With the help of his seventh cousin, he must avert the imminent war while keeping his overprotective mother in the dark so she won't find the blunder of the events later on, Knox news reports of a man that they believe is a terrorist. When Jimmy gets his green card in the mail he is overly excited and he starts with a celebration in the streets of Iran. One of the people who are celebrating gives him a flag to wave to honor America. The bystanders end up tickling him and he ends up dropping the flag on the floor in a puddle of gasoline. He doesn't recognize that there is a man fixing his car not too far away from where he is celebrating and his gasoline container was leaking. The man fixing his car ends up flicking the cigarette and it land on the flag burning it. Jimmy cowered by what happens, tries to blow out the fire by stomping on it. While he is doing that Iranians start filming him and send it to social media where Knox News went berserk and while he is showing the clip, Knox explains that he is not welcomed and because as Knox News says it “ because all these people look alike” they believe he is a terrorist.
Thunderheart is a movie inspired by the sad realities of various Native American reservations in the 1970’s. This is the story of a Sioux tribe, conquered in their own land, on a reservation in South Dakota. Thunderheart is partly an investigation of the murder of Leo Fast Elk and also, the heroic journey of Ray Levoi. Ray is an F.B.I. agent with a Sioux background, sent by his superior Frank Coutelle to this reservation to diffuse tension and chaos amongst the locals and solve the murder mystery. At the reservation, Ray embarks on his heroic journey to redeem this ‘wasteland’ and at the same time, discovers his own identity and his place in the greater society. Certain scenes of the movie mark the significant stages of Ray’s heroic journey. His journey to the wasteland, the shooting of Maggie Eagle Bear’s son, Ray’s spiritual vision, and his recognition as the reincarnation of “Thunderheart,” signify his progression as a hero and allow him to acculturate his native spirituality and cultural identity as a Sioux.

Taking place in East Germany, 1989, the movie is about a family consisting of a mother, son, and daughter. The mother, Christiane, is a strong socialist and a party member of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Christiane was dramatically shaken, but it only increased her passion for the GDR. One day, she witnesses her son, Alex, protesting in an anti-Berlin Wall demonstration and being apprehended by the police. Christiane suffers a heart attack from the sight and goes into a coma for 8 months. During that time period, much has changed, including the fall of the Berlin wall, the GDR being dissolved, and the reunification of West and East Germany. With the fall of the Berlin wall, socialism in on the decline and capitalism begins to thrive with the sharp increase of consumer goods. Knowing that his mom worked her whole life as a socialist, Alex wanted to hide the outside world from her and pretend as if nothing has happened and that the GDR was still in power over East Germany. Trying to explain historical events is challenging because there are many sources and versions that can create confusion and misunderstanding of the real facts. In the case of Stonewall, it mostly got recorded to the history by newspapers, photography and the word of people who witnessed that night. However, the problem with these kind of sources, both from that period of time and the current ones, is that most of them are bias or are written with the purpose of influence the audience. The movie I decided to analyze for this course was American History X (1998), which stars Edward Norton. Though this movie isn’t widely known, it is one of the more interesting movies I have seen. It’s probably one of the best films that depict the Neo Nazi plague on American culture. The film takes place from the mid to late 1990’s during the Internet boom, and touches on subjects from affirmative action to Rodney King. One of the highlights of this movie that really relates to one of the key aspects of this course is the deterrence of capital punishment. Edward Norton’s portrayal as the grief stricken older brother who turns to racist ideologies and violence to cope with his fathers death, completely disregards the consequences of his actions as he brutally murders someone in front of his family for trying to steal his car. The unstable mentality that he developed after his father’s death really goes hand-to-hand specifically with Isaac Ehrlich’s study of capital punishment and deterrence. Although this movie is entirely fictional, a lot of the central themes (racism, crime punishment, gang pervasiveness, and one’s own vulnerability) are accurate representations of the very problems that essentially afflict us as a society.

Well-known Director Roland Emmerich’s ‘Patriots’ is a historically based film focusing on the Revolutionary War and how much energy, courage, fighting and souls this major battle took away in order to achieve victory. Patriots was released even before half of the students in my history class learned how to walk which was June 27, 2000. Robert Dowan who also made the film possible was the talented screenwriter behind this film. The major cast in the Patriots were Mel Gibson who played as Benjamin Martin, Heath Ledger as the courageous Gabriel, Jason Isaacs as Lt. Colonel William Tavington, Tom Wilkinson as the cowardice and intelligent Gen. Lord Charles Cornwallis, and last but not least major actor, Tchéky Karyo as Jean Villeneuve. Patriots certainly gave me more knowledge of what was going on during the Revolutionary War.

It seems to tell a narration of two people simultaneously. Of course we all know about spider man and how he has special skills to help out the society around him. With this in mind it sets him out as a true hero. Nachbar and Lause write in a way that help people understand that, we too have goals and you can grow up to be anything you want to become. As american Hero is brought up in this article, they want you to know that a hero embodies three values, and those three values are, achievement and humble origins, power and humility, and special skills/ordinary problems.
Violent video games and movies can dehumanize people through accostoming them to seeing death, stripping humanity from their opponents, and allowing them to hide behind a screen from their actions. In The Sniper the main character is described as having “the eyes of a man who is used to looking at death” (O’Flaherty). Because the sniper was so accustomed to death, and even being the cause of it, he has little to no reaction to killing people day by day. He does not think of them as individual humans with lives and souls, but just another dehumanized being. Therefore, he does not come to the repercussions of his actions until he discovers that one of his victims was actually his brother.
On June 6, 1943, in Greenbow, Alabama, an unexpected hero was born with a crooked spine and strong legs. Forrest Gump is not an expected conventional hero, however his accolades and accomplishments suggest otherwise. A hero is someone who inspires and instills good morals upon others by their courageous and outstanding acts. Forrest demonstrates these characteristics multiple times during his heroic journey. Whether it be diplomatic pingpong, fighting in the Vietnam War, becoming a local football legend at the University of Alabama or donating money to a deceased friend’s family, Forrest influenced many people with his unselfish and charitable acts. Joseph Campbell’s monomyth consists of the following stages: taking place in an ordinary world, a call to adventure, refusal of said call, meeting with a mentor, crossing the threshold, trials and tribulations, an approach to the final challenge, an ordeal, a reward, the journey back, a purification or resurrection into the normal world and a return home with the capabilities to alter the world in which he lives. Many heroes follow this journey and Forrest Gump is no exception.
