The sports hero I chose is Jack Nicklaus, one of the most iconic golf icons in the golf world. Jack was born January 21, 1940 in Columbus, Ohio. At age 10 he started playing golf and was shot a 51 on his first nine holes, which is what the average golfer shoots. However, when you are 10 years old shooting a 51 on your first round ever is extremely impressive, this will let his father know his son has a gift in the sport of golf. Jack was able to get golf lessons by a Sccioto club pro Jack Grout, and won the Ohio Open at age 16 and a year later won the International Jayce Junior Golf Tournament. The next chapter of the soon to be legend would be when he got accepted at Ohio State University, where he would win the U.S. Amateur title in 1959 …show more content…
In November, 1961 Jack Nicklaus would turn professional and change the game of golf forever. It did not take long for Jack to surface and become one of the most prevailing golfers on the PGA Tour. Jack wasn’t good in just one area of the sport but he was an all around amazing golfer, from his powerful drivers at the tee box, finessed touch chipping the ball and impenetrable nerves being able to sink clutch putts anywhere on the green. In 1962 he was able to win his first U.S. Open title, this time beating Arnold Palmer in a playoff hole after tying through 18, which would start a rivalry in the sport between the two greats. The clutch win by the 22-year-old signaled the arrival of the greatest golfer in the history of the game. After this win Jack Nicklaus would not get the praise you think he would have gotten. Instead they called him “Fat Jack” and quickly became a villain on the PGA Tour. This was because Arnold Palmer was considered the undisputed king of golf before Nicklaus came into the game. Arnold Palmer was adored by pretty much everyone is the golf community and even called the people’s hero. Even though they were considered rivals, this was only because they were indisputably the two best golfers in the 1960’s. This wasn’t a rivalry like Odell Beckham Jr. and Josh Norman, they had a tremendous amount of respect for one another. Arnold was embarrassed on how his fans treated …show more content…
In 1970 he would overcome a 2 shot deficit after 54 holes and win The Open Championship in a playoff hole against Doug Sanders. The following year Nicklaus would win at the PGA Championship giving him his 9th major victory, tying Ben Hogan for the most major wins of any golfer in the Masters era. Of coarse in 1972 The Golden Bear would win the Masters giving him his 10th, making him have the record for the most Major wins of any golfer in the Masters era. That same year he would go on to win his third U.S. Open and push his Major victories to eleven, this time surpassing Bobby Jones’s career record of 10 Major titles, setting a record for most Major wins of any golfer. 1974 Jack Nicklaus would be elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame, while still playing in the PGA. Just when you thought he couldn’t top winning seven Major’s in a decade (1960’s) he kept proving his dominance in the 70’s and won an impressive eight Major Championships. In the 1980’s, 19 years after getting his PGA card Jack would slowly become less dominant in the sport with the young talent coming in. Although he went on to win the U.S. Open and PGA Championship that year, he could no longer keep his supremacy. His last Major win would be in the 1986 Master where he beat Greg Norman by one stroke. Jack still couldn’t keep golf out of his
Wayne Gretzky was a leader, and although his character as a person cannot be measured by mere statistics, he sure has some outstanding ones. However, this definitely was not the last award Gretzky would receive.
In 1983, at the age of twenty-three, Cal lead the Orioles to a World Series victory. He always seemed the favorite every group would vote for as player of the year. There were two reasons. First was his outstanding performance on the field. Second was the way Cal handled himself off the field. He loves being a role model for children, so he tries to be the best person he can in order to set a good example.

6AM. A young man wakes up, showers, and eats breakfast. He then continues to his bedroom, embellishing himself in the simple yet characteristic mixture of white and khaki. He continues to his place of employment, breathing the soft scent of elm and grass. Within the caddie must lay the characteristics of a well-rounded, young adult, embodying the work ethic of those most inspiring before him. Charles “Chick” Evans, who once was a caddy and worldly renowned golfer, appreciates the fine young adults that have endured the morning wakeup call everyday in the summer. To whom that are applicable can ultimately be awarded the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship. Named after Chick Evans himself because he dropped out of college in 1912 for lack of money, the scholarship is funded by donations from golfers and the proceeds of an annual professional tournament (Spears, 1995). Although Chick Evans has passed away many years ago, his legacy still lives on through the 825 scholars currently enrolled in 19 universities all across the United States. Chick Evans has made a profound have impact on the golf community and caddies looking for a way to pay for college.
