One of the main reason’s that Jill Leovy, the author of the novel Ghettoside, wrote the book to make people around the world aware of the problem that is going on in this generation. People of all ages are being killed for no reason because racism is getting the best of people. Killings are happening because of racism, black lives are being taken and when it’s time to investigate who committed the murder, the right measures are not being taken because killings like this happen all the time. Jill Leovy wants everyone to be aware of the killings, because she wants everyone to know how poorly these black homicide investigations are being handled and how the people who were taken were actual people who had families and a life ahead of them. …show more content…
There are two methods that Leovy uses to make people aware of the problem that is going on. In 2007, Leovy started a blog called Homicide Report on the LA Times website. The Homicide Report blog has a story for every victim to get people to understand the seriousness of this problem on an emotional level. Leovy runs statistics on race, because she wants to know why the killings are happening among the race.
The second method that Leovy uses is her novel Ghettoside. In her novel, she talks about how West Los Angeles is the location of the majority of the city’s black homicides. She describes characters’ in her novel as heroic detectives who are different from other homicide detectives because they go over and beyond to do what they need to do to solve a case.
Leovy’s novel Ghettoside focuses on the 77th Division in South Central, Los Angeles. West Los Angeles, Compton and Watts are where the majority of the black homicides happen. A numerous amount of people die in these neighborhoods over territory, race, being affiliated in gangs etc. The characters that she used in her novel are actual people, she wrote about a detective team that are seen as heroes for the things that they do to solve cases. Many of the police officers and detectives that work in Los Angeles are afraid of being killed when they are in the streets and they risk their lives everyday on the job. Many of those who do work in this field don’t try too hard to solve these cases because they’re scared because they know how people in these neighborhoods can be they can be threatened or killed. There is one main detective in the novel,
whose name is John Skaggs. He is different from the rest of the detectives because he loves his job and he is dedicated. He has solved countless amounts of cases, which makes him the detective that likes to get things done. He is determined to solve all of his cases, when he needs questions answered he goes to witnesses houses and knocks on doors until they are opened. As soon as he is finished solving one case he goes to the next one, because he wants to help as many people as he can. Leovy focuses on one specific case throughout the novel: the Bryant Tennelle case. Bryant Tennelle got shot while he was walking on Eightieth Street in West Los Angeles with his friend. What’s ironic is that Bryant Tennelle was police officer Wally Tennelle’s son. The case is appointed to John Skaggs who does everything he can to find the murderers of Bryant Tennelle. Skaggs finds the killers Derrick Starcks and Devin Davis, he also finds a witness Jessica Midkiff who is willing to testify, so he keeps her in his home throughout the process of the investigation, for her safety. The Los Angeles judicial system doesn’t protect witnesses, which makes it hard for homicide detectives to support and solve their cases. Black homicide cases continue to happen because African-Americans suffer from the lack of response to the violence and death of the criminal justice system. Jill Leovy wrote this novel to show her readers how the characters in it were actual people who had families and lives but still got killed for no legitimate reason. She wants everyone to know that black lives do matter, and that they aren’t any different from anyone else because their black.
Rios describes how patrol officer didn’t really care, or to help these youth. Instead of helping out, law enforcement targeted these young deviant boys. Rios shows us a depth overview of Oakland Police Department. In doing so, he shows us how the miscommunication, and the inequality these law agencies in the inner city ghetto
Crazy neon lights, crowded walkways, the sweet aroma of Memphis barbeque, and the sound of soft blues and rock n roll is a taste of what Memphis’s Beale Street is made of. Memphis Tennessee is a home for exciting things to do within the surrounding metropolitan area. But first, what specifically brings civilians to Memphis? Memphis is a prime destination for tourist and residents of Memphis because of the great time, inexpensive attractions to visit, but most importantly Beale Street. Beale is a famous street located in downtown Memphis that is connected by three co-joining streets. Memphis’s Beale Street is one popular destination spot in downtown Memphis. On these streets are many tasty places to eat, local shops to visit,
When our parents tell us to “address the police by sir or ma’am, sit up straight, and don’t move too quickly, we ask ourselves why? It is in that moment we realize it is because that the world does not love us and wants us dead. This epiphany hardens us and strips us of our innocence and ability to float through the world. We are weighed down by the weight of hatred towards blacks. Our only chance of being able to free our minds is to live without fear of judgement, and without fear of persecution. Because if we do, we will always be looking behind our backs, overanalysing everything that is said to us, second guessing the work that we do, and never truly be able to trust the
On April 19th, 1989, Trisha Meili was the victim of violent assault, rape, and sodomy. The vicious attack left her in a coma for 12 days and The New York Times described it as “one of the most widely publicized crimes of the 1980’s.” The documentary, The Central Park Five, reveals the truth about what happened the night of April 19th, and how the subordinate group of young black boys were wrongly convicted. Analyzing the conflict theory of crime in association to the case of the central park five, understanding the way they were treated based on setting, why it was so easy for the law enforcement to pin the crime on the young black boys, and how wrongly convicting someone has great consequences along with relating it
