“The Planet of the Apes” was a movie that quickly became a classic during the 1960s. Its fresh ideas quickly gained popularity leading to a fanbase still active even today. This movie is not only known for its science fiction aspects but its original and avant-garde music. The composer, Jerry Goldsmith, pushed the boundaries of traditional film soundtracks and created pieces that are still compelling today. For example, the music during the “Human Hunt” and “No Escape” scenes are perfect for these scenes and really strike emotion into the viewers. Without the creations of Jerry Goldsmith, “The Planet of the Apes” would not have had as much of an impact as a revolutionary movie as it did. This movie is set on Earth two thousand years in the future, where apes have become the ruling …show more content…
It can be inferred that some disaster struck with humans all but wiped out and reverted to a primitive version of today. As such it can be assumed that the instruments Goldsmith uses to create this soundtrack are not those that would be found in the time period of this movie, such as the clarinet or the horn. The music style he uses can be described as avant-garde as he used unconventional means in order to achieve the sounds he desired. For example, he used horns blown without mouth pieces, and bass clarinetists fingering the notes but not blowing (Filmtracks Publications). Using these creative and untested tactics Goldsmith was able to create a soundtrack that pushed the boundaries of film music during this time. The first scene to be discussed is the “Human Hunt” scene. In this scene the lead, Taylor,
The film elects to use a soundtrack comprised of only popular music from the 1970s. Frith writes, “The sociologist of contemporary popular music is faced with a body of songs, records, stars and styles which exists because of a series of decisions, made by both producers and consumers, about what is a successful sound” (Frith, 134). I reference this quote because it is important to note that this film was released in 1993. The people who are responsible for choosing the soundtrack have the luxury of knowing what music is able to ...
To fully understand the relationship between a filmmaker and a composer, it is helpful to take a closer look at the filmmaker’s position towards music in film in general; these can of course differ substantially from one director to another. It seems, one must think, that the complete narrative and emotive potential of film music is not yet fully recognized and appreciated in many film produc...
The setting of the movie compared to the setting in the book makes Planet of the Apes one of the greatest satires. In the movie, the setting takes place on earth in the future where apes deny and are afraid of the past, whereas the setting in the book is on a different planet where apes are civilized and technologically advanced, and the humans were primitive creatures. The orangutans in the movie prevent what happened to the humans from happening to the apes. Orangutans, such as Zaius went to great work as destroying the cave where the evidence of the humans reigned is revealed and removing Landen’s memory. In the book civilization of humans on Earth is equal to and may even surpass the civilization of the apes on Sorror. The point of view in the book is through Ulysees’ mind. He is clam and patient. Taylor in the movie is an impatient angry man who is never satisfied and is outraged by the fact that apes are running the planet and have locked him up. In the movie Taylor is a misanthrope who is hot-tempered and not respectful to the apes. He calls them "Bloody Baboons!" Taylor left Earth to find a better place and ended up where he started. In the book, Ulysee is kind and respectful towards the apes, and he was granted citizenship to their civilization and begins to assign apes human features. Ulysee was granted citizenship because of the speech he made before them. He gave that speech with respect and loyalty towards the apes for acceptance. The tones in the boo...
There are many different ways to create sound on a film, often sound is used to symbolize certan things, and music is used to generate suspense, fear, joy, and many other different emotions. There are three different types of film sound used to create the world of a film; speech, noise, and music. In the scene "Breakfast Montage" Orson Welles uses many different sound techniques to create the world of film. Orson Welles used non digetic music to symbolize the change in Charles Kane and his first wife Emilys relationship. At first the music in the background was sort of romantic and uplifting ; later in their relationship when they were no longer seeing eye to eye on certain things the music was much more fast passed and symbolized a hostile enviroment. Welles also used non diegetic music to create tension between the two. Later in the scene Charles kane and Emily were arguing over something, its not very clear as to what they were disagreeing on but emily says "but people will think" and Charles responds with "what i tell them to...

