The Federal Bureau of Investigation, also know as the FBI is an interesting topic. The FBI is the “principal investigative arm of the United States Department of Justice”, also known as DOJ. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is responsible in collecting facts and giving or writing reports that one has either perceived, investigated or observed. As well as, assembling evidence in cases that involve Federal jurisdiction and assembling evidence. Not to mention, it bestows law enforcement leadership and reinforcement to international and state law enforcement agencies, which enforce the law.

The investigation and cases is the heart of the Bureau, since all operations lie in the investigations. One of the famouses cases out of many the Bureau has conducted was categorized as, “Organized Crime and Gangsters.” The famous case is by one gangster named John Dillinger. On June 22, 1903 in the Oak Hill area of Indianapolis, John Herbert Dillinger was born. In a disciplinary and harsh atmosphere, John Herbert Dillinger was raised by his father who was permissive with other people. Moreover, John Herbert Dillinger soon dominated various amount of headlines, as a prominent thief. Dillinger and his gang frightened the Midwest, from September 1933 to July 1934. He killed and wounded around seventeen, robbed bank and the police and organized around three jail breaks. In his last jail break, Dillinger killed a sheriff. Dillinger stole the sheriff 's car and drove across Indiana-Illinois. Dillinger heading to chicago violated an Act, thus making is a federal offense. The act is known as, the National Motor Vehicle Theft Act, which is, ”a federal offense to to transport a stolen motor vehicle across state line.” Soon after, John Dillinger pronounced dead on July 22, 1934. His death occurred because of a set up between Ana Sage or Ana Cumpanas and the FBI. The FBI stood on duty, while waiting for Dillinger. The mission and values of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is up held with strong Constitutional values. Over the years since the FBI was created in 1908 by Attorney General Charles Bonaparte during the Presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. As a progressive during this time period Bonaparte applied his philosophy to forming the FBI with several corps of agents. His thought was that these men should have expertise and not political connections. With the U.S. Constitution based on “federalism” a national government with jurisdiction over matters that cross boundaries, such as interstate and foreign affairs.
People are often remembered for being overly successful, extremely talented, or insanely wealthy; but there are exceptions to every rule. Being a fearless outlaw is not the ideal way to gain fame, but John Dillinger managed to do so. Dillinger’s fearless charisma, led him to go above and beyond to provoke law enforcement. Not many criminals have succeeded in the way John Dillinger did during the 1920s and 30s. He managed to put society in awe due to his obstreperous acts of rebellion. Being one of the most infamous criminals from his time, Dillinger had a huge influence on crime, and has greatly impacted gangsters all over the country.
John Quincy Adams once said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” After getting a behind the scenes look at J. Edgar Hoover’s life and accomplishments I consider him to be a very influential leader. I was always familiar with the name J. Edgar Hoover, but I never fully understood his impact on the United States. Edgar, as his mother would call him, wasn’t a perfect man by any standards. He was born with a variety of traits that contribute to his leadership. Some of these traits attributed to his downfall. Throughout the movie there were many instances that tested his leadership in both negative and in positive ways.
Alphonse Gabriel Capone was the most notorious bootlegger in American History. He was born on January 17, 1899 and died of a heart attack on January 25, 1947. Capone grew up in Brooklyn and became a member of the Five Points Gang. During a street fight he had received a scar on his face that gave him the nickname “Scarface”. Capone quickly moves up the ranks in the mafia world, often noticed for his toughness, in 1919 he grabbed the attention of mobster John Torrio of Chicago. Capone was promoted to bodyguard of the mob boss James Colosimo. When Capone moved to Chicago, bootlegging was just starting to blow up. These bootleggers pounced on the opportunity to completely control the business of making, importing, and distributing alcohol and all alcohol products. The Federal Bureau of Investigation was founded in 1908 when the Attorney General appointed an anonymous force of 34 Special Agents to be investigators for the Department of Justice. Before that, the DOJ had to borrow Agents from the U.S. Secret Service. In 1909, the Special Agent Force was renamed the Bureau of Investigation, and after countless name changes, it became The Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1935.
At the beginning of his career in the FBI, Pistone was assigned to do street work. He worked on a lot of prostitution cases. He also worked on robbery cases. In 1974, Pistone was transferred to the Truck and Hijack Squad in New York City. His first long-term undercover assignment that led to his work with the Mafia was in Tampa, Florida. Pistone penetrated a ring of thieves that stole cars. Pistone was introduced to the gang as a car thief under the name Donnie Brasco. Under this name, he infiltrated the Mafia later on. In February 1976, due to Pistone's good work, the entire ring was put in jail, and millions in stolen property were recovered. Pistone (1989) says, "For my work I got a letter of commendation from Clarence M. Kelley, Director of the FBI, and an award of $250"(p. 36).

Alphonse did well at school until the 6th grade when he was expelled for retaliating against a teacher who hit him. He was fourteen at the time. He became part of the Five Points gang in Manhattan and worked in gangster Frankie Yale's bar, the Harvard Inn, as a bouncer and bartender. While working at the Inn one night, local gangster Frank Gallucio was drinking with his sister at the Harvard Inn. Capone approached the girl to compliment her, and Gallucio took offense to him started a fight. Gallucio pulled a knife and cut Capone's face three times. That is how "Scarface" came to be.

Law enforcement is a career that is both violent and rewarding in many capacities. Justice needs to be served in law enforcement and they have a responsibility to uphold the law and serve the people in the community. Law enforcement is crucial in the world today as a global realm as life continues to be more complex and law enforcement struggles to combat many aspects of crime. In order to combat these problems and have a positive future in the criminal justice system, everyone must work together on a bigger scale.
Did you know that the first private investigation agency was started by a criminal? While conducting research over this particular topic I learned a lot of interesting information regarding the type of work done by private investigators, as well as the potential employment opportunities. This world is a crazy and deceptive place and it is up to us to get to the truth of everything. Clint Eastwood’s 2011 film, J. Edgar staring Leonardo DiCaprio as J. Edgar Hoover, depicts the personal accounts and reflections of Hoover’s life and professional journey (J. Edgar Hoover). Responsible for the advancements of modern day crime investigation, and the initial establishment of the Federal Beau Of Investigation, J. Edgar Hoover successfully directed the FBI for 50 years. Narrated in retrospect, the film portrays significant events throughout his career. In the film J. Edgar Hoover was accurately portrayed as rabidly anti-communist and his manipulation tactics were true to life as well. However, Hoovers flashback in the movie of arresting high profile criminals and solving key cases is dramatized emphasizing he did it all. In the end of the film Hoover’s partner Tolson accurately reveals Hoovers historic false claim to fame of arresting high profile criminals.
