It was heard on the radios throughout the country. In the new day of the television, countless citizens at home were tuning in to the news station. They were all hearing the same news. Their current president had just been shot. This is the same president that got up 2 years before and told the citizens, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country!” (Kennedy). The entire nation was in shock, waiting for the final word on their beloved president. John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born on May 29, 1917 in Brookline, Massachusetts. He was born to Rose Elizabeth Fitzgerald and Joseph Kennedy Sr. The family was destined for success from the beginning. Although his first career was as a banker, John’s father, Joseph, went on to begin a new career in the government. John F. Kennedy was the second oldest of nine siblings (“John Fitzgerald”). Their parents taught them to be competitive in everything and lose at nothing. This shows in Kennedy’s later life. Kennedy graduated from his high school, Choate, in 1936 and went on to Harvard to pursue a career in law. While at Harvard, John also played football. During one game, he ruptured a disc in his spine. His back would never fully heal from this injury, and he would eventually have to wear a back brace, which may have turned out to be fatal for him. Although numerous people see JFK as an ambitious young man, he was quite the opposite. It was essentially his brother, Joe, who first wanted to go into politics and become president. John was just an average student who wanted to slide by in law school. However, their father needed to move to Europe to become the United States Ambassador to England. (CITE*) This is when John F. Kennedy became even more interested in politics and world affairs. After a visit with his father in Europe, John came back more eager to learn about law and history more than ever before.
