Call it divine intervention. It was unbelievable! Like an alchemist converting the basset of metals of pure gold, quarterback Y.A. Tittle, and fullback Joe Perry took full advantage of a miscue—a fumble—as it aided in San Francisco’s comeback win a crucial Western Division game. GAME SETTING: Detroit’s Briggs Stadium...October 1955 in front of 51,438 rained-soaked fans from a hailing storm, as the conditions on the field were far less than favorable—for any team—let alone for a miraculous comeback victory for the visitors from California. The two-minute warning had just been issued, as the clock’s hands slowly circled the dial, and when it displayed 0:00 ending the game, and the Lions would be victorious. The 49ers had trailed by 18, (24-6) …show more content…
Disneyland Fairytale? Divine intervention? Luck? Talent? Let’s take a look at what took place throughout the game that would set the stage and play into the win. Detroit capitalized on halfback, Dickey Moegle’s, first quarter fumble on the opening kick-off and took a quick 7-0 lead. John Henry Johnson added three more fumbles in the slush during the first quarter. Now Joe Perry, became the go-to-guy. Despite falling behind so quickly, San Francisco refused to quit. The Lions built up an insurmountable 24-6 fourth quarter advantage. With only a minute being played in the final quarter, rookie halfback Moegle swept into the end zone on a 10-yard run, cutting the lead margin to 24-13. Moegle’s scamper and the subsequent defensive stand seemed to have ignited the team...and the rally had begun! The following series, 49ers defensive back, Rex Berry, picked-off a Lions’ Harry Gilmer pass, returning the errant throw 44 yards. Following the conversion, the 49ers were down by four, 24-20. The winning drive...behind the weatherproof arm of Tittle, the 49ers drove 57-yards behind the clutching hands of halfback, Hugh McElhenny and end, Billy Wilson, and the churning legs of Perry and Moegle, put the team in position to win the game with 1:50 left on the scoreboard …show more content…
Tittle, talks...how the winning play came about. “On fourth down, I called a play,” said Tittle, “that sent Joe Arenas, faking into the line, as I would leap a jump pass to Soltau, cutting into the left corner of the end zone. Perry was the trailer just in case trouble developed. But, I fumbled the hand off. Perry saw me drop the ball, as he didn't follow Soltau. Perry ran to my left hollering for me to pitch him the ball. I grabbed it and did what he said. He picked it up and ran around the corner past diving defenders to get our winning score. That was all there was to
Next, more uproar erupted in the 1998 playoffs when an official missed wide receiver Jerry Rice's fumble, which would have ended what turned into the 49ers' game-winning drive against the Packers. Rick Reilly declares:
... middle of paper ... ... The Bears lost 24-0. Gamblers lost a large sum of money that day and caused a big uproar.
The winning that the Steelers have done in the past forty-three seasons has been remarkable. Information gathered from "Pittsburgh Steelers Team Encyclopedia” has shown that the Steelers have had a winning season
On September 24, 1960 was the first game played for the newly expansioned Cowboys. The game was played at the Cotton Bowl which was the home stadium for the Cowboys, which is also the University of Texas home stadium. That was the highlight of the year as they went through the season winless until the second to last game of the season. They were playing the New York Giants in New York and squeaked out a tie, ending the 1960 season with a record of 0-11-1 (Fleming 1).
...a hook shot, cut the deficit to four points with three minutes remaining and Pryor's free throw chopped it to 48-45.
In Morabito’s first year he signed many famous and talented people such as Frankie Albert, Joe Vetrano, and Alyn Beals. With Lawerecneh T. (Buck) Shaw as the head coach, the 49ers slowly but surely won continuously, as they tried to get a spot in the National Football League. In their first four years in the ACC, the 49ers finished second behind the talent- packed Cleveland Browns. Finally, in 1950, fans celebrated for the entry of the 49ers into the NFL. They joined great teams such as the Cleveland Browns and the Baltimore Colts (“Niner’s history” www.49ersparadise.com).
My family and I are big Giants fans, and one time, we were at a Giants game. At this Giants game, they were losing to the Redskins almost the entire game. At the end, the Giants were losing by six points, with about 5 seconds left to
“Shazier injury, dirty hits cast dark shadow over steelers MNF win vs Bengals” is a informative essay which attempts to explain the events impacted the Bengals vs Steelers monday night football game. The author backs up
on day in early june gablin was sitting in the dugout of the san jose sunbirds stadium remembering last season. It was the eighteenth inning of the second game of the Western Division play-offs against the Santa Ana Lionettes and Gamblins idol. One of the main reasons why the 49ers could be considered the best team in the National Football League is because they are tied for second place with the most superbowl victories. SanFrancisco won the superbowl in 1981, 1984, 1988, 1989, and 1994. A superbowl is won each year by the best team in football and every year a team strives to get to the playoffs. The 49ers are one of the only eight teams in the NFL to win back to back superbowls in 1988, and 1989. In 1989 SanFrancisco defeated the Denver Broncos in superbowl XXIV 55-10 which to this day is still the largest superbowl victory margin ever .
So the question about the elusive road shutout remained and since Google didn't help, I grabbed a pen and paper and went over to Pro Football Reference for a little research. What I learned was pretty interesting.
San Francisco culture was also mended by the cities’ love for their sports teams, especially the San Francisco 49’ers. According to Talbot, the 49’s was one of the worst teams in history during the late 1970’s. It was a depressing and dark time in San Francisco, and the teams loses only seemed to make the city seem more angry and restless, but regardless, never unfaithful. It wasn't until they plummeted their losses and fired Thomas, that they decided to start seeking out their new angel, Bill Walsh. Walsh did not succeed at first nor for the first couple seasons, but was able to recruit Joe Montana and Dwight Clark who created history for the 49ers. Walsh was a very good coach, strategic, education oriented, and was greatly respected by the team. Not
The impact this game had on the NFL is pretty crazy and it changed the look at the playoffs. Going through the season for both teams it was pretty remarkable they even had a chance to make it to the playoffs. Matt Flynn will go down as bringing the best comeback ever and he doesn't even play anymore. There has been other great comebacks in packer history; however, none of them had an impact to the season like the Packers vs Cowboys. Lions vs Packers comeback was an amazing game, especially with the hail mary to finish. That game did not really determine are playoff hopes as much as the cowboys game
Levi’s stadium is the home of the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara California. The construction for the Levi’s stadium was initiated in April 2012 and was completed by July 2014. The San Francisco 49ers previously played at the Candlestick Park, which was located approximately 30 minutes north of the Levi’s stadium. Ever since the year 1971 the San Francisco 49ers have played at the Candlestick Park. This park was closed in August of 2014 after the completion of the new stadium making the Levi’s Stadium only a few months old.
Despite playing in a small market and among the notoriously fickle southern California fan base, the San Diego Chargers have emerged as a fairly successful franchise in the NFL. While the Chargers have certain limitations due to their venue, they ameliorate this in a number of ways, including the cuisine they offer, their tailgating experience, their involvement in the community and the type of players they have on their roster in order to generate and accumulate extensive and sustained relationship capital. Though the Chargers play host to one of the worst stadiums in the NFL, they deliver a solid game day experience for fans. Qualcomm Stadium was constructed in 19671, making it one of the oldest arenas in the league.
