Rowling’s choice to create the wizarding world of Harry Potter forever changed the 21st century. One of the most popular writers of all time, Rowling’s wizarding world continually draws in countless audiences. Winifred Radigan explains, “Rowling deserves every bit of fame and fortune that comes her way. She has touched us all with truth and love. What more could we ask?” (694) At the turn of the century, Rowling transported her readers into a world full of mythology, encompassing wizards, dragons, giants, three-headed dogs, unicorns, and more. Having just arrived at Hogwarts, Harry has the chance to join Draco Malfoy and his gang of troublemakers. Noticing Ron standing with Harry, Draco states, “Don’t want to go making friends with the wrong sort. I can help you there,” to which Harry replies, “I think I can tell who the wrong sort are for myself, thanks” (18). Harry had not even known Ron for very long, but he already saw Ron as the right sort of friend. Throughout the story, Ron proves to be a loyal and beneficial friend. In an article on Harry Potter, Shobha Ramaswamy remarks, “Ron gives Harry constant moral support and guidance. It is through Ron that Harry first learns most things about the magical world.” Ron, with a deep family background in magic, is able to enlighten Harry on many things throughout his stay at Hogwarts. Seeking out the sorcerer’s stone, Ron’s masterful skills at wizard’s chess prove very useful. In this real life game of chess, Ron humbly sacrifices himself to win the game, save his friends, and find the stone. Ron exclaims, “Harry, it's you that has to go on. I know it. Not me, not Hermione, you” (56). Ron willingly risks his life so that Harry can go on and complete the quest. In fact, Harry would not be the great wizard we read about today if it were not for his faithful friends. Dumbledore is the father-figure that Harry Potter needs. The Headmaster of Hogwarts, Dumbledore is always there for guidance, encouragement, and protection. All the students at the school trusted Dumbledore for wisdom and defense. Dumbledore persistently pushes Harry to pursue his destiny as the Chosen One. Just as Dumbledore is there for wisdom, Ron Weasley is there for support. Ron will always be there for Harry as a friend, an advisor, and as someone who will give up everything to save the one’s he loves. Hermione Granger one said, “Books and cleverness? There are more important things. Friendship, and bravery” (Rowling 56). Friendship and bravery are truly important aspects in the Harry Potter series. Friends who offer wisdom, advice, support, comfort, and even their lives are the types of friends Harry is lucky enough to have. In a later book, Dumbledore states, “"We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided" (Rowling Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire). Alongside his friends, Harry is strong. Alongside his friends, Harry is brave. Alongside his friends, Harry is capable of extraordinary things.
