Jesus Macedo-Perez was born on November 11, 1996, in Elkhart, Indiana. Jesus’s parents were separated and he was living with his mother in Elkhart, Indiana. He was believed to be a member of the Hispanic teenage gang group called The Latin Kings since the age of fourteen. Jesus shot and killed Braxton Barhams over the gang dispute and received 65 years in prison at the age of 17. He was sent to the Wabash Valley Correctional Institute facility for his sentence. In the case of Jesus Macedo-Perez, I believe the mitigating factors that influenced his actions in committing such a horrific crime were his affiliation with the gang members, his age, his troubled upbringing, the environment surrounding him, and his dysfunctional family. Jesus was also using drugs and actively involved in the gang activity in his hometown. Although the above factors may not be an excuse or justify the crime committed by Jesus Macedo-Perez, they have contributed to his decision-making and the tragic outcome of the situation in the murder of Braxton. As for whether I agree with the youth's sentence or not? I believe Jesus Macedo-Perez deserves his sentence based on the circumstances surrounding his case. Macedo-Perez was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder. The seriousness of the crime committed and the need to deter others from committing similar offenses were the factors the prosecutor focused on when Jesus was sentenced. I believe sentencing him to life in prison provided some justice to the victim and his family. Regarding the youth rehabilitation, I found it difficult to predict whether Jesus Macedo-Perez can be rehabilitated, due to the fact that he is serving a life sentence.
