Jeanette wall a young girl with 3 siblings, 2 sisters and a brother an alcoholic father that was a malicious and her mom is struggling to be an artist. They never really settled down to a permanent home and were always on the road. The traveled to extraordinary towns, Jeanette loved it and was a very adventurous child at heart. Where she wrote this book it is based in the 70’s and lots of towns and families are struggling. Jeanette didn't see moving from town to town as a struggle, it was a never ending adventure with her parents and her siblings that were also her best friend. They didn't have a lot of money most of the time and struggled to make ends meet most of the time Most kids today don't think much of coming home to a fridge full of food and cupboards filled with snacks. Jeanette was extremely cultivating. Jeanette was her father's preeminent child, she felt like she had an extraordinary bond with him and they got along great. Just as any other girl though, Jeanette was going through the stage where the boys started to like her, but she didn't have “those” feelings for them. When a boy Billy took advantage of her, she didn't tell anyone because she was scared of what her family would think and do to this boy. It didn't happen often where she would meet a boy because they were always moving around so much. Jeanette didn't think anything of being poor, her family was the local pariah.