After listening to all four movements of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C minor, I have suddenly been awakened to the tremendous influence that the Classical Form of music has had on modern day works, especially in the area of the film industry which it is used to create drama, tension, and joy. History owes a debt of gratitude to composers such as Ludwig van Beethoven, who build upon the legacy of pioneers such as Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to create his own unique blend of symphonic compositions which will be revered throughout generations because of their continued appeal to the

For this essay I will be looking at the work of Hans Zimmer to discuss how music in film engages the viewer and evokes emotion and pulls the viewer toward the film. Hans Zimmer is a German born music composer. Hans Zimmer’s love of music stems from his childhood when he learned how to play various instruments. Before Zimmer began composing music for films he was in a well-known band. The band was called The Buggles whom were famous for their song Video Killed the Radio Star. After the Buggles Zimmer played in other bands but never had another hit. As Zimmer has progressed as a film composer so has his list of nominations and awards. Zimmer has won 4 Grammy Awards and 2 Golden Globes and many more for his outstanding film scores. The reason I chose to write this essay on Zimmer was that his genres and music score are extremely versatile ranging from animations to comedy to dark thrillers. This is important to highlight as it shows Zimmer can create almost any atmosphere with his music whether it be sad or creating tension that all cause us to engage with the film. Zimmer's use of themes and introduction of different instruments allowed him to create these wonderful engaging film score. In this essay I will look at three films by Hans Zimmer these are The Holiday Rush and Rain Man.
While they just enter the cave, it is violins plucking make that background music. I have to say this scene really scares me because I am very afraid of spiders and the music at here plays in synch-point when they find out there are spiders on their bodies. When Jones turns back, the audience finally sees the spiders and there is a sudden sound made by the percussion and then followed by scratching strings’ sound play in a fast tempo. This creates the tensions of seeing those huge spiders and how Jones will overcome this problem. The music is kind of exotic since it is out of the normal music that we will hear from the orchestra, and it captures the dangerous and adventure unpredictable feelings since they are at the cave of the rainforest. Another example is the scene that happens around (00:36:23), which is when Jones and Marion arrived at Cairo. The music is different from what it was before since there was some western orchestra music before this. It adds more local instrument in the underscoring music, and I feel like it maybe some kind of instruments that are similar to flute or piccolo. Also, I hear some traditional percussion’s sound as well. Back into the releasing time of this film, many people may not have a comprehensive understanding of music from those cultures, and the composer basically helps us be more focused on the storyline
The movie Rise of the Planet of the Apes is an incredible science fiction movie that not only exposes the fault of the human mind, but also demonstrates a completely original structure and a unique point of view on an apocalyptic type film. The movie is based around a young scientist, Will Rodman, whom is in pursuit to find a cure for Alzheimer’s in hopes to cure his very sick father (Charles Rodman). He works in a science lab where their main test subjects are apes. When the initial tests go sour and one ape in the lab lashes out at another scientist causing chaos throughout the entire lab, all but one of the apes were euthanized. The ape that did not get killed was rescued by Will, and named Caesar. Will notices that Caesar is unusually smart, even for an ape, that is when he discovers that the effects of the medicine that was given to Caesar’s mother (ALZ-112) had been passed on to Caesar himself.
Music can decipher a narrative event by indicating a perspective. To unify a set of diverse images and provide rhythmic and formal continuity and momentum, a film’s structure is more often than not, directly articulated by a musical structure. Music can assist the dialogue and visuals of film and often is inaudible (e.g. music is meant to be heard unconsciously, not consciously). Music has been used by directors to reinforce or strengthen certain weak scenes in film and then on the other hand when music is not needed to reinforce a scene
Sound is what brings movies to life, but, not many viewers really notice. A film can be shot with mediocre quality, but, can be intriguing if it has the most effective foley, sound effects, underscore, etc. Sound in movies band together and unfold the meaning of the scenes. When actors are speaking, the dialogue can bring emotion to the audience, or, it can be used as the ambient sound. Music is one of the main things to have when filmmaking. The use of Claudia Gorbman’s Seven Principles of Composition, Mixing and Editing in Classical Film gives audiences a perspective of sound, and, how it can have an impact on them.
...n, the use of sound in films is highly significant in the development of the plot and in turn the development of the theme. Although, the sound components play a very significant role individually, it is through the combination and manipulation of such components that the sound design of the sound track has a greater impact emotionally upon the audience. Moreover, the effectiveness of this emotional impact can be significantly increased through the implementation of an effective combination sound to the image. Such combination can be seen within Gravity which exhibits a soundscape that successfully assist in bringing the world of the film to life. Sound is important to films and is an essential feature, many a time an audience will not even self-consciously acknowledge the music or sound effects but if they weren’t there the viewing pleasure would not be as pleasing
The importance of music in movies is highly regarded for manipulating the viewer’s emotions and helping them immerse into the story. Music is one of the prime elements in cinema. Without it a movie would feel dull and unexciting. There are three elements in a movie: one is acting, the second is picture, and the third one is music. It is a holy trinity; if incomplete, there would be a lack of sensation and excitement. Both acting and picture can stand independently from one another, but music is the one that makes the movie memorable.
