Robert Olen Butler’s “Jealous Husband returns in form of Parrot” is a story of a married man who has suspicions that his wife has been unfaithful and in his effort to catch her he finds the address and name of her lover and goes to his house in hopes of catching her in the act. Seeing no other way into the house he begins to climb a tree to look into a window but loses his balance and falls to his death. He is then reincarnated into a parrot at a pet store and is bought by his wife. Now as a parrot he can witness his wife's adultery everyday and blames himself for pushing her to cheat. The conflict in this story is both internal and external.
The external conflict is that as a parrot the narrator cannot communicate his thoughts and feelings to his wife which frustrates him.The internal conflict is the feelings the main character struggles with such as his jealousy and insecurities over his wife's adultery with other men, and his ruined pride due to her bringing the men to their home and in their bed. The setting is very specific it is in Houston, at the home of the narrator and his wife before he died and was reincarnated. By making the setting at the narrator's home it causes the narrator to have flashbacks and reminisce about the good and bad memories with his wife which causes his emotions to be raw and uncontrollable; because he is watching his wife bring these men into their home and their bedroom. The fact that the birdcage is sitting at an angle and hinders him from seeing into his bedroom and only allows him to hear the sounds emitting from it. The point of view for this story is first person which is appropriate for this story because it helps the reader to better feel and understand the husband's feelings and thoughts towards his situation and his wife, which is ironic due to the fact that he couldn't even express himself to his wife which lead to his problems in the first
place. The theme of this story is jealousy, relationships are already complicated enough and need a lot of work, but when jealousy and lack of communication is added in it causes problems. The central idea of this story is the fact that we all experience jealousy, and how it affects each person is different but ultimately it can cause of demise. The man is jealous, and doesnt want his wife around other men. It is suggested that he questions her and; stalks her as she talks about the people at her job and around her. When she becomes upset at this, he stops talking about it. ‘locked myself in the bathroom because I couldn't rage about this anymore.’ He says at one point and instead he takes to following her, which leads to his death. He even experiences jealousy when he sees her in the store. While she pets him and he notices other men around her, his feathers fluff up and he becomes upset but its nothing he can accurately portray as a parrot. The husbands jealousy eats at him so much so that he is unable to live in the same with her. Even though he loves her he knows how she is, he knows there will be more men, and that he will have to see them enter the bedroom with his wife. He cant take this, and so he dies again.

The reason she runs away in the first place is because her dad tells her that her mom left her, which is both an internal, and man versus man conflict. She?s mad at her dad for saying it, but can?t fully convince herself that it isn?t true. There?s a man versus society conflict when men beat up Rossaleen because of her color, and another internal conflict when May is so overcome with grief that she cant stop crying.
Throughout history, the story of womankind has evolved from struggles to achievements, while some aspects of the lives of women have never changed. Poet Dorianne Laux writes about the female condition, and women’s desire to be married and to have a home and children. She also seems to identify through her poetry with the idea that women tend to idealize the concept of marriage and settling down and she uses her poetry to reach out to the reader who may have similar idyllic views of marriage or the married lifestyle. Though Dorianne Laux’s poem “Bird” reads very simply, it is actually a metaphor for an aspect of this female condition.
In the short story “The Fan Club,” the protagonist is Laura and the antagonist is Rachel. Throughout the story, our protagonist faces both internal and external conflicts, not only with herself but with other characters. For example, both the protagonist and antagonist face an external conflict with each other. Laura and Rachel have an awkward interaction. The narrator states, “She turned to go, but Rachel still stood there, her mouth half open, her pale, moon-like face strangely urgent. It was as if an invisible hand tugged at Laura’s sleeve.” This quote shows that Laura is embarrassed by talking to Rachel in the hallway which creates an external conflict. “They”, a group of students that go to Laura’s school can see both Rachel and Laura talking so Laura doesn’t want to give them another reason for them to talk about Laura because she thought that they were talking about her that morning. When Laura tries to walk away from Rachel, she gets drawn back into the conversation. Laura clearly shows no interest in talking to Rachel but Rachel keeps talking to her.
As you can see, there are a lot of major internal conflicts. However, there are many more not so important conflicts that weren’t listed! Ranging from racism to loneliness, the characters in this novel have gone through a lot, physically and mentally. As the novel progresses all the characters seem to go from a negative, depressed mental state to a positive and loving one. Jefferson dies with courage because Grant was able to crack Jefferson and help him, which also ended up helping himself. Miss Emma and Tante Lou are now at peace thanks to Grant’s affect on Jefferson. The only reason the novel ended with everybody in a positive state of mind is due the decisions and actions made because of the internal conflict. In conclusion, internal conflicts are very important to the story causing conflicts and plot twists to interest the reader and pull the novel together.
The protagonist of the story is Jing-mei. She is a flat character who turns out to be dynamic. Throughout her life, she has been very stubborn about accepting her identity. An example of this is when she explains, "I was 15 and had a vigorously denied that I had any Chinese whatsoever under my skin" (857). She shows her dynamic characteristic at the end of the story when she finally does accept her heritage.

I will be comparing both of Poe’s books “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Raven” focusing on the narrator, setting, and the tone. I believe the conflict in the story is an internal one. I think it is the conflict between the old woman's will power and Mother Nature. She encounters many obstacles that would influence most people to give up but she has motivation to get her task done. These encounters include a bush catching onto her dress, a scarecrow frightening her and discouragement from a white man. She also had to climb hills, cross streams and crawl under barbed wire fences which is certainly not considered an easy task for an elderly woman.. If I was forced to deal with these obstacles I know that I would most likely have turned around but her will power was too strong to let Mother Nature win.

The birdcage represents how Mrs. Wright was trapped in her marriage, and could not escape it. The birdcage door is broken which represents her broken marriage to Mr. Wright. It also represents Mrs. Wright escaping her marriage from Mr. Wright. When the door is open it allows Mrs. Wright to became a free woman.
