This paper briefly describes experiences in my life that have had a big part in shaping who I am today. I will also be connecting psychology theories with these life changing events. It was during this time that I received the news that my papa was diagnosed with brain cancer.. I remember how we had to be strong as a family to help my each other go through a battle. This made my view about my family change. Thanks to this event, I became closer than ever with my family. Three months before he died, he told me he wouldn’t be around much longer. At first I was miserable. I remember just think it was all a dream and I believing that he wouldn 't die. I cried when I learned that he didn’t have long to live. An example of this that happen was October 31, 2014. It was my senior year of high school. I just got done playing in a football game and it was time to celebrate after our win. I had got home late that night. As soon as I walk in my phone rings. It was my girlfriends brother telling me there had been an accident. CBT adopts a perspective on learned behavior, whereas unhealthy behaviors can be learned and un-learned and then substituted for more healthy behaviors. This form of therapy does not assume that people are innately flawed, rather their environment and behaviors modeled by others teach them how to behave. Another important aspect of CBT is that thoughts and beliefs influence behavior. Social scientist and their theories such as Pavlov’s classical conditioning and Skinner’s operant conditioning contributed to the make-up of the CBT. Classical conditioning explains human behavior as a response to repeated stimuli. In relevance to Mrs. Kay’s case, the crying behaviors and feelings of helplessness are classically condition. In regards to operant conditioning, human behavior is contingent on reinforcements. A reward or positive reinforcement for a particular behavior encourages the behavior to continue and/or improve. In contrast, discipline or negative reinforcement of a behavior discourages the behavior from continuing, as well as allows the person to avoid unwanted or uncomfortable experiences. Both positive and negative reinforcements can lead a person to continuing the behavior that will give them the reinforcement that they desire. Happiness, sadness, anger, and excitement are emotions people have felt at least once in their lives. The question about why people feel emotions is a debated topic among psychologists for a while as there are many debates on what emotions are. There are three major theories that have been developed over the last one hundred years: the Facial Feedback Theory, the James-Lange Theory, and the Cannon-Bard Theory. I chose Behaviorism over the other aspects because I believe behavior determines human personality and is very interesting. You can tell what one is by his behavior, and one behaves according to what place he has in society. By doing this paper on Behavior, I hope to get a better understanding of, if behavior develops a personality or if personality guides behavior. I also see behaviorism helping me in the future with my personal and professional career by understanding human personality and behavior better than I do. This person could be your employee or your employer. Behavior Therapy Behavior therapy is the application of experimentally derived principles of learning to the treatment of psychological disorders. The concept derives primarily from work of Russian psychologist Ivan Pavlov. Behavior-therapy techniques differ from psychiatric methods, particularly psychoanalysis, in that they are predominately symptom (behavior) oriented and shows little or no concern for unconscious processes, achieving new insight, or effecting fundamental personality change. The U.S. psychologist B.F. Skinner, who worked with mental patients in a Massachusetts State hospital, popularized behavior therapy. From his work in animal learning, Skinner found that the establishment and extinction of responses can be determined by the way reinforces, or rewards, are given. The pattern of reward giving, both in time and frequency, is known as a schedule of reinforcement. The gradual change in behavior in approximation of the desired result is known as shaping. More recent developments in behavior therapy emphasize the adaptive nature of cognitive processes. The thought process that drives the psychodynamic theory is that our histories greatly influence the people we turn out to be. Each person is made an individual due to the different experiences in life. Your daily life constantly bombards you with stimulus that shapes you and your personality. In this paper, I will be discussing what psychological influences have affected me. This will include my childhood and how it made effects me today, the psychological personalities I currently have, and what changes I’d like to make for the future.
Another one of Aristotle’s philosophy was regarding the emotion and selective perception that summarized by B.R. Hergenhahn in History of Psychology’s text book (p.56- 57). Aristotle brought the awareness on emotion when he proposed that without emotion, humans could be missing on what is relevant (S.Nancy, 1989). He suggested that emotions influenced and intensified one’s behavior. For instance, people who are afraid tend to run faster after being threatened by a snake as compared to leisurely jogging. When people are angered they have a tendency to pick a fight because emotion can drive one’s motive of action. Two years and four months ago I died. A terrible condition struck me, and I was unable to do anything about it. In a matter of less than a year, it crushed down all of my hopes and dreams. This condition was the death of my mother. Even today, when I talk about it, I burst into tears because I feel as though it was yesterday. I desperately tried to forget, and that meant living in denial about what had happened. I never wanted to speak about it whenever anyone would ask me how I felt. To lose my Mom meant losing my life. I felt I died with her. Many times I wished I had given up, but I knew it would break the promise we made years before she passed away. Therefore, I came back from the dead determined and more spirited than before.
Everyone has milestone days in his/her life that change the direction of his/her life for better or worse. Let me tell you one of my experiences that I will never forget from when I was 12 years old.
