In the 1960’s segregation was a problem for people all over America. There were many people all over the country who helped the cause of freedom for all the non-white people. These people were successful at their goal and are regarded as heroes today. James farmer was a young boy who lived in a small town. At the age of three or four he was walking with his mother and he saw a corner store. He asked his mother to buy a Coca Cola and she responded by saying that they could not. The young James farmer was confused because he had just watch a boy his age go inside and buy a coca cola. He walked home with his mother and he asked why. She started to cry and that was when James decided to end segregation. Over ten years later James decided to make
a protesting group called the freedom riders. He and other people would sit in the wrong color area of the public buses. This was in order to get the sections removed. They risked their lives as one bus was firebombed by the Ku Klux Klan. Another huge activist who even has his own day honoring him is Martin Luther King Jr. He was a civil rights activists known for his peaceful protests and his speeches. He was such a controversial activist as at the time of his protesting but he was dedicated to get equal rights for all Americans. He knew he was going to be killed for what he did but he did it anyway. He was one of the big six who performed the march on Washington, the protest for equal rights for people of all nationalities. Martin luther king was killed on April 4th, 1968. The news was saddening but it was not the end of the civil rights movement as they had not made the segregation of nonwhite American citizens. The rallies did not stop. They kept going as the people wanted rights. In a town called Birmingham the Mayor Bull Connor, had the police and firemen take out the dogs and the firehoses. This caused the rest of America to realize that racism was wrong. In 1968, the Civil rights act was passed. It deemed that public places could not be segregated.
The book, “My Soul Is Rested” by Howell Raines is a remarkable history of the civil rights movement. It details the story of sacrifice and audacity that led to the changes needed. The book described many immeasurable moments of the leaders that drove the civil rights movement. This book is a wonderful compilation of first-hand accounts of the struggles to desegregate the American South from 1955 through 1968. The book has become one of the most influential of its time earning the praise of great figures in Twentieth Century American History. It is a book that holds up to its weighty praise of being “the historical Bible of the civil rights movement.” The book is present in a light that is free from petty bias and that is shaped by a clear point of view that considers all facts equally. It is a book that will remain one of the best explanations of this time period.
Blacks were treated unjustly due to the Jim Crow laws and the racial stigmas embedded into American society. Under these laws, whites and colored people were “separate but equal,” however this could not be further from the truth. Due to the extreme racism in the United States during this time period, especially in the South, many blacks were dehumanized by whites to ensure that they remained inferior to them. As a result of their suffering from the prejudice society of America, there was a national outcry to better the lives of colored people.
Segregation is the act of setting someone apart from other people mainly between the different racial groups without there being a good reason. The African American’s had different privileges than the white people had. They had to do many of their daily activities separated from the white people. In A Lesson Before Dying there were many examples of segregation including that the African American’s had a different courthouse, jail, church, movie theater, Catholic and public school, department stores, bank, dentist, and doctor than the white people. The African American’s stayed downtown and the white people remained uptown. The white people also had nicer and newer building and attractions than the African American’s did. They had newer books and learning tools compared to the African American’s that had books that were falling apart and missing pages and limited amount of supplies for their students. The African American’s were treated as if they were lesser than the white people and they had to hold doors and let them go ahead of them to show that they knew that they were not equal to them and did not have the same rights or privileges as they did just because of their race. In the past 60 years, the unstable frame in which the world was built, began to truly change by commencing to form into a world where every individual will one day be accepted for who they are no matter their race or colour. The belief that white people were better than others had been accepted in imperialist nations for generations. Although, some inspirational individuals who have opposed suprematism, their values and beliefs differed from the majority but still voiced it, they rose up and fought for equality for all human beings. Although worldwide equality and freedom has not yet been established much has been achieved and credited to freedom fighters in the 1960’s. Mary Mebane used her own experience on the bus to show how segregation affected her life. Mary Mebane points out, white people “could sit anywhere they choose, even in the colored section. Only the black passengers had to obey segregation laws.” When Mebane was young, she saw a conflict on the bus. The driver asked a black person who sat in the ‘no-man’s-land’ to move back to colored section to give the seat for the white person who was standing on the bus because the bus was full. Segregation on the bus represented how white people unequally treat black people. When black people refused this driver to move, the driver try to send them to police. Black people were living in the shadow of racism and segregation at that time. However, that situation still affects school system and community now. Mebane asserts, “It was a world without option.” Black people have lower economic and social status because they are restricted to a small box because of segregation. “In Six Decades After Brown Ruling, in US Schools Still Segregated”, Dexter Mullins claims that in some schools like Valley West Elementary School in Houston, about 90% of people are not white people. These kinds of schools do not have enough funds to support adequate school resource to these students, and these students have lower opportunities to contact with cultural diversity. If you grew up in the 60s’, it was a time where major protest groups began to appear all over the place with one protest or another against things like the war, women’s rights, school protests, etc. But in the 60s, there was one of these groups that want to fight for equity and that group was the civil rights group. Therefore, even though the civil rights group began in the 50’s it did not really come into the forefront until the 1960s, where they emerged and greatly expanded in the 1960s. This group was the first movement group of the 1960s-era social movements. This movement was also responsible for producing one of the most significant American social activists every of the 20th century, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The 1960’s was a time period in which produced a plethora of social movements were taking place and consequently, laws were changed that affected our society as a whole. Some of those social movements were the Women Rights and Gay Rights movements, which were directly influenced by the Civil Rights Movement. The Civil Rights Movement produced many leaders, two of whom are Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X (El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz). King’s call for little black children to play with little white children, his admonishment of a black revolution due to the detrimental effects it would have on black and white relations, and his support of white and black children receiving the same education, directly shows that he supported a united effort to tackle discrimination. Consequently, during the 1960’s racial, political, and socioeconomic divisions were abundant and only through inclusion of all people to promote unity could society become better. Therefore, Martin Luther King Jr.’s philosophy made the most sense for the 1960’s because he promoted the inclusion of people from all backgrounds to produce harmonious living within our society.
The justice system in the 1960's was pretty harsh compared to today. The system back then was unjust and in a way, racist. Martin Luther King Jr Responds to just one act of criticism simply explaining what is right. King uses hyperbole and metaphor to convince the clergymen that segregation is wrong and that peace needs to be made between blacks and whites.
Before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, segregation in the United States was commonly practiced in many of the Southern and Border States. This segregation while supposed to be separate but equal, was hardly that. Blacks in the South were discriminated against repeatedly while laws did nothing to protect their individual rights. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 ridded the nation of this legal segregation and cleared a path towards equality and integration. The passage of this Act, while forever altering the relationship between blacks and whites, remains as one of history’s greatest political battles.
Although slavery has ended, segregation still has a lasting effect on American society. There are still African-Americans being mistreated in parts of the country, some people cannot get jobs and in recent time some people will not sell land to blacks.
