Lord of The Flies by William Golding is a story about a group of kids of 12 – 6 who got stuck on an island and had to fend for and govern themselves. I will be analyzing jack, a boy of 12 years with a tall skinny build, red hair, blue eyes, and a freckled face. From the beginning jack wanted to be the leader of the boys on the island, but since ralph was elected the leader he had to follow ralphs orders. Jack was constantly rebelling against ralph and as the story moves on jack breaks off from ralph and forms his own tribe from people that didn’t want to work. Once his tribe was built he became a strict and cruel leader. throughout his journey to become the leader of the boys on the island jack demonstrates his leadership, courageousness, and …show more content…
capacity for cruelty. From the beginning of the story jack demonstrated that he is courageous.
For example, when ralph (leader of the kids stuck on the island) was assigning tasks to the other kid’s jack said that he and his choir boys would be the hunters and that “if there was a beast that they’d hunt and kill it”. later in the story he demonstrated his courage by going into the cave with ralph were they thought the beast was living in order to kill it and end the threat it posed. Another example of jack being brave is when he and most others after breaking off from ralph the elected chief and siding with jack the unofficial second chief decided to go up the mountain to look for the beast when it was already starting to get dark. Jacks courage and bravery helped him survive his time on the island and establish himself as one of the leaders of the …show more content…
group. Becoming one of the leaders of the group was easy for jack. From the first gathering jack commanded respect with the way he led his choir in two lines side by side through some bushes and into the gathering. Once they reached the gathering “jack shouted an order and they halted”. (20) He later shouted another order “choir! stand still!” (20) Just like that he was controlling the choir. It takes strong mind to function so well after a plane crash and a firm hand to then have to keep others in line while journeying in uncharted territory. Later in the story when jack is tired of the way ralph is running things he splits off and form his own tribe. By doing things that the kids wanted not what they needed to do he was able to win over almost all of ralphs group and turn them into his subordinates. By doing this he becomes the ruler of the tribe. However, in order to keep a hold on his tribe, he dishes out harsh punishments on those that disobey or oppose him. For example, sammeric a pair of little boys of a very young age side with ralph. When they were captured they were hurt and forced to join jack and his tribe. You see this when sammeric says “they made us. They hurt us.” The previous example shows my next point, that jack is cruel.
From when jack first met piggy he immediately targeted him. Whenever piggy would try to speak jack would say something mean to him in order to put him down. For example, at one of the meetings in the first half of the story piggy was trying to calm the littleins and jack said “shut up you fat slug” (91) to piggy. Jack has been repeatedly mean to piggy ever since they first met. He wasn’t only mean to piggy though; jack was mean to anyone he didn’t like or felt were in his way. For example, when the littleuns were freaking out about the beastie and were having nightmares, jack told said “it serves you right if something did get you” and “you useless lot of crybabies. (83) Jack repeatedly demonstrates his cruelty, and it eventually becomes so bad he’s brutally hurting other kids to force them into his tribe. Samneric were two that had this brutality brought upon them. When they were captured jack began jabbing Samneric in the ribs with his spear. Even when they cried out he didn’t stop. Jack is a very twisted boy with barley any morals and who has no problem with hurting others to get them into
line. As the story progresses jack forms his own tribe and in doing so shows his capability for leadership, cruelty, and courageousness. From the beginning of the book jack was a bully but by the end he became a cruel and irresponsible dictator. In the end ralph lost all his power, jack became the leader of the boys, and the struggle for power was meaningless, because they were rescued by the navy.
After being marooned on an unknown, uninhabited island and desperate to survive, the characters in William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies are pushed to the limits of their humanity, and no one is safe from the atrocities from within, not even the seemingly innocent littluns. In an environment where civilization does not exist, the boys of the story attempt to form a society among themselves. Among the group of boys is a young boy who stands out from the rest. Jack Merridew, the leader of the choir boys, strives to take the role of leader of the boys, and he appears to be completely competent. In the beginning, Jack seems to be innocent and civilized. Jack is the cultured leader of the boys’ choir. Although the reader’s first impression of Jack Merridew may be one of an innocent leader eager to be rescued, his true, truculent nature manifests with the development of the novel, and the reader is gripped by Jack’s true schismatic, belligerent, and iconoclastic nature.
