Everyone is different. In high school, people make sure you know that. I used to think that stereotypes were silly, that they weren't applicable to reality. However, over time I have realized that an endless amount of stereotypical kids are inside the walls of our everyday high schools.
First are the highest in power, of course, the “jocks”. Movies often portray them as big muscular and dumb. Normally this accusation is false. The jocks I have come to know are always different, but they all take pride in one thing, competing. Males focus hard on their game and are known for being funny. wearing casual clothing with a slight dressy flare; Polo, Luis Vuitton etc. or a classic Sports Tee and a pair of denim jeans. Of course then there are the athletes, which many people mistake as the same stereotype as jocks.
Athletes are popular in a different way known to be playful, energetic and friendly. They are popular with every crowd in unique ways. Their attire consists mostly of Nike, Adidas, or any type of fitness fashion, new or worn.
Following at the second highest in power, are the brains. Usually the athletes fit into this category as well, showing passion for their game but also focus on their education. This group consists of people who make excellent grades and are involved in excessive activities, such as Student Counsel, Key Club, NHS, FFA, and UIL all at the same time! These people are
regularly overwhelmed and extremely busy but determined and successful. The style here is not specific in genre; everyone seems to have their own distinct taste.
The next group is the scene kids. Scene is a term for pop gothic. These people try to be excessively different in order to draw attention to their “uniqueness”. They’re typically seen wearing neon colors with black and are leopard or zebra print obsessed. Their hair is dyed at least two different colors and cut at different angles, most always parted to the side causing bangs to mysteriously cover half their face. genders. Last, but certainly not least are the diverse. These people are almost always friendly, caring and content. Diverse kids have strong healthy relationships with people that they build off trust and loyalty. Their attire varies from casual to classy, whether it is a long patterned skirt or black yoga pants with pink stripes down the side. They are often known to be theater kids or band kids who also tie in to the brains category. The world is full of people that are different, yet similar. Observing peers and participating in social interactions has made me aware of the numerous genres in our culture. I for one think stereotypes are a good thing, for they are the world’s classification of whom a person is most comfortable being, themselves.
The film “A League of Their Own,” depicts a fictionalized tale of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League. This league was started during World War II when many of the Major Leagues Biggest stars were drafted to the war. MLB owners decided to start this league with hopes of making money while the men were overseas fighting. Traditional stereotypes of women in sports were already in force before the league even begins. One of the scouts letts Dottie, one of the films main characters she is the perfect combination of looks as well as talent. The scout even rejects one potential player because she is not as pretty as the league is looking for even though she is a great baseball player. The player, Marla’s father said if she was a boy she would be playing for the Yankee’s. Eventually Mara’s father is able to convince the scout to take Marla to try outs because he raised her on his own after her mother died. Her father says it is his fault his daughter is a tomboy. In this case the film reinforces the traditional stereotype that mothers are in charge of raising their daughters and teaching them to be a lady, where fathers are incapable of raising girls to be anything other than a tomboy. Such thinking ignores many even-tempered redheads and generous Scottish people. Stereotyping emphasizes many differences between groups while ignoring their similarities to other people. A time that I did something that I thought I couldn't do, was to stick up for others. When I was in sixth grade, during recess, I saw a girl named Melissa crying. I went up to her and asked what was wrong. She said that people were talking about her behind her back, and that she felt awkward around them. I consoled her by letting her know that friends don't talk behind friends backs and that you have other people that you can talk to during recess. It bothered me how Melissa was sad. She felt a little better after we talked and then we played games.
A group of people who leads others to cheer especially at a pep rally or athletic event. That's the definition of cheerleaders. But stereotypes seems to block the positive energy coming from the cheerleaders and make them look negative. Cheerleaders main goal is to pump up the crowd and cheer on their team. However, when the students and parents neglect that it doesn't just mock the cheerleaders, it also takes away the spirit of the football/athletic team. There are so many stereotypes, but some of them include: cheerleaders aren't intelligent, cheerleaders aren't athletes, cheerleading isn't dangerous, boys can’t be cheerleaders and cheerleaders are snobs. I believe that stereotypes should not run cheerleaders lives or anyones for that matter especially if they're not true.
In today’s society we as a culture have set the standard of how a person is stereotyped. The cruel truth is that being judgmental of others simply because of that person’s clothes, gender, or language, is damaging to that person’s identity and also damaging to the trust that could have been built between individuals.The decision to choose which social group a person decides to be a part of should not define who the person is as an individual. People just like to do different activities that make them happy. A male cheerleader has the abilities that some girls may not, such as demonstrating strong muscle power in necessary situations. Cheerleading may make some males happy and they can do tricks or other things many females won't dare to do.
Sports are a popular pastime among all ages and types of people. People not only participate in them for fun, but also for money, physical fitness, rush of competition, and for many other personal reasons. High-level athletes include all people who play on a team past the standard levels through their childhood and high school years. A team that would be considered high level is university varsity sports, a junior sport, and professional leagues. An athlete that is involved in any of these leagues needs to be sociable, a leader, able to keep calm in high-stress situations, and able to trust his/her teammates and coaching staff. These are the type of people who usually possess personal skills. They like to take up responsibilities and manage a team. They make good leaders. They have good organizing and coordinating skills. They have the emotional capability to deal with high level of responsibility. They enjoy authority and responsibility.
