Jefferson Finnis Davis was born on June 3rd, 1808. He was born in Christian County, Kentucky but was raised in Woodville, Mississippi. He attended college in Kentucky at Transylvania before starting his military career and entering the United States Military academy at West Point in 1824. He graduated in 1828 and placed 23rd in his class of 34.
After graduating, he served in the Blackhawk War. He was assigned to be the post of second-lieutenant of the first infantry. He fought and led the men from 1828-1833. In the Blackhawk war of 1831, they captured Chief Blackhawk and won him over with kindness toward him. In March 1833, he was promoted to be the first lieutenant and continued serving on the battlefield, fighting against Indian tribes. He was under the leadership of Commanding Officer Zachary Taylor, the future president of the United States of America.
In June 1835, Davis married Zachary Taylor’s daughter, Sarah Knox Taylor against, her father’s wishes. She died about 3 months after they were married of malaria. He was devastated after she passed away, so he continued the next te...
