“Imagine all the people living life in peace. You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us, and the world will be as one.”
–John Lennon.
John Lennon was a member of the legendary Beatles group. Not only was he one of the four talented men that created that group, but later he also made a solo career. Lennon didn’t have the simplest childhood and died at an early age from a gunshot. England was Lennon’s original home before the start of his international music career and then came to America.
Julia and Alfred Lennon gave birth to their first son John Winston Lennon on October 9, 1940 in Liverpool, England. His father was a merchant seaman and was away when John was born. Julia taught Lennon how to play the banjo, piano, and bought him his first guitar while his father was away during his childhood. John Lennon got his name from Prime Minister Winston Churchill and his paternal grandfather John “Jack” Lennon. While his father was away from home he sent regular payments to Lennon and Julia back in Liverpool. The payments stopped in February of 1944, after he went absent without leave, he returned six months later. Once back with his family he offered to continue to take care of them, but Julia was already pregnant again with another man’s child. At the age of five, Lennon was told to choose between his father and mother. He chose his father twice, but once he saw his mother walking away he cried and followed her. It would be 20 years before Lennon would speak to his father again. Throughout the rest of his adolescent years he lived with his aunt and uncle, Mimi and George Smith. Julia often visited Lennon and sometimes he would even go to where she lived in Liverpool, once he was old enough.
