Jay's Treaty
"If this country is preserved in tranquillity twenty years longer, it may bid defiance in a just cause to any power whatever; such in that time will be its popularity, wealth and resources," stated by George Washington in response to demonstrators over the Jay Treaty. 1 Washington's remark was regarding the public's uproar following the release of information on the status of the discord with Great Britain. The people had just been informed of the contents of the Jay Treaty which were: 1) Britain agreed to give up the fur posts in American territory, 2) Britain also agreed to submit to arbitration the questions of disputed boundaries, the damage done to American shipping, and the debts due to British merchants. Although the people did not like these terms, Washington supported them to prevent us from going to war. Washington made his first move by sending a delegate to England, and furthermore by standing up to congress to get this treaty ratified. He demonstrates again his great moral coura ge for the welfare of his country.
Although Washington himself did not write the treaty he deserves all the credit for initiating it in the first place. The times had become rough with the British, and according to Hamilton the British were a vital part of our economy. He said " …the tax on imports furnished much of the money for paying off our foreign, domestic, and state debts." 2 Along with the British's impressment of American seamen and their role in our economy Washington knew something had to be done. Washington knew that the tension between America and
England had to be thinned out so he decided to send over a special envoy. The individual chosen for the job was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, John Jay.
John Jay had much experience in this department because he was the former
Secretary for Foreign Affairs under the old Confederation. His objective was to make peace between the two countries. He was under instructions to make no commitment in violation of the treaties with France. Fortunately, Washington came to terms to do this, otherwise our infant country may never have grown into what it is today. This indubitably turned out to be one of Washington's bolder moves towards assisting his country.
Another powerful move was demonstrated by Washington as he persuaded the
Senate to ratify the treaty. The Jay Treaty was signed on November 19th , 1794, but was not ratified by the Senate until seven months later. "President George
Washington's signing of the Jay Treaty provoked unimaginable criticism of his

These temptations, many times, often lead to an increase in the chances of George, Rameck, and Sam's character cracking. For these reasons it made it hard for them to stay on the right track in life and to deviate away from what they were being raised in and to become better than that. Positive influences in their lives prevented them from succumbing to the calls of the streets and of the accepted norms. People such as the karate teacher who helped build self confidence and respect. Theodore Roosevelt was one of our greatest presidents. He created the FDA and improved the position of the presidency greatly. Before Theodore came to be president, the position of presidency was slow and wasn’t very interesting so he made the executive branch more powerful by starting new reforms and a strong foreign policy. The life of a president is hard. It is full of stress, responsibilities, and a strong dedication the welfare of your country. Theodore had to deal with all of these presidential stresses, taking up much of his time. Do you know, though, that despite being a president, he led a life of excitement and freedom that many other presidents had never before experienced? Theodore, “Teddy” as his first wife Alice called him, Roosevelt was more than just our president, he was a dedicated author who wrote many books; he was also a rancher, and, surprisingly, he was a big time hunter. Even though Theodore Roosevelt was a president, his life was filled with exciting adventure, times of hardships, responsibilities to many, and influences upon many government positions.
During the treaty of Paris, Britain had captured many French colonies but they realized that they would not be able to keep peace if they kept all of the territory in their possession. Thus began what is often known as the Canada versus Guadeloupe debate. It shows the divide of interests where France turned more towards maritime and tropical powers, whereas Britain moved toward more control over their colonies and expanding their territory. (16) Many citizens actually weighed in to eventually influence the decisions by parliament. The reasons for keeping Canada were well addressed in a letter From a Gentleman in Guadeloupe to his Friend in London: “We are able to supply every demand of sugar without Guadeloupe; we are not able to carry on the fur-trade with advantage except we can keep Canada.” (15) The fur trade was an abundant part of the British wealth at that point, and many citizens believed that it was more important the sugar trade as they had access to that from other places. John Douglas, the Bishop of Salisbury, wrote in his letter advocating for keeping Guadeloupe: “[Guadeloupe] alone employs a great number of ships, and that all the Islands which we have at present scarce produces sugar enough to supply our home Consumption… Of great Use, therefore, that Island would be to us.” (14) He also wrote about that these exports from Guadeloupe would enrich the British Empire immensely more than Canada. A differing argument was then heard in the same chain of letters “Unless we should choose to … keep great Bodies of Troops in America, in full peace, at an immense Expense; we can never consent to leave the French any Footing in Canada.” (16) This was the general though when the British finally decided in the Treaty of Paris, which was “done at Paris, this third day of September in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and eighty-three,” (20) to lay out that France would receive