The Lord of the Flies by William Golding is a peculiar story about boys stranded on an island, and the plot and characters relate to many prevailing events and problems. A specific problem that is currently occurring is the mutual hatred and enmity between North Korea and South Korea. This is a current event, but the North and South’s hostility has been ongoing since 1945, when Korea was split into North and South, Communist and Capitalist. When the 38th parallel(Border between North and South Korea) was created, Kim Il-Sung ruled the North, and Syngman Rhee ruled the South. As of now, a power hungry dictator, Kim Jong-un rules the north, and an optimistic president who wants to see change was recently elected in the South, named Moon Jae-in. In Golding’s book, Ralph is a character who aimed to keep everyone alive and to stay together. Jack on the other hand, wanted to have fun and hunt, and although he also wanted to be rescued, he made no effort to help. In this sense, North Korea is a clear representation of the character Jack and his quest for power, and opposingly, South Korea is a representation of Ralph and his strive for order, democracy, and civilization.
The novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding is about a group of boys that were on a plane crash in the 1940’s in a nuclear War. The plane is shot down and lands on a tropical island. Some boys try to function as a whole group but see obstacles as time goes on. The novel is about civilization and social order. There are three older boys, Ralph, Jack, and Piggy, that have an effect on the group of younger boys. The Main character Ralph, changes throughout the novel because of his role of leadership and responsibility, which shapes him into a more strict but caring character as the group becomes more uncivilized and savage
Lord of the Flies by William Golding is a novel that represents a microcosm of society in a tale about children stranded on an island. Of the group of young boys there are two who want to lead for the duration of their stay, Jack and Ralph. Through the opposing characters of Jack and Ralph, Golding reveals the gradual process from democracy to dictatorship from Ralph's democratic election to his lack of law enforcement to Jack's strict rule and his violent law enforcement.
Jack, on the other hand, is doing nothing but causing chaos. Jack fails to realize that the boys need security, stability, and order on the island. Jack was a leader of the choir before the boys landed on the island. These boys, who were in the choir, still want to follow Jack; however, they have no discipline at all. The only thing that is on Jack’s mind is hunting.
William Golding’s novel ‘The Lord of The Flies’ tells the story of a group of English boys isolated on a desert island, left to attempt to retain civilisation. In the novel, Golding shows one of the boys, Jack, to change significantly. At the beginning of the book, Jack’s character desires power and although he does not immediately get it, he retains the values of civilized behaviour. However, as the story proceeds, his character becomes more savage, leaving behind the values of society. Jack uses fear of the beast to control the other boys and he changes to become the book’s representation of savagery, violence and domination. He is first taken over with an obsession to hunt, which leads to a change in his physical appearance This change of character is significant as he leads the other boys into savagery, representing Golding’s views of there being a bad and unforgiving nature to every human.
From the beginning of the novel Jack intimidates the other boys with his flaming red hair, his long black cape, and the brutal way he shouts orders to his choir. Although he is not a good-looking boy, he is amazingly arrogant. He always has to look good in people's eyes. Not that he cares if people like him, but more that they respect him. The only way he knows how to gain people's admiration is by getting them to fear him. He spots Piggy as an easy target and immediately starts to humiliate him in front of the others: "You're talking too much," said Jack Merridew. "Shut up, Fatty."(21) He sizes up Piggy right from the beginning knowing that Piggy wouldn't stand up to him and by making fun of him he was letting the other boys know that he not one to be messed with. When he feels that people are about to think him to be weak or gutless, he uses his knife as if it were a symbol of his superiority: "Jack slammed his knife into a trunk and looked round challengingly"(33). His knife gives him power, a weapon that he would use against anyone who dares to mock him.
