Refining and extending on Erik Erikson’s work, James Marcia is another influential theorist who came up with four Identity Statuses of psychological identity development. Although Marcia’s theory originally conceptualized identity development in terms of a progressive developmental trend, his theory has subsequently become more descriptive and categorical, defining and identifying configurations of identity exploration and commitment (mentalhelp.net). Marcia's theory descriptively categorizes his four main points along the series of identity development. The points are identity diffusion, identity foreclosure, moratorium, and identity achievement. The first identity status, identity diffusion, describes youth who have not yet explored or committed to any single identity. Adolescents in this category, have not yet considered their identity at all, showing a low level of commitment and exploration, thus having to deal with situations or crisis as they arise. The second identity status is the identity foreclosure status. This identity status shows a low degree of exploration but a high degree of commitment. Youth, in this status, obtain their identity by committing to accepting the beliefs and values of their family, community, and culture and typically do not question why they are or aren’t doing something. The third identity status is called moratorium. This identity status represents a high degree of exploration but a low degree of commitment. At this status, youth have been prompted to explore and experiment with different values, beliefs, and goals because they are facing an identity “crisis”. They still have not made any final decisions about which beliefs and values are most important to them, so they are not yet committed to any one identity. Though the different identity statuses are in some sense progressive, Marcia's theory does assume that every adolescent will experience all four of the identity statuses; many may/will only experience one or two identity points during adolescence. Furthermore, there is no assumption that a youth's identity status is uniform across all aspects of their development, meaning they may change statuses as they mature and grow up. Youth may also identity in different statues across various areas of life such as home, work, religion, and politics; so, it is quite possible for youth to have more than one identity status at a time. Unlike Erickson's stage theory, Marcia's theory accounts for functioning movement between the various identity statuses. For example, youth who experience a traumatic event such as parental divorce, or a violent assault, may re-evaluate their understanding of the world and their value system because of their situation. During this stage, Erikson believes that the individual’s successful identity formation relies on social, cognitive and physical maturation (Pittman, Keiley, Kerpelman, & Vaughn, 2011). The individual tries out different roles for who they see in themselves and who they portray to others, eventually committing to their own personal role and occupational choice. Pittman et al. Identity is an unbound formation which is created by racial construction and gender construction within an individual’s society even though it is often seen as a controlled piece of oneself. In Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum’s piece, “The Complexity of Identity: ‘Who Am I?’, Tatum asserts that identity is formed by “individual characteristics, family dynamics, historical factors, and social and political contexts” (Tatum 105). Life is never easy for anyone, however it is particularly harder during the time of adolescence. The period in which the person is no longer considered a child, but not quite an adult. Erik Erikson had many ideas about this period, and he focuses on the term identity diffusion. Rebecca Fraser-Thill describes this when she writes: “Identity diffusion is one step in the process of finding a sense of self. It refers to a period when an individual does not have an established identity, nor is actively searching for one. In other words, it's a time when a person's identity remains unresolved, yet there is no identity crisis (called an identity moratorium).” (Fraser-Thill, 2011) Erikson was able to carefully acknowledge the intrinsic components of the concept of identity diffusion. Biological influences combined with societal and social expectations contribute to how well people learn to adapt to their environments (2013). According to Erikson, there are eight stages of development. Within these states, there are different psychological, emotional and cognitive tasks. In order to adjust, individuals must learn to develop these tasks. During adolescence, Erikson states that each person needs to navigate through the development task of ‘‘Identity vs. Identity confusion ’’ (2013). He defined this task by stating that adolescent children must learn to develop a sense of self and establish independence. Prior to this stage of development, a person’s parents largely influence their identity. In this stage the adolescent children begin to explore and develop their identity outside of their parents’ influence (Hill, Bromell, Tyson, & Flint, 2007). Adolescents are generally more egocentric at this stage and have an increased sense of self-consciousness. They also have a strong desire to conform to peer influence and develop concerns regarding their appearance. They develop concern about their level of competence in relation to their peer group as well. As peer influence increases, during this stage, parental influence decreases (Ashford & LeCroy, 2013; Hill et. al, 2007). Conflict generally increases between parent and child at this stage of development (2007).
The fifth stage, according to Erik Erikson psychoanalytic theory of development is the Identity Vs Identity confusion. The stage occurs during adolescence in the ages between 12 to 18 years. At this stage, the adolescents try to find a sense of personal and self-identity by intensely exploring their personal goals, beliefs, and values (McLeod, 2017).
