Jack London Jack London was born on January 12, 1876. During his life he was a pioneer in the world of commercial magazine fiction, as well as one of the first writers to become a worldwide celebrity. He was also a social activist and was an innovator in the science fiction genre. One of his most famous works is the short story, To Build a Fire. The story tells the story of an unnamed man traveling the bitter cold Klondike along with his dog. To Build a Fire offers an easily comprehensible story with many compelling themes, in addition to realistic and vivid imagery. To exemplify this, the story was very linear with an extremely small amount of characters. The plot was very simple and only took place in a days span. It simply followed a man traveling down the Yukon and showed the challenges that nature presented to him. There were only two main characters of the story, which were the man and the dog. Others characters were briefly mentioned, but they were never assigned their own names. This allowed for it to be very easy to keep track of all the characters in the story. For instance, in the text it states, “As he turned to go on, he spat speculatively. There was a sharp, explosive crackle that startled him. He spat again. And again, in the air, before it could fall to the snow, the spittle crackled. He knew that at fifty below spittle crackled on the snow, but this spittle had crackled in the air. Undoubtedly it was colder than fifty below.” This gives a great visualisation of how cold it was. Every reader will be able to visualize the spit crackling before it hits the ground. The readers will be put in the shoes of a man about to freeze to death. Because of imagery like this, the story and the challenges the man faces become very life
