In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible reputation was a critical factor for characters like John Proctor and Reverend Parris. As a hard working farmer, John Proctor cared very much about having a good name. Reverend Parris had a good reason to care about his reputation since he was a very respected religious leader. I don’t think reputation is everything but for these characters it was very important. John Proctor and Reverend Parris cared about their names throughout the play. John Proctor was trying to overcome the act of adultery he has with Abigail because no one knew about it except for his wife Elizabeth. This is because Proctor wants to keep his name clean from witchcraft and doesn’t want to be ruined. He also wants to keep his name clear for himself and his kids. Parris wanted to to keep his name clean because of his situation in the town. His life depended on it because of the income and place in the town of Salem. These two en had their reasons for keeping their names clean but the only similarity of them to is making sure their names are cleared of any involvement of witchcraft. In my opinion the truth is always more important than a good name but in certain situations the truth isn’t the best option. Just like in Salem a good name wasn’t the best thing to admit because in that time there wasn’t a fair chance of survival. Admitting the truth or pretending to lie were the only way of being cleared. Now n time a good name doesn’t mean as much as the truth because of today’s fairness. In conclusion, John Proctor and Reverend Parris both cared about their reputations in the play but both of them had different reasons for it. In the play, both Parris and Proctor thought a good name was more important than the truth. This is why these two characters had very important roles because of the way they
