I disagreed with Jeannette’s parents because they refused to get help from their daughter. This quote prompts me to believe that Jeannette uses and overlooks her parents, even though she turned out to love her parents dearly. Also, this quote foreshadows the daily struggles of Jeannette’s parents when they become homeless shortly after moving to New York. Unlike most people, Jeannette found joy in staying at the hospital. To her, the hospital stay was a way to get away from her life at home, where her family struggled on a daily basis. I could not imagine how Jeannette and her siblings felt when they realized that did not know when their next meal is coming. I cannot imagine how it feels to not have a home to go to at night. Jeannette loved her explorations and waking up during the early hours, which is something I also love. Jeannette always talked about wanting to go back the desert, where she felt more happy and safe. This quote is important because Rex taught Jeannette how to swim instead of sinking. Jeannette finally learned how to swim after she was thrown into the water numerous times by her father. Jeannette realized that you cannot expect a different outcome if you continue to do the same over and over again. Jeannette knew that she was her father’s favorite child, but they kept it a secret. As children, we should always remain faithful in what our parents do for us. No matter what the circumstances are, you should never be ashamed of your parents. The Walls family had a different, but special bond despite being a dysfunctional family, but what family is perfect? This quote enhances the relationship between Jeannette and her father. It is a true symbol of a father and his daughter’s love for one
