What Jay-Z is trying to say in his song is that in the beginning you have some desires but once you are capable of having what you desire you start wanting more and more and one day, you put up standards that are too high and you end up falling because you want too much. Moreover, he shows that even when he gets richer, you still are anchored to your roots (the streets) and that is why he uses term such as ‘’prostitute’’ and ‘’fuck’’ while speaking of art works like the Mona Lisa or artists like Pablo Picasso to represent a higher culture).

Indeed, Mona Lisa is incredibly mystifying but so is love. Even if you take two people that are in love, the way that they express love to each other is not the same. One of them could express it verbally, the other could express it by giving gifts, etc. Even the element that made them fall in love can be different. For one it can be the smile of the other person and for the other it can be the humour of the other person or his kindness, etc.

I think what Black Lips is trying to say in the song Modern Art, is that sometimes art is hard to understand. It can be confusing but also mind blowing sometimes. Art has the power to make you go through a wave of emotions and see things like you’ve never seen them before. Of course, in his song, he is also making a reference to drug and he’s asking himself whether it’s the drug that is making him feel weird of if it is what he is looking at.
