Mr. Lukasko Honors Social Studies 2 27 August 2015 Hiroshima When the American bomber Enola Gay dropped the bomb on Hiroshima, it not only caused the end of the war, but also changed the 20th Century forever. Lives were effected all over the world. In John Hersey’s Hiroshima, he tells the story of six survivors and their struggling journey after the worlds first active atomic bomb was dropped on August 6th, 1946. On the morning of the bombing what had saved each character was a change or delay in their normal routine. The retaliation of war isn’t always aimed at the people fight the war but more so at the country’s citizens. The Reverend, Mr. Tanimoto, was educated in the U.S. His race and clothing choice has people questioning his loyalty to Japan. To show his faithfulness towards Japan he had recently joined to organize an air-raid defense for his neighborhood. Since the blast had ruined any and most supplies and injured most doctors, there was not much to work with. The priests would set out on trips to get food and find what supplies they could. They also help Mrs. Nakamura and her children get to the novitiate. Mr. Tanimoto found a boat he could row up and down the river to try and help as many people as he could. Doing this he had moved the severely injured people from the bank or the river across and up away from the rising water. Dr. Sasaki continued in working with patients at the hospital and was failing miserably. Being one of the only people on staff it was hard for him to try and help so many lives.
