A tragic hero is the central character in a play, film, or book depicted as a noble figure who experiences a tragic downfall. Characters such as, Romeo (Romeo and Juliet), Jay Gatsby (The Great Gatsby), Severous Snape (Harry Potter), and Anakin Skywalker (Star Wars) all fit into the tragic hero role, as they all experience a tragic downfall in the end. Many people will argue that John Proctor from The Crucible is also among the tragic hero list because of how the play ends; however, others will argue that he is not a tragic hero because of his actions and role in the play. John tries to deny the whole truth about his relationship with Abigail for some time, but eventually he ends up confessing to it. Towards the last part of the play, John confesses to the affair in court and tells Judge Danforth that Elizabeth also knows about the affair, and they have her come in to verify the truth because John tells the court that his wife never lies and is an honest person. “...God help me, I lusted and there is a promise in such sweat. But it is a whore’s vengeance.” (Act 3, line)When Elizabeth is asked if her husband is lecher, she lies and denies it, not knowing that John already confessed to it just moments before. “My husband is a good and righteous man. I thought I saw my husband somewhat turning from me. And this girl.” (Act 3). At the end of the play, the court accuses John of witchcraft and is sentenced to death.
