He led Battle of Concepcion. He had fought in the war of 1812 with his dad. James Bowie and 9 siblings fought Indians for their lives for 13 hours. He moved to Texas in 1830 and became a Mexican citizen, and married a Mexican. Bowie was baptized the Catholic faith in 1828. Bowie was commander of the volunteer at the battle Alamo. James Bowie stayed at the battle of the Alamo even though Texans were severely outnumbered by Mexicans. He could no longer command the volunteers when he became sick with pneumonia. However, that do not stop him from fighting until his death. David Crockett said that Bowie, even though he was very sick, would crawl out of bed everyday to show support to the volunteers at the Alamo. Although there are many stories about how Bowie died, the most popular version is believed that he continued to fight and shot while sick in bed during the final hours of the Alamo. He was shot times in the head when found in the ruins of the Alamo. James Bowie died when he was
Travis was born in 1809, and died in battle defending the fort known as the Alamo against overwhelming Mexican forces in 1836. He was the oldest out of his 11 brothers and sisters. His parents were Mark Stallworth and Jemima Stallworth. Travis officially became a lieutenant colonel in January 1836. On that same year the governor Henry Smith ordered for Travis and 100 reinforcements to arrive at San Antonio. James Bowie also arrived at the fort. The Texas army knew that they were outnumbered; therefore, Travis was sent a very deep profound letter to all Patriot Americans for aid. On March 1, 1836 Travis received 32 men led by Albert Martin and George C. Kimball. The reinforcements arrived, due to the meaningful letter Travis sent out to any that would listen. The town of Gonzales was the few to comply to Travis’s letter to provide reinforcements even though the people from Gonzales knew it was a lost cause due to the impact of lieutenant colonel’s words stating that Travis was determined to sustain as long as possible and die like a soldier whoever forgets what is due to his own honor and that of his country –Victory or Death. The Gonzales reinforcements were the few that came to Travis’s aid.
The Metamorphosis of Johnny Tremain Johnny Tremain is like a butterfly; he went through a transformation. Johnny Tremain is a book by Esther Forbes about a crippled boy during the American Revolution and the events he endures. A few major battles broke out before the Alamo such as the Battle of Gonzales, the Battle of Goliad and the Battle of Concepcion. The Siege of Bexar ended on December 11 with the possession of San Antonio where the former Franciscan mission, Alamo, stands. General Houston felt that holding San Antonio was both impossible and unnecessary, so he sent Jim Bowie to destroy the Alamo and come back with the men and cannons located there. When Bowie arrived, he saw it had strong defenses and decided to defend the city.
Captain John Gordon was an extremely interesting individual and ancestor of mine. I found out about him when I told my grandmother about how we were talking about Andrew Jackson in class. John Gordon was a very close friend to Andrew Jackson, helping him with many conflicts during the Creek War of 1813. He was born on July 15th, 1759 near Fredericksburg, Virginia. Captain Gordon was well known as an Indian fighter, as well as being a Postmaster, ferryman, and even a spy. Although John Gordon is not one of those people you read about in history books, his actions are very remarkable and worth recognition.
When he heard that they were closer than thought he sent Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett with 187 men in all to man the Alamo, The Mexicans sent a man with a white flag to get them to surrender but they fired a cannon ball at him, the Mexicans were so offended about them firing on a white flag that they vowed to fight to death. The battle of the Alamo lasted thirteen days and on the last day in less than thirty minutes all 187 men were dead. To add insult to injury they killed them, stripped them of their clothes and set their bodies on fire (Nardo, 2011). The final assault on the Alamo was brutal. The Mexicans numbered several thousand while there were only one hundred and eighty-two Texans.
On February 23, 1836, the arrival of General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army outside San Antonio nearly caught them by surprise. Undaunted, the Texians and Tejanos prepared to defend the Alamo together. The defenders held out for 13 days against Santa Anna's army. William B. Travis, the commander of the Alamo sent forth couriers carrying pleas for help to communities in Texas. On the eighth day of the siege, a band of 32 volunteers from Gonzales arrived, bringing the number of defenders to nearly two hundred. Legend holds that with the possibility of additional help fading, Colonel Travis drew a line on the ground and asked any man willing to stay and fight to step over — all except one did. As the defenders saw it, the Alamo was the key to the defense of Texas, and they were ready to give their lives rather than surrender their position to General Santa Anna. Among the Alamo's garrison were Jim Bowie, renowned knife fighter, and David Crockett, famed frontiersman and former congressman from Tennessee.
