Jealousy in William Shakespeare's Othello
In the play Othello, jealousy and envy are prominent themes from the
beginning to the end. As the play slowly unfolds it is evident that
jealousy is the cause of most of the dramatic actions which take place
in the duration of the play. It is described as the "green - eyed
monster." "Green" representing the colour of envy, and "monster" shows
how destructive and how vicious it can be. This quotation is said by a
character named Iago. Iago has a strong manipulative mind. He is the
first of all the characters in the play to be attacked by the "green -
eyed monster." This is very ironic, Iago is warning Othello to be
aware of jealousy, however what Othello does not know is that Iago is
the one that is building up the resentment within him. As the play
opens we see that Iago is already feeling jealous as he says "That
never set a squadron in the field, nor the division of a battle knows"
this portrays Iago's bitterness and towards Cassio. The reason for
this is, Cassio has just been promoted to lieutenant and Iago thinks
that he is the wrong man for the job. Iago thinks that he deserved it
more than Cassio. This quotation states that Cassio is not an
experienced or practical soldier and should not have the job.
However the main character that is affected by the venom of the "green
- eyed monster" is the main character in the play, Othello. In
Othello's situation, the poison of the jealousy grows slowly as the
play proceeds. Unlike Iago whose jealousy fires up as soon as he hears
about Cassio's promotion. The jealousy that Othello experiences
changes his whole character. Othello has a transformat...

jealousy.
In conclusion, it is fair to say that Iago did "enmesh" the characters
in his net of jealousy and did so successfully. However, Iago's lies
caught up to him, as in the end, Othello knew what he had done, as he
"strikes" Iago. He used carefully structured sentences to achieve
this. "Ha. I like not that" is a very good example of this. It is
clear that Iago is also capable of portraying what he wants in what
ever character he pleases to do so in. he uses evidence that is not
proper proof and makes it seem as real as reality. And example of this
is "the handkerchief."
After noticing what jealousy is capable of, it is clear why Iago says
that jealousy is a "green - eyed monster." Jealousy did not only
acquire dead bodies like Desdemona, but ruined the true love that
Desdemona and Othello shared.
In the play Othello, there are many jealous and selfish characters. Each of the characters at one point or another let their jealousy take over. It seems like they all have these plots and plans on how to hurt another character in the play either physically or emotionally, as an act of selfishness, so that they can feel better about themselves. One main character who seems extremely jealous in this play is Iago. Infact, probably the most jealous. Many bad things happen because of Iago. The first bad thing that Iago did, was tell Barbantio (Desdamona's father) that Desdemona has married Othello, the Moore. Iago was mad at Othello, because Cassio had made Othello a higher position and not Iago. Iago thought that he was the one who qualified for the position as general, not Othello. Iago was jealous because of this, so he decided to tell Barbantio about Desdemona and Othello. This was bad, because Barbantio did not know yet, and something like that should have been said by his own daughter, not someone who was not part of the family. The way Iago went about telling him was also bad. He called to his house in the middle of the night. He yelled it to Barbantio from downstairs into his window in a rude manner. " quote from Othello here." He wanted Barbantio to be upset about what had happened, and most of all, he wanted Barbantio to be mad at Othello and do something bad to him.
jealousy which moves him to do many evil things in the play. He pays Iago large
“Think on thy sins” (5.2.43) he says, “They are loves I bear to you” (5.2.44) I respond. “Ay, and for that thou diest” (5.2.45). There is no pleading with my lord, his once amorous filled eyes are now brimming with anger, and anguish. This whole conversation has turned my mind into mush. How can he think that I would ever love Cassio? Is it not plain that he, Othello, is my lord and the only object of my affection? Does it not matter? I think it doesn’t. Othello’s whole body is shaking (5.2.50) and his eyes are rolling (5.2.41), these signs do not bode well for my life. Worse yet, he has already had Cassio killed. “Oh, banish me, my lord, kill me not!” (5.2.88) I beg, “Down, Strumpet,” he is undeterred (5.2.89). “It is too late” (5.2.95). I am not sure if I thought that, or if Othello said it. Either way, it is too late. His strong, calloused fingers are clutching my throat, violently squeezing until all of the air leaves my lungs. Spots- I see spots. Brightly colored yellow, red and blue spots. The spots grow and take shape. Images and scenes from my life are passing before my eyes, and then it hits me. “O, falsely, falsely murdered!” I cry (5.2.126). Emilia is here, “… Sweet Desdemona, O sweet mistress, speak!” she begs (5.2.131). I must tell her, “A guiltless death I die” (5.2.132). “O, who hath done this deed?” Emilia inquires (5.2.133). She has to know the truth, “Nobody, I myself. Farewell. Commend me to my kind lord. O, farewell” (5.2.134-135).