Lord of the Flies is a novel written by William Golding in 1954 about a group of young British boys who have been stranded alone together on an island with no adults. During the novel the diverse group of boys struggle to create structure within a society that they constructed by themselves. Golding uses many unique literary devices including characterization, imagery, symbolism and many more. The three main characters, Ralph, Piggy, and Jack are each representative of the three main literary devices, ethos, logos, and pathos. Beyond the characterization the novel stands out because of Golding’s dramatic use of objective symbolism, throughout the novel he uses symbols like the conch, fire, and Piggy’s glasses to represent how power has evolved and to show how civilized or uncivilized the boys are acting. It is almost inarguable that the entire novel is one big allegory in itself, the way that Golding portrays the development of savagery among the boys is a clear representation of how society was changing during the time the novel was published. Golding is writing during
My Essay is about Ralph and and his Motivation’s and did he contribute to the tragedy in any way. Also about if he prevented any of the deaths and what would I have done differently in his situation. I defend Ralph’s actions as leader, He had tried his best but everyone fell apart. Did Ralph contribute to the tragedies? Ralph had tried his best but he was struggling at handling the problems on the island, He was unaware of the boy’s and what was going on. He had tried to contribute to all of the tragedies but there was too much going on around him it was just hard. What was wrong with Ralph too was that jack ignores everything and try’s to do his own thing the whole time instead of working together with everyone. All Jack wants is his way or his way to him there is no other way. So yes Ralph had try to contribute to the tragedies but Jack and other boys had just did what they wanted to do instead of doing what they should have done. So Ralph had really struggled dealing with everybody. In my opinion Ralph was doing a good job, Yes he kind of gave up for a little b...
Throughout William Golding's novel Lord of the Flies there is an ever-present conflict between two characters. Ralph's character combines common sense with a strong desire for civilized life. Jack, however, is an antagonist with savage instincts, which he cannot control. Ralph's goals to achieve a team unit with organization are destroyed by Jack's actions and words that are openly displayed to the boys. The two leaders try to convince the boys that their way of survival is correct.
How are the characters of Ralph, Jack and Piggy established in the opening chapters of the novel Lord of the Flies At the start of the novel we learn that during a nuclear war, there was an atomic explosion. Many boys were evacuated on an aircraft with a detachable passenger tube. They were flying over tropical seas via Gibraltar and Addis Ababa when the tube was released and crashed-landed in the jungle of an island. The aircraft flew off in flames and overnight the remains of the tube were swept out to sea in a storm.
This shows how he is a good person and an excellent leader because, everybody on the island knows, that Jack is the only person who has the confidence and ability to kill animals. ” ‘Listen all of you. Me and my hunters, we’re living along the beach by a flat rock. We hunt and feast and have fun. If you want to join my tribe come and see us. Perhaps I’ll let you join. Perhaps not.’ “. (140) Without Jack, they will not have food and the children know they need that, but Piggy and Ralph could not provide that for them. Therefore, they had to leave them.
On the dystopian island of Lord of the Flies, authored by William Golding, one can observe the boy's’ descent into madness. When a group of young children were abandoned on an island without adult supervision, chaos rampaged. This loss civility is most clearly demonstrated by Jack and his effect on others. The text illustrates how quickly he succumbed to the savagery, the way his thirst for power and his dire situation brought him to barbarity, and how the boys followed suit, losing all their humanity.
In summation, Jack Merridew’s desire for authority, power and violence overcame his knowledge of civilization throughout William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies. Jack’s transformations were built off of his lack of civilization, primitive acts and ruthlessness towards others. Jack represented a dictatorship and evil on the island. Jack’s behavior changes were not for the better, but for the worst, bringing out the worst in him, as well as the other boys.
According to Golding, “Ralph made a step toward Jack and smacked Piggy’s head. Piggy's glasses flew off and tinker on the rocks" (71). This is a very significant part of this story. This is when piggy and jack collide with anger. From this point forward, Piggy wants nothing to do with Jack.
