On March 21, I attended Band & Jazz Concert at Lindhurst High School. This event was free for audience to attend and it took place in the gym from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. Five different groups performed at this concert, and I attended the whole concert. Yuba College Jazz Ensemble performed second. Their performance was supposed to be conducted by Cookie Molina, but due to family emergency, it was conducted by Dr. Allan Miller. This group was of 17 members. They performed four stylistically different pieces that allowed the audience to experience the various sounds of jazz music. This song need a full score vocal, Alto Saxophones, Tenor saxophones, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpets, Trombones, Guitar, Piano, Bass, and Drums. This song was featured in the movie “Mr. Holland’s Opus”. At the concert, Marylou Brown did great job as a vocalist. Her voice was very sweet and peaceful. One thing that really stood out to me during the performance was the drums (percussion). I have always seen people playing drums with the stick, but for the first time, I saw someone playing drums with the brush. Ron “Tapper” Hake was playing percussion during the performance, and his technique of using brush created a more emotional feel to the song. This song was originally performed by B.J. Thomas. This song had very unique and interesting beginning. All the performers were creating sound of boo boo.. while they were playing their instruments. They played trumpet and saxophone together. Then they started to play trumpet and saxophone turn by turn. During the whole song, drums, piano, guitar, and a long instrument were played continuously in the background. It was a great performance. Another thing that took my interest during this performance was the instrument used by Marylou Brown. She was creating music by using a small brick and stick. I did not find the name of that instrument, but it was a very entertaining
