Jerry Rice was very talented and caught the eye of college scouts and was enrolled at Mississippi Valley State University in 1981. Through his 4 year college career, he hauled in 4,692 receiving yards and collected and 18 Division I-AA records.

At this time Jackie was very into sports so this move made him pretty upset. He played baseball, basketball, football, and ran track while attending the University of California, Los Angeles. According to Talbot, the 49’s was one of the worst teams in history during the late 1970’s. It was a depressing and dark time in San Francisco, and the teams loses only seemed to make the city seem more angry and restless, but regardless, never unfaithful. It wasn't until they plummeted their losses and fired Thomas, that they decided to start seeking out their new angel, Bill Walsh.
