Jared Scot Fogle became known as the “The Subway Guy” in the year 2000. Fogle was able to lose two hundred and forty pounds and attributed it mostly to eating Subway. For fifteen years Fogle was a friendly face of the company (Levey, 2003). Jared not only lost weight but he gained wealth and notoriety. Gaining all of these things in a short time could have led to his demise at the same time. Today his friendly face of Subway is overshadowed by the fact he is a sex offender. He will be required to register as one until the day he dies. Not all individuals can handle drastic life-style changes, especially when these changes are both physical and mental. The forensic psychologist, John Bradford testified in Fogle’s defense. He claimed he suffered from a compulsive eating disorder years before losing weight. The psychologist also claimed Fogle replaced the …show more content…
In 2007 this reporter, Herman-Walrond took these comments seriously and immediately contacted Sarasota police. Walrond took things even further, and befriended Fogle. She also contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigations and agreed to be wire-tapped for four years when communicating with Fogle. If it was not for this reporter, Fogle could still be committing these sex crimes. On November 19, 2015 Jared Fogle took a guilty plea and was convicted of distribution and receipt of child porn, traveling to engage in illicit sex conduct with a minor. His criminal penalty was issued by Federal Judge Tanya Walton Pratt. Fogle was given fifteen years and eight months of federal prison with a thirteen-year minimum. He also has a lifetime of supervised release, a $175,000 fine, forfeiture of $50,000 and $1.4 million of restitution to be split among 14 victims. Fogle currently resides in the Federal Correctional Institution Englewood in Colorado. The earliest possible release is 2029 (Perez,
In Garrison Keillor’s short story “Don Giovanni'; the main character, Don Giovanni, is portrayed as a self centered, self serving, seducing womanizer. The story focuses on conversations held between “The Don'; and Figaro. In these conversations “The Don'; attempts to erode Figaro’s positive views on marriage. The attitude that “The Don'; has about women is negatively viewed by most societies, and it’s because of this attitude that he ends up at the fiery gates of hell!
The “NATIONAL BRIEFING; COLORADO” stated he could face 97 ½ years in prison if he was convicted of all charges he was facing at this point. Concluding, that Brucos’ charges were immense because of the crime he
In the event that a prisoner (particularly a sex offender) does complete rehabilitation, he carries with him a stigma upon reentering society. People often fear living near a prior drug addict or convicted murderer and the sensational media hype surrounding released felons can ruin a newly released convict’s life before it beings. What with resident notifications, media scare tactics and general concern for safety, a sex offender’s ability to readapt into society is severely hindered (554). This warrants life-skills rehabilitation applied to him useless, as he will be unable to even attempt to make the right decision regarding further crime opportunities.

Richard Speck is without a doubt what is considered a chronic offender having been arrested over 40 times prior to committing the crime for which he is best known; the 1966 murder, rape, and robbery of eight student nurses. His victims were female students between the ages of 19 and 24 who lived together on Chicago's South Side. Speck forced his way into their dorm at gunpoint, rounded the women up, and ordered them to empty their purses before tying them up. He then proceeded to brutalize them. The women were robbed, raped, beaten, and then strangled or stabbed to death (BIO, 2013). Cooper and Smith (2011), tell us that crimes of this nature involving 3 or more victims represent less than 1% of all homicides committed each year (p. 24) and crimes of this nature are more likely to be carried out by use of a gun (p. 27). Additionally, young adults aged 18-24 continue to experience the highest homicide rates, but homicides across the spectrum have fallen since the early 1990s (Cooper & Smith, 2011). Fang, French & McCollister (2010) estimated the cost to process a murder for our court systems was $390,352, the crime victim costs were $737,517, and the criminal’s activities other than the homici...

