On March 21, I attended Band & Jazz Concert at Lindhurst High School. This event was free for audience to attend and it took place in the gym from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. Five different groups performed at this concert, and I attended the whole concert. Yuba College Jazz Ensemble performed second. Their performance was supposed to be conducted by Cookie Molina, but due to family emergency, it was conducted by Dr. Allan Miller. This group was of 17 members. They performed four stylistically different pieces that allowed the audience to experience the various sounds of jazz music. This song need a full score vocal, Alto Saxophones, Tenor saxophones, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpets, Trombones, Guitar, Piano, Bass, and Drums. This song was featured in the movie “Mr. Holland’s Opus”. At the concert, Marylou Brown did great job as a vocalist. Her voice was very sweet and peaceful. One thing that really stood out to me during the performance was the drums (percussion). I have always seen people playing drums with the stick, but for the first time, I saw someone playing drums with the brush. Ron “Tapper” Hake was playing percussion during the performance, and his technique of using brush created a more emotional feel to the song. This song was originally performed by B.J. Thomas. This song had very unique and interesting beginning. All the performers were creating sound of boo boo.. while they were playing their instruments. They played trumpet and saxophone together. Then they started to play trumpet and saxophone turn by turn. During the whole song, drums, piano, guitar, and a long instrument were played continuously in the background. It was a great performance. Another thing that took my interest during this performance was the instrument used by Marylou Brown. She was creating music by using a small brick and stick. I did not find the name of that instrument, but it was a very entertaining
This was my first Jazz event I had ever been to. I went to see the band The Chairman and the Board. This was a blues swing band. Having been to other concerts, I was expecting something similar as far as atmosphere and crowd. I was proved very wrong as this concert defied all my expectations and was in a whole different field as far as life entertainment goes. The first thing I noticed right off the bat was the audience. The age range of this audience was mainly 40-70. I definitely felt like the odd man out when I was there. It did get me thinking though, why was this audience so much older? I looked into the era of when most of those people were born, which was roughly around the years 1935-1980. I came to find out that in the 1940s bebop jazz had been created and swing music was very popular. Also at this time cool jazz emerged. It appears the 1940s were a wonderful time for jazz. In the 60s, Cuban jazz appeared. Every year there was something new and on the cutting edge in jazz. I think the reason no young people were there was because jazz is no longer a part of the modern-day music. It's not played on the top hits of the year radios. It's lack of exposure has made young people unaware of its glory. I don't see any advertisements for jazz music on the tv, or social media. I never hear about jazz while listening to the radio. It could be that teens want something to relate to in their music, that also has a catchy beat and modern lyrics. This event was hosted at the only live entertainment specific venue in Big Bear which is the cave. They have concerts there every weekend. This venue was absolutely perfect for this type of band because it was quaint and quiet with a respectful (yet very engaged) audience. I had no problem hearing what the performers were saying, Despite being far from the stage. The lighting at this venue looked like an old school jazz concert
The concert is performed by the Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. The video of this concert is 90 minutes in length. The concert was an ensemble of various Dave Brubeck arrangements utilizing various jazz techniques and styles with mainly the following instruments: bass, piano, trumpet, trombone, tenor sax, soprano sax, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto sax, flute, piccolo, baritone sax, drum, and tambourine. The performance included these 15 pieces: “Unsquare Dance”, “Three to Get Ready”, “The Duke”, “Cassandra”, “Strange Meadowlark”, “Who Will Take Care of Me?”, “It’s a Raggy Waltz”, “Tokyo Traffic”, “Take Five”, “Lost Waltz”, “Upstage Rhumba”, “In Your Own Sweet Way”, “Fast Life”, “Bluette”, and “Blue Rondo a la Turk”. The performance highlights the versatile, influential and extraordinary life’s work of Dave Brubeck.
Music is magical: it soothes you when you are upset and cheers you up when you are down. To me, it is a communication with souls. I listen to different genres of music. When appreciating each form of music, with its unique rhythm and melody, I expect to differentiate each other by the feelings and emotions that it brings to me. However, I would definitely never call myself “a fan of jazz” until I witnessed Cécile McLorin Salvant’s performance last Friday at Mondavi Center. Through the interpretations and illustrations from Cécile’s performance, I realized that the cultural significance and individual identity are the building blocks of jazz music that create its unique musical features and support its development.
