The Pigman The book The Pigman is about a close friendship between the main characters John, Lorraine, and Mr. Pignati. The amazing friendship between the three main characters all started when John and Lorraine prank called Mr. Pignati and asked for ten dollars to help them out with their fake charity they made up "The Lorraine and John Fund!"(23). Mr. Pignati invited John and Lorraine to his house to get the donation for the charity but Mr. Pignati's welcomed them into house way nicer than they expected. "Please sit down," he said smiling away like crazy." I've got some homemade wine if you like"(36). Mr. Pignati friendly personality got the two teenagers wanting to know more about him. teenagers left the house, Mr. Pignati asked them to go the zoo with him which was a little uncomfortable for John and Lorraine at first but soon they will enjoy spending time with him. John and Lorraine decided to go to the zoo with Mr.Pignati even though he seems to be still a stranger to them but when they hung out at zoo, they loved how Mr. Pignati enjoys visiting the animals and feeding them. Mr. Pignati treated Lorraine and John so nicely during their little trip at the zoo because he brought them candies, drinks, ice cream, and peanuts to feed his animal friend Bobo."As a matter of fact, the way the Pigman was treating Lorraine and me you'd have thought he liked us as much as Bobo"(60). Soon, they started to visit Mr. Pignati more often after schools and he was very happy to see them. Mr. Pignati gave Lorraine and John a tour of his house and what he owns even though he doesn't really them very well. As they look around the house, Mr. Pignati told them about his wife Conchetta and how much he love her but suddenly, John found a Conchetta Pignati's funeral bill. John told Lorraine about it and they didn't know if they should ask the friendly old man about it because they knew that would just ruined his happiness and didn't know how he would handle it. So the two teenagers decided not to bring it up for the sake of their friend Mr. Pignati's happiness. Their remarkable friendship continued when they went shopping together at the Beekman's Department Store.
The Beekman store was Mr. Pignati favorite place to go shopping with Conchetta back in the days and he wants his two teenagers friend to see what it's like. "Mr.Pignati started getting excited when we got inside with all those Saturday shoppers"(81)."You could tell right off he was going to show us around as though he owned the place"(81). They first went to a fancy food store and Mr. Pignati started buying anything type of food John and Lorraine wanted. The way Mr. Pignati treated and wanting to buy all the food, clothes, and shoes at the Beekman for Lorraine and John was like as if they were his son and daughter. Mr. Pignati also bought them roller skates and John and Lorraine riding their skates along with him made the old man's day very fun and got him to act like a kid. "Wait for me," Mr. Pignati yelled, carrying his skate under his arm and laughing along with us"(88). The two teenagers feelings for the old man became very close and their friendship was really amazing because they were like a
family. One day John and Mr. Pignati were playing around and chasing each other inside the house, the old man got a heart and he was taken to a hospital. In order to see Mr. Pignati, John and Lorraine told the nurse that they were his son and daughter which was really sweet. They brought flowers for their sweet old friend and Mr. Pignati gave them the keys to his house because he now really trusted them. John and Lorraine did a little nice favor for Mr. Pignati by visiting Bobo which was really nice because he really missed his animal friend. "Please take care of Bobo until I get out, he smiled"(117). Since John and Lorraine have the keys to Mr. Pignati house, they made a terrible decision that would really hurt the Pigman's feelings which was having a party at his house."We're going to have a few friends over for drinks tonight"(130). More than forty people came to the party and wrecked many of the things Mr. Pignati owned. The Pigman came home from the hospital and saw his house was trashed. He couldn't believe that his two teenagers friends would do such things like this but still forgave them because of how much they meant to him and was like a family.
When she says There was something about his voice that made me feel sorry for him, I began to wish I never bothered him that is the very beginning of a friendship or a strong bond between Lorraine, John, and Mr.Pignati. A Lesson Learned for the Cashier in John Updikes “A&P” “A&P” tells a story about a young cashier who starts out being prejudice and bias, but then realizes he is just like the others he had been judging all day, and decides to prove he is different and gets caught up underneath everyone. In John Updikes “A&P”, the young cashier who is the main character, becomes the victim of his own opinionated statements. Sammy, a young cashier at a local market shows his very biased opinions when he describes the three girls walking around the store, when he talks about his fellow co-worker, Stokesies life, and when his manager, Lengal, comes into the scene to kick the girls out of the store. First, Sammy starts showing how opinionated he is when the three girls walk into the market to pick up a few things. Sammy begins the story describing every detail of these girls, from their size and weight, to the balance of their tans, to how their clothes were worn.