Throughout Othello’s journey, it is apparent he had many drastic changes in his behavior and how he reacted to people as he became more and more upset. He went from being a gentle and calm character, to a paranoid and insecure character, to an out of control and enraged monster. In the end, he finds out the truth as to what was really going on, ultimately resulting in Othello’s suicide.
the possibility that his wife was cheating on him. Nobody suspects that Iago is a deceitful
Roderigo ‘s disappointment is strong due to the large financial deposits Roderigo had made to Iago to win Desdemona’s love. Iago’s jealousy soars upon hearing the news of Michael Cassio’s promotion to lieutenant, which Iago had been passed over for. Roderigo lets it be known Iago serves Othello, while Iago states “I follow him to serve my turn upon him.” The sarcasm in Iago’s statement shows Iago’s disloyal service to Othello. Iago only serves Othello for further advancement of Iago’s own power.
In this particular question the assessment objectives which are being addressed are AO1, AO4 and AO5. The question does not demand the close reading of a passage or its connection to the test of the play required by AO2 and AO3. What is important is a good overall understanding of the play in relation to the question, an ability to engage in critical debate and to recognise that texts can be interpreted in different ways, and a sense of how an understanding of context could illuminate the issue.
role in the outcome. Iago was very consumed in the idea of revenge and wishing to be of
One of the main conflicts in “A Midsummers Night’s Dream” is romantic love, and the jealousy that arises from it. In “A Midsummers Night’s Dream,” Shakespeare presents both sides of romantic love, detailing Lysander and Demetrius’ love for Hermia as well as presenting the jealousy that arises from Helena because of it. Because both sides of love are presented, readers are able to see how both sides are able to transform people. The true love between Lysander and Hermia transforms Hermia for the better, giving her the personal strength and bravery to stand up to Theseus and her father to fight for her love instead of remain the submissive girl she was taught to be. The jealousy that spawned from the romantic love that Demetrius had for Hermia transformed Helena for the worse, however. Helena was so lost in her infatuation for Demetrius, she was willing to betray her life-long friend Hermia by telling Demetrius of Lysander and Hermia’s plans to elope together. Helena was willing to ruin Hermia’s one chance at happiness for the slight chance that
Before anything, we must address that Iago was disappointed that he was passed over for the position of lieutenant. This argument was presented within the first few lines of Iago very bluntly. From the play, we find that Iago was obviously more capable than a drunken Vinetian, Cassio, for the position. Yet, in spite of everything, the promotion was given to him and Iago took it as a personal insult from Othello. His hate erupted quickly and a plan erupted to take proper revenge. As we see since the first lines of the play from Iago, he hates Othello.
Iago is very determined and emotionless. He brings negative outcomes to every character he comes in contact with. Although Iago characterizes himself as noble, the reader can see him for the villain he is. Throughout the play Iago’s every decision is on how
So, he invents and elaborate scheme to destroy Othello through his woman. When Othello demands proof of her infidelity, Iago says: “I do not like the
In the play A Midsummer's night dream, William shakespeare expresses love, blind and Hate through some of the characters in the play. I'm going to be focusing on Helena and how she shows/tells us ( the audience ) about love. The basis of Helena is that she is in love with demetrius but demetrius doesn't want her. Then once demetrius finally wants her she doesn’t want him because he is under a love potion.
While I do agree that the play shows some emphasis on the power of love and what it can do to weak minded men like Othello, I completely disagree with Carol Neely and actually think that Othello’s central theme revolves around race and jealousy. Racism is clearly seen in the play and it plays an important role in Othello’s behavior and actions. Jealousy is also seen all over the play and is fueled by circumstantial evidence in the play instead of real facts, but nevertheless, this is what drives Othello to kill his wife and Iago to manipulate everyone around him to do his evil deeds.