Davy Crockett, the celebrated hero, warrior and backwoods statesman, was born August 17, 1786 in a small cabin on the banks of Nolichucky River, near the mouth of Limestone Creek, which today lies about three and a half miles off 11-E Highway near Limestone, Tennessee.
Before becoming Oklahoma's representative, Jim Bridenstine did many other things. He flew the E-2C Hawkeye off the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier beginning his naval activation profession. Along with doing this, he flew combat mission in both Afghanistan and Iraq gathering most of his 1,900 hours along with 333 carrier rested landings! In addition, he also later flew at the Naval Strike and Air Warfare center. Once leaving active duty, he came back to Tulsa, Oklahoma to become the Executive Director of the Tulsa Air and Space Museum and Planetarium. Even before becoming our representative, he triple majored at Rice University. He also spent nine years in the Navy on active duty and got an MBA from Cornell University. Bridenstine cares about our state and making a difference. Running for Oklahoma's representative and then becoming our representative helped Jim achieve some of his goals including constitutional integrity, economic freedom and national security. Even before Jim entered into politics, he accomplished many great things.
William Barrett Travis, the leader of the Texan defenders requested for help and his requests were ultimately not met much to his frustration. The spirits of the defenders as well as Travis however still kept strong through their commitment to their cause as well as their faith in God. In the end however, Santa Anna’s forces ended up taking over the fort and as a result of their unwavering belief for their independence all the men that fought within the battle were all killed. And so, after March 6th, 1836 the Battle of the Alamo came to a close. As of now, the Alamo serves as a tourist spot and a reminder of the Texan struggle for independence that, as per Sam Houston’s wishes, will be
On his twentieth birthday Sam Houston enlisted in the regular army as a private. Within the year, he was promoted to Third Lieutenant to the 39th Infantry Regiment where Houston was badly wounded twice at The Battle of Horseshoe Bend during the War of 1812. The battle took place on the Tallapoosa River near present-day Alexander City, Alabama. His courage in combat caught the attention of General Andrew Jackson who promoted him to Second Lieutenant. In 1816 Houston was named an Indian sub-agent in Tennessee and soon after was promoted to First Lieutenant. Houston led a delegation of Cherokees to Washington, D.C. to meet with Secretary of War John C. Calhoun and President James Monroe. While there...
A Texan, William B. Travis and a small group of Texans attacked a squad of Mexican troops in Anahuac with the motive that “taxes should not thus be collected from them to support a standing army in their own country” (SOS 1) and soon drove them back. Travis retreated to San Felipe and were assisted to Bexar. Skirmishes and the threat of war with Mexico soon followed.
Jim Jones was the notorious cult leader of the Peoples Temple. Jones was born on May 13, 1931 in Crete, Indiana. He was a self-appointed pastor from a church in the Midwest. Jim had been popular for always wearing dark glasses, black suits and slicked-back hair, which made a splendid impression on the pulpit of the churches he had preached at or had been to. He then, in the mid-1960s, moved his congregation to California to, what he had wished, avoid the start of a nuclear war. Then, in 1974, he moved his people to Guyana after he was faced with financial abuses, criticism, and church beatings.

In 1957, a man who could be argued as the best football player of all time started his NFL career. He played his whole career for the team nobody wanted to play for, the Cleveland Browns. Jim Brown brought the Browns out of nothing and made them Champions throughout his career. Brown was known for his size, speed and explosiveness. Defenders did not know how to bring him down. Adrian Peterson is considered the modern-day Jim Brown. One thing some people do not know about the great Jim Brown is that he is a great activist for civil rights. Many young kids and students looked up to Jim Brown because he was such a great football player, but also because he always fought for equal rights. Whether one is a sports fan or not, he/she can appreciate