Jeffrey Dahmer was a serial killer active between 1978 and 1991, during which time he murdered 17 young men. His first crime took place when he was 18 and living with his family in Ohio. Just weeks after graduating high school, he picked up a hitchhiker and took him back to his parents’ house. When the man attempted to leave, Dahmer struck him in the head with a barbell and killed him. This first victim was dismembered and buried in the nearby woods. As Dahmer was driving with the body parts in black garbage bags in his backseat, he was pulled over for crossing the centerline. As the officer wrote the ticket, he asked what was in the bags. Dahmer said he was taking garbage to the dump, and the officer allowed him to go on his way (McGregor, 2005). It would be the first of many missed opportunities by law enforcement to stop Dahmer’s impending murder spree.
This paper explores three criminological theories as to why Jeffrey Dahmer committed his crimes. Although these approaches vary in terms of defining the cause of crime, one thing is certain, there is no single cause of crime; the crime is rooted in a diversity of causes and takes a variety of forms depending on the situation in which the crimes occur. However, the published articles vary in their definitions and uses of Criminological Theory. Rawlins (2005) suggest that the criminal phenomenon is too complex to be explained by a single theory. Other theories suggest differently and; therefore, have varying explanations. This paper examines the Psychological, Biochemical, and Social Process theories to slightly explain Jeffrey Dahmer’s actions.
Due to the stigma that has been placed on sex offenders, society wants to understand two things, who sex offenders really are and the characteristic of a possible sex offender. They often want to know, some identifying facts so that they can spot these people and protect family members and themselves. However, according to the Center for Sex Offender Management (CSOM) (n.d.), there has been research that suggests there is no concrete profile of a sex offender. Due to this criminal behavior, being so diverse and heterogeneous, individuals who commit these crimes cannot be identified with the statement “these crimes are all alike” (CSOM, n.d.). Griffin and West (2006) also suggested that a sex offender is anybody who commits a sexual assault. They suggested that this criminal behavior is more frequent in the white population (52 percent) with the average age of thirty-one years old. Most reported sexual assaults are also typically males (92.2 percent) above the age of eighteen, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) (n.d.)

Sex offenders have been a serious problem for our legal system at all levels, not to mention those who have been their victims. There are 43,000 inmates in prison for sexual offenses while each year in this country over 510,000 children are sexually assaulted(Oakes 99). The latter statistic, in its context, does not convey the severity of the situation. Each year 510,000 children have their childhood's destroyed, possibly on more than one occasion, and are faced with dealing with the assault for the rest of their lives. Sadly, many of those assaults are perpetrated by people who have already been through the correctional system only to victimize again. Sex offenders, as a class of criminals, are nine times more likely to repeat their crimes(Oakes 99). This presents a
Oftentimes, the world materializes itself into a whirlwind of unpredictable chaos that consumes all of whom try to work through it. These people find themselves wishing the specious ideal that, by some intervention, all control over the world would be theirs. In Michael Crichton’s The Great Train Robbery, a similar lust for ascendancy induces Edward Pierce to his criminal act of robbing the train. Due to his need for control, Edward Pierce manipulates the situation in his favor to show his influence over all obstacles, including the law itself.
Two of the sex offenders from the Worley study reported that during Halloween they are told by law enforcement to not answer the door or have outside lights on. Also, local television networks broadcast their picture to warn others of their sex offender status. This then leads to much embarrassment and shame, having their picture televised every year (Worley, R. M., & Worley, V. B., 2013). Today, anyone with Internet access can view and search the sex offender registries and this leads to the direct violation of privacy of these sex offenders. Not only are they tormented but their family members are as well. Their children are bullied at school and their spouses may be forced to quit their jobs (“US: Sex Offender Laws May Do More Harm Than Good,” 2007) As discussed earlier, the sex offender faces harassment and abuse constantly when they are placed on the sex offender
“According to Eric Hickey (Author of Serial Murderers and Their Victims), stress caused by childhood 'traumatizations' may be a trigger to criminal behavior in adulthood. It is important to understand that most people go through one or more of these traumatizations with no lifelong effects. However, in the future serial killer, the inability to cope with the stress involved with these trauma...