When we look at just a few of the specifics of our trade with the U.S., we find that:
Theodore Roosevelt was the most active and energetic president the United States had ever seen. As well as being the most loved and popular president, Roosevelt loved being president. In 1901, Roosevelt became the nation’s youngest president. During Roosevelt’s presidency, he was able to accumulate many great accomplishments with few failures and gain the support and respect of many Americans.
Despite the fact that these agreements were a clear violation of existing British law, they were used later to justify the American takeover of the region. The Shawnee also claimed these lands but, of course, were never consulted. With the Iroquois selling the Shawnee lands north of the Ohio, and the Cherokee selling the Shawnee lands south, where could they go? Not surprisingly, the Shawnee stayed and fought the Americans for 40 years. Both the Cherokee and Iroquois were fully aware of the problem they were creating. After he had signed, a Cherokee chief reputedly took Daniel Boone aside to say, "We have sold you much fine land, but I am afraid you will have trouble if you try to live there."
Along with new money comes the ability to spend it. The Industrial class did exactly that, using their newly acquired
Before his image was blasted along a mountainside, Theodore Roosevelt engraved his presence into American history as a man of action. A man which would find himself in many positions of responsibility and authority. Roosevelt’s reputation as a leader had been proven in the oval office and on horseback riding toward the frontlines. His progressive policies both foreign and domestic, launched the United States into a new era which would set the tone and give the nation the momentum it would need for years to come. Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt being behind a desk or in front of the charge embodied the American spirit and put forth the great standard which for years, Roosevelt himself would adhere to.
Roosevelt died in his sleep on January 6, 1919 in Long Island home. He was buried in the Young’s Memorial Cemetery in New York. Roosevelt throughout his life wrote more than twenty five books on history, biology, geography, and philosophy. Roosevelt was the first ever president to get the Medal of Honor. Roosevelt help fight for the hundreds of million acres of national forests in the US.
As the 26th president of the United States and also the youngest president ever elected, Theodore Roosevelt faced many challenging decisions, but he knew how to handle them. He fought for what he believed and never backed down from that belief. Theodore Roosevelt faced challenging circumstances while growing up which made many consider him to be frail and not likely to succeed; however, he came to be known as a notable statesman, military leader, governor, vice-president of the United States, and finally the most powerful leader in the free world, President of the United States of America.

Today was a long day. The vote for Lafayette martial law passed, at this I am frustrated. For we are as good as dead if we let him have power. This situations calls for a riot. There needs to be change, a revolution. Tension is slowly building now that the National Guard has crushed some rioters. This is proof that the king does not care for us, he has rejected us and has not let our voices be heard no matter how loud we beg. For it “is indivisible for the same reason that it is inalienable. For either the will is general or it is not,” wrote Rousseau in the social contract.
The lives and prosperity of millions of people depend on peace and, in turn, peace depends on treaties - fragile documents that must do more than end wars. Negotiations and peace treaties may lead to decades of cooperation during which disputes between nations are resolved without military action and economic cost, or may prolong or even intensify the grievances which provoked conflict in the first place. In 1996, as Canada and the United States celebrated their mutual boundary as the longest undefended border in the world, Greece and Turkey nearly came to blows over a rocky island so small it scarcely had space for a flagpole.1 Both territorial questions had been raised as issues in peace treaties. The Treaty of Ghent in 1815 set the framework for the resolution of Canadian-American territorial questions. The Treaty of Sevres in 1920, between the Sultan and the victorious Allies of World War I, dismantled the remnants of the Ottoman Empire and distributed its territories. Examination of the terms and consequences of the two treaties clearly establishes that a successful treaty must provide more than the absence of war.
