Jeannette Walls grew up with her parents in southwest United States’ deserts with her nomad parents. Jeannette Walls parents, Rex and Rosemary walls, greatly influenced her life as a writer. Jeannette Walls love of reading and her love of her desert surroundings, along with the time period she grew up in is what influenced her to become such a great writer.

When Jeannette Walls was 17 when she moved to new york with her sister and went to high school where her teachers directed her towards an internship at an alternative newspaper. If Jeannette walls had not gotten tired of her parents nomad life, she may not have ever moved to New York with her sister, and would not have had teachers that directed her into a writing career. After highschool ,writing at the newspaper for several years, Jeannette Walls turned down offers from the New York Post and New York Daily News to write a daily gossip column, instead taking a job with Esquire in 1993, then moved to msnbc.com where her ¨scoop¨ ranked among the top. If Jeannette Walls had gone with the New York Post or Daily News, she

might not have been lead to msnbc.com, and without msnbc.com, she might have been pushed in a different direction as a writer. After Years at msnbc.com, Jeannette walls wrote the silver star, ‘Dish: the inside story’, and ‘The Glass Castle’. ‘The Glass Castle’ which really jumpstarted her career as writer. Without writing these books, it could have changed her path and many other people's paths in life.

Their parents were nomads, always moving through southwest desert towns, their father taught them, and their mother would not cook a meal that would last 15 minutes, instead would paint a painting that would last forever. I agree with the criticism´s argument. the Criticism says that through the story that Jeannette learns a lot of things and through what she learns she gets the determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms. In the book Jeannette Walls wondered about their nomad life, and wondered what was coming next, she asks her dad “Are we ever going home” (Walls). Jeannette walls never had a stable home growing up because her family was always on the move. Her father was a drunk, who would steal the grocery money and disappear for days, and her mother would rather paint a painting than cook a meal that would last fifteen minutes. In the story jeannette expresses her feelings about this by telling her dad: ”Why don’t you act like a dad” (Walls). Jeannette walls never had a real home cooked meal, Instead there were paintings. Jeannette Walls finally got the determination to get out and moved to New York with her sister. Jeannette walls expresses her feelings for getting out by telling her dad: “As soon as i finish classes, I’m getting on the next bus out of here” (Walls). This states that Jeannette Walls finally got the determination to get of her unstable house and carve out her life on her own terms.
With nomad parents and growing up in the southwest United States desert, JEannette Walls lived a very different life.
