Growing up watching movies including murders and fatalities you would expect the standard “hit and run” situation. There would either be a robbery or some dramatic scene where an affair is going on and the partner is caught and killed. Never would someone think that a human could be so malicious compared to the notorious serial killers to this day, one of them being Jeffrey Dahmer. Many people just know his name through Katy Perry’s song “Dark Horse” where the featured rapper says, “She eat your heart out like Jeffrey Dahmer”. Where you can infer that Dahmer is a cannibal. But despite those accurate details there is more to the life of Dahmer than what a lyric entails.

was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was nicknamed “The Milwaukee Cannibal”. He was a white 34 year old man. Dahmer’s parents were named Lionel and Joyce and had a very unsuccessful marriage. They ended up having a divorce and that put a lot of psychological stress on Dahmer. At the age of 6, Dahmer had a surgery to correct a double hernia he had, but resulted in a lack of self confidence. His father then got offered a career opportunity in Ohio which required the family to move. This increased Dahmer’s insecurities and left his socially isolated. His aggression deepened and started to form social issues and the inability to make friends. It only got worse from there, those emotional struggles started to form into physical repercussions.
He started to show an interest in dead animals killing them and dissecting them. Which are early signs for serial killers. His alcoholism also formed during high school and he became an avid drinker. His alcoholism got so bad that it prevented him from getting the help he needed when he had the chance. His father sent him to enlist in the army but they kicked him out because of his alcohol problem. He also spent time in the hospital but was kicked out for the same issue. Dahmer then moved in with his grandmother and this is where things got strange. His grandmother found a .357 magnum gun underneath his bed and a male mannequin in his closet. chemicals. His first kill was in the summer of 1978. Dahmer was 18 years old at the time and his victim’s name was Steven Hicks. Steven was a hitchhiker who Dahmer offered a couple of beers back at his father’s house. Once Hicks went to go leave Jeffrey hit him over the head with a 10 pound dumbbell. The body was buried in the backyard. The next victim was Steven Tuomi killed in September of 1987 where Dahmer picked him up at a gay bar. This is where he killed a majority of his victims. Dahmer was also infamous for keeping the skull of his victims too; he once kept the heart of a victim in his refrigerator. Then in 1991 Konerak Sinthasomphone was kept hostage by Dahmer and fortunately escaped.
He was under the influence of drugs which caused the kid’s confusion. He was wandering the streets. Two women found him, called 911, but Dahmer told the police that Sinthasomphone was his boyfriend. They didn’t do a background check so Dahmer was off the hook. Sinthasomphone was later killed, dismembered, and his skull was kept as token and went along with the other skulls. Dahmer was primarily interested in African American males, as he wanted to collect their genitals and masturbate on top of them for some type of gratification. His response was that he was drugged by a “weird guy”. Edwards brought them back to Dahmer’s apartment, the police saw photographs of Dahmer’s rituals lying around once the door was opened. One of the cops restrained him and Dahmer was immediately arrested. Once on trial, Dahmer pleaded guilty by reason of insanity. Two weeks later the court decided that Dahmer was sane and guilty on 15 counts of murder. He was given 15 life terms, totaling 957 years in jail. Dahmer was killed in jail by another prisoner Christopher Scarver. Scarver beat in Dahmer’s skull with a metal bar. The story of Dahmer is quite out of the ordinary and some may even try to vouch that he was insane. His fantasies, physical acts, or emotions clearly were not rational. Dahmer was a unique individual and will always be remembered for his odd fixations.

Two examples of these monsters are serial killers Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer. A serial killer is classified as a person who kills three or more people, in separate events, over a time frame of a month, with “cooling off” periods in between. While Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer both share a sick twisted mind and a penchant for killing, differences in their upbringing, personality, and preferences drastically set them apart.

His spent his entire life feeling as an outcast in this giant world and struggled to find his voice and his sense of self. This leads me to perceive that Dahmer must have been displaying psychotic traits that went unnoticed and undocumented during his early lifetime. I can only speculate that this uncured mental illness lead Dahmer to develop and refine his inability to empathize with society; which in turn, lead him to engage in cruelty without mentally comprehending the victim’s suffering.
