My side of the Mountain is by Jean Craighead George, this book is about how a 12 year old boy named Sam Gribley lives in a crowded New York city apartment. He decided to run away to the Catskill mountains and make a life of his own. No one takes him seriously except himself. With only a penknife, a ball of cord, $40, and some flint and steel he has to rely on his ingenuity and land resources, to survive. Along the way he learns about courage, danger, and the true meaning of companionship. He captures all this in his notebook. My theme is that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. He always got his friends by having a fight first, then they became friends. This was the same as when he lived in New York. He woke to the same view, same street buildings all the time, and everybody was always in a rush. It was never calm in the city and seemed bland which is why he wanted a change. The second reason is that his dad laughed at him for him for saying he was going to survive in the wild. His dad thought he was joking and didn’t know Sam was serious. Sam’s dad thought he was just going to come back home and he would have another good laugh. Sam’s dad told him about the time he tried to run away and he was at the docks to leave and he went back home before anyone knew he was gone. The last reason was that he just wanted to run away and the Catskill mountains was just the place he wanted to run away to. There were mountains which meant there are a lot of animals in the forests and streams to eat from. There were large trees that you could build a house from or live in the tree itself. Finally, a person could could easily go to a near town at the bottom of the mountain and read books on how to make certain things to help you survive. They could do it by themself and look at the animals and see what food they’re eating and see if you could eat it