The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson Ask someone who was one of the first people to break the color barrier in sports and you're almost guaranteed that the answer is Jackie Robinson. Yet almost 40 years earlier there was a black boxer by the name of Jack Johnson, also known as John Arthur Johnson. Most would argue that he was the best heavyweight boxer of his time, having a career record of 79 wins and 8 losses, and being the first black to be the Heavyweight champion of the World. (Jack Johnson (boxer), October 9th, 2006.) Not only was this impressive, but he had to deal with racism and black oppression.
He was later inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1962. Jackie Robinson should not only be recognized for his on-field accomplishments, but for what it took for him to get there as well. Throughout all of the racism in America and baseball, he endured it and pushed through it to set himself up for ultimate success. He endured the hardships of being the only African-American in the league at the time and taking all the hate from the racists, while still putting up remarkable numbers. Even as a white man during the time of integration in baseball, you could have nothing but respect for Jackie Robinson.
In 1955 he won his first big tournament, the Canadian Open, earning $2,400 as the top prize. He continued to add wins over the next few years, winning three in 1956 and then adding four more victories in 1957. But he would have to wait for the major that he wanted until the 1958 Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia. A victory in this tournament gets your name in golf's book of legends, but Palmer was just getting
The argument to this is that if these men can make it into the Hall of Fame why is Pete Rose banned. It is obvious that these players made it there with just their playing abilities and not by all of the other characteristics needed to be inducted into the Hall of Fame (Maury). Pete Rose started playing professional baseball in 1960 in the minor leagues and by 1963 he reached the Major Leagues as a rookie second baseman with the National League’s Cincinnati Reds. Rose won the National League’s Rookie of the Year Award for 1963. He spent most of his 24 year career playing with the Reds, Rose also played with the Phillies and the Expos. In 1985 Rose broke one of the most “unbreakable” records of all time, by passing out Ty Cobb for the most career hits ever (Sports Illustrated.). Rose holds many records, some of which are: most games played, most at bats, and mos...
Golf is a sport of fun shots, and frustration shots. One of the best players ever to play the sport was Jack Nicklaus. Nicklaus had many accomplishments in golf and even though I will not mention all of his accomplishments I will mention some of the most important. Jack won six Masters Tournaments, the Masters is the biggest golf tournament of the whole year, and he won his sixth Masters at the age of forty-six! He won seventy-three PGA tour wins and eighteen majors, meaning that he won either the U.S. open, the Open Championship, the Masters Tournament, or the PGA Championship eighteen times! Jack even won PGA tour player of the year five times! Jack’s accomplishments are very good but we have to start at the beginning.
Along with Henry Ford and Charles Lindbergh, there were many other heros of the time. The main hereos came from the sports of the time. There were many sports heroes in the 1920's, such as George Herman Ruth, Jack Dempsey, Johnny Weismuller, Steve Donoghue, Harold Edward Grange, Helen Newington Wills, and William Tilden. George Herman Ruth, later dubbed Babe Ruth from his fans, set the baseball record of sixty home runs in one season in 1927.
...rican American to hold the World Heavy Weight Championship. The American Dream is now accessible to anyone who has the drive to achieve it through hard work and motivation to jump obstacles in the path of the set goals. Jack Johnson achieved his dream despite of all the opposition, criticism, all the stereotypes, racism and all the other tough fights life threw at him and hence, paved a way for equality amongst the races in the future.
...ing two similar ones from Babe Ruth and Jimmie Foxx for being the youngest player to hit 500 home runs and then later 600 home runs. He is a phenomenal player but unfortunately again there will always be a question of whether this was because of his talent after several years or if his records should be more attributed to the drugs.
Jackie Robinson had a lot more struggles than you would he would in baseball career. When he went in to play baseball almost all the fans cursed and booed at him. Even his own team signed a petition to get rid of him (that’s just messed up). The fans threatened him. Other players tried to hurt him. He had a really rough
When asked who their hero is, most people respond with the name of an athlete or an actress/actor. When asked who my hero is I would have to respond with a simple three letter word: mom. My mother has been the greatest inspiration in my life and is the main reason that I am where I am and who I am today.
