Robert Oppenheimer as he observed the detonation of trinity in New Mexico.Trinity was the code name for the first detonation of a nuclear bomb. The test was a success and is widely contributed to the leadership of J. Robert Oppenheimer. This success lead to Oppenheimer being called the “father of the atomic bomb.” Oppenheimer was put in charge of the Manhattan Project, which was the project that eventually lead to the creation of the trinity bomb, in Los Alamos, New Mexico. J Robert Oppenheimer’s intelligence has lead to the creation of the most infamous bomb in the world.
Julius Robert Oppenheimer’s early life, unlike the majority of people’s childhood, was
dedicated to education. His family was apart of the Ethical Culture Society which placed emphasis on social justice, civic responsibility, and secular humanism. Dr. Adler also founded the Ethical Culture School, where Oppenheimer enrolled in September 1911. Oppenheimer at age 10 was studying physics, chemistry, and minerals. He was so involved in the New York Mineralogical Club that they invited him as a guest speaker, little did they know he was only 12 years old. J. Robert Oppenheimer graduated high school as valedictorian of his high school class in 1921. Unfortunately, before he was able to attend Harvard University he became ill with dysentery which almost killed him. Since dysentery kept him in bed for so long and almost killed him, he was sent to New Mexico in 1922 for the remaining summer. Oppenheimer stayed at a ranch near Santa Fe with Herbert Smith, a high school teacher and mentor for him. Oppenheimer absolutely loved the south west and frequently went on long horseback trips that would take a week at a time. He would go on these horse back trips in the wilderness. These experiences helped him get over his illness and left an impacting impression on him that later influenced his excitement for the placement of the laboratory he would eventually be over.
A young scientist who was very smart and intelligent was the creator of a bomb that killed millions. The bomb was the most powerful weapon that was ever manufactured. He changed the course of World War II. This man is Robert Oppenheimer, creator of the atomic bomb. The book “Bomb” by Steve Sheinkin, is a book that includes teamwork and how Americans made a deadly bomb that changed the course of the war. The book engages the reader through how spies share secret information with enemies. Because the physicists were specifically told not to share any information, they were not justified in supplying the Soviet Union with the bomb technology.

Upon hearing of Germany’s knowledge of splitting an uranium atom, he felt he must inform President Roosevelt about this. Roosevelt didn’t see the need in the atomic bomb but agreed to it anying. The code name for the atomic bomb was The Manhattan Project. Columbia University, the University of California at Berkeley, and the University of Chicago started the research for the atomic bomb. The atomic bomb was first served as an idea which was created underneath the United States government. With a nuclear weapon like the atomic bomb, came great responsibility. Robert Oppenheimer was the brilliant scientist behind the development of the atomic bomb. While atomic bombs kill lots of people, the atomic bomb won the war against the Japanese (World War 2). This helped because we would not have stood a chance attacking the main island on foot.
The dropping of the first atomic bomb marked a turning point in the way nations fight one another. The destructive nature of the atomic bomb changed the course of warfare forever. “The effectiveness of nuclear deterrence is best explained by the fact that it was based on fear unlike other peace-keeping strategies of the twentieth century.” This gradual shift to a “fear based” strategy was in response to the failures of previous peace keeping strategies earlier in the century during World War I and II, including the Wilsonian ideals, the treaty of Versailles at the end of World War I, and the concept of appeasement prior to the start of World War II.
America’s effort was slow until 1942, when Colonel Leslie Groves took over. He quickly chose personnel, production sites and set schedules to invent the atomic bomb. “At precisely 5:30 A.M. on Monday, July 16, 1945, the atomic age began. While Manhattan staff members watched anxiously, the device exploded over the New Mexico desert, vaporizing the tower and turning asphalt around the base of the tower to green sand. When the United States caught word that Germany was close to creating the atomic bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer and other scientists wanted to create it first, for the U.S. After three years of research, the first small atomic device was exploded on July 16, 1945 in the lab at Los Alamos. Having proved their concept worked, a larger scale bomb was built. Less than a month later, atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan (Rosenberg).
World War II brought up many new technologies for warfare. Advanced on existing developments such as weaponry, ships, vehicles air crafts, navigational devices and medicine are just a few broad examples of developments in warfare during this time in United States and World history. One development, however, changed the entire way of warfare. The Atomic bomb was developed during this time out of fears that the Germans had the same technologies, or at least were working to obtain it. Once the United States had this technological capability of producing atomic weapons, the way of fighting was changed. Two bombs were dropped on Japan in August of 1945, one on the city of Hiroshima and the other on the city of Nagasaki. Afterward, the ear of atomic diplomacy came up in American international relations, which as we have seen today, has led to the development of even stronger, more deadly weaponry and bombs. The bombing of Japan also brings up the still prevalent debate of whether the bombings were justifiable or not. Historians Gar Alperovitz, Robert P. Newman and Barton Bernstein all have written essays expressing their opinions in the matter.

The nuclear bomb was the most devastating weapon ever created by man. It was developed between 1942 and 1945 during the second World War. The project to build the worlds first atomic weapon was called The Manhattan Project. The nuclear bomb was based on the idea of splitting an atom to create energy, this is called fission. Three bombs were created, “Trinity”, “Little Boy”, and “Fat Man”. “Trinity” was dropped on a test site in New Mexico on July 16, 1945, proving the theories, engineering and mathematics of the bomb to be correct. Shortly after that, not more than 2 months, the U.S. performed the first actual nuclear attack in the history of war. The bomb “Little Boy” was dropped on the town of Hiroshima, instantly killing thousands. “Fat Man” was dropped shortly after on the town of Nagasaki. After the bombing almost all scientist involved with the creation of the bomb regretted its construction and spoke out against the abolishment of nuclear weapons.
On August 6, 1945 the city of Hiroshima was destroyed by the first atomic bomb used in warfare. The atomic bomb was an instrument of destruction which could of and has led to the end of mankind. Since the beginning of human life' with Adam and Eve thirst for knowledge has increase. At various points of time in history, knowledge was gained too fast and too powerful. This was one of those times that humans gained too much knowledge, too fast. Einstein, the greatest scientist that ever lived, had figure out the theorems for an atomic bomb all he needed was someone one that would help him make it. America did this knowing that the Germans might have already started. Before they had even time to test it, America let loose this bomb of devastation. The bomb would kill thousands directly and millions indirectly. The bomb would lead to the nuclear science. The bombs now a day (bombs with that could 3 times more powerful than the atomic bomb') could have never come to existence with out the atomic bomb'.