What most people would think is that only black men and women are killed by police officers. Yet this year there has actually been more white individuals killed by police officers than any other race. This is only a problem, because when you read about police killings it is almost all about how police target people of color. With this idea it makes it so that people of color feel more like a victim in the country and are then scared of police officers, who are supposed to be there to help. The statistic of white people being killed by police officers is not covered by the media, because it is not as intriguing or as controversial as the other stories. It is very important that people know that police killings as a whole is an issue not just police killing minorities. Using social imagination and looking at this problem you can see why you would not want one group to feel victimized, which would lead to them striking back at the people that are there to help
Some could argue that his claims seem to be over the top of maybe even misinterpretations, thus he addresses this counter argument by explaining that he isn't the only black male who has been misjudged. “Such episodes are not uncommon. Black men trade tales like this all the time”(Staples 143). The fact that he adds the stories of other black men, such as the story of the young reporter being dragged violently out of his car at gunpoint; mistaken as a criminal(Staples 143), demonstrates that his arguments are not solely based on himself. The fear and uneasiness that an African American can experience who has not done anything around a police officer, a person who is suppose to help them in emergencies and who should provide a sense of tranquility, is alarming. There have been too many unarmed black men and women who have been misinterpreted, striped from thier rights and even their lives. The fact that people cannot trust law enforcement shows the negative effects that racial profiling has on society and it shows how nothing has changed since 1986, for a country like America, who is suppose to be the dream land this is disappointing. Staples is identifying the problem with societal views, he has not written a sob story with exaggerated experiences, he is shedding light onto a problem that is usually swept under the

The important little factors that led up to becoming huge and having great effects on Chicago race riots. For blacks and whites both the riot was just a built up increase of hostility that has been going on for quite some time. One thing that can be said about Chicago incidents seem to be the more ruthless and aggressive when compared to others. It may have been because of the black’s resist not to lie down and fight back. Most of the time it causes even more anger when compared to a nonviolent approach. In addition, the Chicago riots and the incidents that led up to it were huge in status. A young black man named Eugene Williams swam past an unseen line of segregation at a popular public beach on Lake Michigan, Chicago. He was stoned by several
After reading the essay “The Ghetto Made Me Do It” written by Francis Flaherty, I thought differently about the situation than I had before hearing both sides of this tragic story. My perspective changed from being bias toward Felicia Morgan to feeling a sense of sympathy for her. However, regardless of what defense there is to this story, it does not change how ruthless and tragic this homicide actually was.
Today there are many controversial subjects discussed throughout the media. One of the most discussed is race and the Black Lives Matter movement. Recently, I came across an article titled “The Truth of ‘Black Lives Matter’”, written by The Editorial Board. The article was published on September 3, 2015, to the New York Times. In the article, The Editorial Board writes about what they believe African Americans are facing as challenges in society today, including the all-too-common police killings of unarmed African-Americans across the country. The Editorial Board is right that some African Americans have been treated unfairly, but all ethnicities have been. Life is a precious thing that comprises all ethnicities. This brings us to ask; why
Freddie Grey, Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, John Crawford, Eric Gardner, Jordan Baker. These are just some of the many, many African American people that were killed by the police, all unarmed, all mistreated by the police, all shot and killed, without a crime.. Every twenty-eight hours a life is lost. There are hundreds of innocent lives that are being taken away from their families. Police officers, who are meant to protect and serve, are instead killing and abusing civilians. These outrageous crimes would be avoided through accountability of the police, use of body cameras at all times, and the use of social media.
In 2014, the death of Eric Garner in New York City raised controversial conversations and highlighted the issues of race, crime, and policing in neighborhoods that tend to be poor and racially isolated. Garner, an unarmed black man, was killed after being tackled and held in a “chokehold.” According to the AP Polls in December 2014, “Police killings of unarmed blacks were the most important news stories of 2014.” The problem is that young black men are targeted by police officers in which they have responded with the misuse of force and policy brutality. It is evident that this issue affects many people nationwide. The civilians do not trust the police department and the justice system because they hold the perceptions that police officers are immune from prosecution despite their actions. In particular, black individuals, specifically black males, do not feel safe in the presence of police officers because they are not held accountable for their mistakes.
Another reason racialized mass incarceration takes place is because of the high rates of poverty and unemployment for inner city African Americans, especially those with low education and low skill levels. Urban ghettos have been associated with the problem of social disorganization and crime. The biggest reason for this is the war on drugs. There is no substantial proof that verifies African Americans are more involved in illegal drug consumption than other groups are. However, they are arrested more than other groups.
For example, in 2013 an African American boy by the name of Kendrick Johnson was found dead on his high school gym mat (Johnson). Many believed the high numbers of police brutality killing, white people were killing our African American boys in any way necessary.
In Amanda Ngozi Adichie’s short story, “My Mother, the Crazy African American,” it presents mainly the relationship between mother and daughter’s relationship and their misunderstandings and struggles. Ralindu grew up in Nigeria. Ralindu’s father works in America and three years after his residency was approved Ralindu came to America, and she is now getting used to American style. This situation has cause problems with her mom who came to America with her. Her mother still sticks to their Nigerian traditions like foods and their mannerisms and she wants her daughter, Ralindu, to act like her. Ralindu wants to act as a typical American teenager and that induces the disconnection with Nigerian culture which causes misunderstandings and arguments in the relationship with her mother.