Sammy is the cashier at the store, he has been for quite some time now, long enough where he has a memorized “the punches, 4, 9, GROC, TOT” ( 602 ) and has created a song for himself “"Hello (bing) there, you (gung) hap-py pee-pul (splat)"” ( 602 ). Showing his contempt for conformity and consumerism to the everyday life of the store Sammy joins the shoppers or as he calls them the “sheep” ( 600 ) of the store who can never be out of the spell of their daily routines. The location and the layout of the store is also tediously described by Sammy when he is describing the surroundings to the readers where he is located “between the checkouts and the Special bins” ( 599 ). He also does this when he describes the girls going up and down the isles of items “the cat-and-dog-food-breakfast-cereal-macaroni-rice-raisins-seasonings-spreads-spaghetti-soft-drinks-crackers-and-cookies aisle” ( 600 ). With all of these tedious descriptions of details of Sammy’s surrounding we slowly start to see him getting more and more frustrated and appalled at the conformity of the society that he lives in, and the difficulty of breaking the social formalities that he must deal with on a daily basis.

In the short story A&P by John Updike, the story is told in a first person narrative of a teenage boy working as a cashier in an A&P grocery store on a hot summer day. The story begins with the teenage boy named Sammy becoming preoccupied by a group of three teenage girls that walk into the grocery store wearing bathing suits. Sammy admires the girl's beauty as most nineteen year old adolescent boys would, in a slightly lewd and immature nature. His grammar is flawed and he is clearly not of an upper-class family, his job appears to be a necessity for a son of a family that is not well off. The name he gives the girl who seems to be the object of his desire, Queenie, portrays a social difference from himself. Sammy further imagines the differences in class and living style when he describes Queenie's voice as "kind of tony, the way it ticked over 'picked up' and 'snacks'." He imagines her with aristocratic home life in describing “her father and the other men were standing around in ice-cream coats and bow ties and the women were in sandals picking up herring snacks on toothpicks off a big glass plate and they were holding drinks the color of water with olives and sprigs of mint in them."Sammy compares his own parents occasions, where they serve their guests "lemonade and if it's a real racy affair Schlitz in tall glasses with 'They'll Do It Every Time' cartoons stenciled on."
A friendship can be considered to be one of the most complex and ever changing concepts that the human race tries to comprehend. In ';Lord of the Flies';: by William Golding, Piggy and Ralph, both as different in looks as they are in personality, are forced together by fate and to allie with one another for survival .Through the harsh experiences, that they battle through, an indestructible bond is formed. The friendship continuously develops from the reliance of Piggy upon Ralph at the beginning of the story, then to the alliance of both Piggy and Ralph as more tragedy struck, to their unbreakable bond which is formed, after the whole group falls apart.
Well Sammy, the main character, is nineteen and has or had, as I should say after reading the story, a job working as a check-out clerk at the local A&P. (Alexadrov and Petrooshki Tea Company) When one day all hell breaks loose as three scantily clad young women strut into the store to buy Fancy Herring in Pure Sour Cream- 49cents, which is another big indication of the time, the prices of goods and also what people were buying. During this time "Stokesie" is introduced to us as the other cashier that is three years older than Sammy. (22) Well Sammy and Stokesie are overwhelmed with emotions as soon as they lay eyes on these ladies. Which I understand what is going being a guy/man and living in sort of a small town myself, where you know all the girls and their either taken or you just are not interested.
Two men were working the front end, the cashier at register 3 was helping an older looking woman with a sun hat, Capri pants ,and far too much make up on, the other cashier was leaning on the bag rack behind him, enjoying a break in a slow day . Sammy’s experiences with the everday shoppers, describing them as “sheep pushing their carts down the aisle” along with the store “having bags of peat moss and aluminum lawn furniture stacked on the pavement”, exemplifies societies orderly fasion where everything remains the same. However, his mundane lifestyle immediately shifts when the three women enter the A&P, showing “the contrast between the usual customers at the A&P and these girls” (McFarland). Sammy represents a typical teenager stuck in a monotonous daily existence who allows himself to embrace rather than reject the teenagers who prove “different” or “progressive”.
