People act differently in society, but act how they normally would when there are no longer any rules or supervision. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the story revolves around a group of children who are “without warning” find themselves alone in an isolated island without any adult with them after their plane delinquency. Ralph was the first arrival to the nearby forest area, and met with another boy wearing glasses named Piggy. Ralph is a strong and confident boy waving in his eyes and starting activity while Piggy is a shy, not good looking boy that sounds very intelligent. When the boys on the island choose Ralph as their chief over Jack, Jack got jealous and mad because he thinks that he is the strongest therefore he should be the leader. Jack proves this by saying “he’s like Piggy. He says things like Piggy. He isn’t a proper chief.”(138 Lord of the flies). Jack thinks he should be the leader because he can hunt and he says that Ralph is just like Piggy and what he means by that is he is weak and cannot handle being the leader just like Piggy, who is always bullied by the other boys because of how he looks like. In my opinion, Jealousy is a major theme in Lord of the Flies and it is what drives Jack to all his savagery and evil actions. Jack decides not to stay with Ralph’s group and to make a new tribe he says, “I’m going off by myself. He can catch his own pigs. Anyone who wants to hunt when I do can come too.” (140 Lord of the Flies) again, Jack here proves that he an arrogant character that refuses to be told what to do by anyone. Throughout the novel Jack is always trying to prove himself as a better leader, he even says, “I ought to be chief. Because I’m chapter chorister and head boy”. (18 Lord of the Flies).
