daily. The people of Britain think the cost is not worth it. In this article “Fast Food and Personal Responsibility” (2003) which was written by Ninos P. Malek, Malek tries to argue and show people that it’s not entirely the fast food industries’ fault that people are obese or sick . He argues using 3 different supporting examples; first he says that, “High school students blaming their poor diets on school cafeteria” (Malek, 2003, p.309). Most student tend do that, but actually most cafeterias sell healthy and unhealthy food but people always need something to blame and never hold themselves the responsibility for their own action, secondly he says that no one is putting people under gun point to make them buy fast food (2003, p.309). That’s actually true but still he forgot to mention the fact that they are trying to brain wash people into buying their food through their erroneous advertisements. Third and last Malek tries to compare smoking to fast food, because back then tobacco companies were sued too for almost the same reason which is about health. Malek’s argument was precise because people need to learn to take responsibility for their own actions and should know that when they buy fast food they are weighing their own costs and benefits. But he didn’t show the immoral and unethical things the fast food industries were doing by using erroneous advertisements. The fast food industries shouldn’t be held accountable for this because everyone has a freedom of choice and they can choose whether to eat it or no.
Exposure to alcohol advertising is an everyday occurrence. Alcohol advertising is persuasive not only to adults but to those who are too young to buy alcohol legally. Although parents and peers have a large impact on youth decisions to drink, marketing also has a significant impact by influencing the attitudes of parents and peers and helping to create an environment that promotes underage drinking. Alcohol companies focus billions of dollars on advertising their products and still claim that the effect is minimal. I pose a few questions that are; who are the targets of alcohol advertising? How does alcohol advertising affect the people targeted by alcohol companies? Finally what actions are being taken to prevent the encouragement of underage drinking or other alcohol related tragedies?
The consumption of alcoholic beverages has caused too much turmoil in our society. A careful examination of this subject can help an honest person see the terrible consequences that alcohol can bring to those who become a slave to it. Even though some people do not wish to recognize that the consumption of alcoholic beverages is something unethical, we must acknowledge that it is.