I chose to do my concert critique on Eric Clapton-MTV unplugged full concert-HQ January 16, 1992 at Bray Film Studios in Windsor, England. Eric Clapton is my favorite rock n roll singer which has a mixture of genres. The concert was inside and on stage. The audience was seated up close to the stage which made the atmosphere comfortable; Eric and the band showed much warmth and connected with the crowd it wasn’t like the band was untouchable.
The event I attended was “An Evening of Jazz” concert held at the Fine Arts Hall on November 17 at 7:30 p.m. The performing groups were The Santa Fe Rhythm and Blues Review, The Santa Fe Jazz Combo, and Santa Fe Big Band. On Tuesday, October 17, 2017, I attended a musical concert. This was the first time I had ever been to a concert and did not play. The concert was not what I expected. I assumed I was going to a symphony that featured a soloist clarinet; however, upon arrival I quickly realized that my previous assumptions were false. My experience was sort of a rollercoaster. One minute I was down and almost asleep; next I was laughing; then I was up and intrigued.
... began the piece, and the beat of the drum was frequent. After the introduction, the rest of the musicians joined. The pianist also had a solo part with the companion of the drum. The pace of the song was moderately fast, and the song ended with a climax.
I counted nineteen total performers with occasionally two others and a vocalist. Each performer was dressed in black pants and a black shirt except one who showed up late. He was wearing blue jeans and a sports coat and he definitely stood out from all the others. The performers related very well with the audience. The majority of the pieces featured a rather slow steady beat, provided by the drum and the piano, while the other instruments (mainly the brass section) were used to play the main motif along with some minor ornamentations. The third song they played, one of my favorites, was simply a steady 4/4 tempo kept by the drum, with some minor variations. The saxophone and trumpets took turns drifting in and out to carry the melody. The saxophone player delivered an entertained solo which consisted of very light and amusing trills, this created a very soothing and relaxing
While the musician?s were playing, I was surprised how the audience was. Most of the audience was talking loud, drinking alcohol and eating snacks. Some audience was even clapping hands and humming along with the song. This was quite an opposite environment compared to the concerts I went to. Sometimes the audience was so loud that I could barely hear the songs. It was interesting that even though the crowd was so loud, the musicians seemed very comfortable with it. They played the song as if the audience?s voice was also part of their song. When audience was loud, they would play loud and when audience became quite, they played very soft and tender. The jazz band I observed played a series of six different songs. Although all the songs were categorized as jazz, each song had its own special style and sound to it. The band consisted of three different players. Paul Meyers, the guitarist and composer, Andy Eulau, the bassist, and Dave Rataczak, on drums. The songs performed were entitled “Love for Sale” by Cole Porter, “Once I Loved” by Antonio Carlos Jobim, “Stars” by Paul Meyers, “Blues for Mel” also by Paul Meyers, “Last Night When We Were Young” by Harold Arlen, and “Samba Novo” by Luis Eca.
I noticed he constantly switched from the synthesizer to the keyboard, and this was to change the tune and make it sound layered as I mentioned before. I also noticed that at times he played the keyboard slowly and other times he would play extremely fast. So rapidly that I even questioned how a man can first not only move his arms so fast but also play so beautifully at such high speeds. A tune he played even sounded like a swish-swashing sound, and I was amazed by how a synthesizer and keyboard can possibly make such sounds. I also noticed that for this song that both Lionel Loueke and Dave Holland played the guitar, and I think this was to match the fusion electric instrument style. Overall, the entire band did a great opening for their performance; everyone looked like they were doing their own thing and were very content.
The brass plays an ascending sequence, followed by pizzicato notes played by the strings, and an ascending and descending scale on the harp. Strings and oboe play the rhythmic melody, whilst the trumpet plays fanfares in syncopation. The oboe is then replaced by the flute. There is an ascending scale played by the strings, then the brass section repeats the string and oboe melody with cymbal crashes at cadence points. The orchestra then plays a loud melody with cymbal crashes and drum rolls. There is an interrupted cadence, followed by crescendo with cymbal crashes and a brass ostinato. The piece ends with a perfect cadence.
There was multiple instruments played like the Piano, Trumpet, Clarinet, and the Euphonium. Additionally there were multiple voice tones like Baritone and Tenor. This variety also made the performance well worth attending. My favorite part of the entire forum was the last piece entitle “Lord of the Dance” by Ronan Hardiman. This song performance was the most dynamic and grand song that was played.
