Hip-hop music is my favorite genre of music because the way I grew up I can relate to a lot of the things it portrays. I also enjoy R&B and gospel music because it is what listened to as a child. Some hip-hop artist I enjoy are Fabulous, Andre 3000 and T.I. because a lot of their music tells a story and gives life lessons. J Cole is my favorite hip-hop artist because he makes great music, he is a philanthropist and he uses his platform to speak and act on social issues. Of course, everyone has their own opinion but I think J Cole is one of the best hip-hop artist because he makes great music. J Cole has 3 platinum albums and one of his albums 2014 Forest Hills Drive went double platinum. He also has many singles that has peaked at number one on billboard charts and other charts around the world. J Cole also produces his own albums and albums for other hip hop artists. He is involved in every aspect of his music from the beginning to the end. J Cole's music is also very relatable to many people who have been in the same situations. He raps about many life situations and a few that stuck out to me are paying back student loans, pressure of virginity while in …show more content…
high school, and the struggles of growing up as a black male etc. Furthermore, J Cole is a philanthropist who in my opinion wants everyone to succeed in life and accomplish their goal.
J Cole is the founder of the Dreamville Foundation which uplifts urban youths. The Dreamville foundation is a nonprofit organization whose goal is to show the youth their potential creating programs and events that set youth up for success. J Cole not only help the youth but he helped single mother by going back and purchasing his childhood home and gives it to single mother in their time of need. The families can live there rent free for 2 years. He also has made many donations to Fayetteville schools that helped student and the schools be better equipped. J Cole does not have the money that a lot of bigger name rappers like Jay Z but he is doing what he can to help with the money he
has. Finally, J Cole uses his platform to speak out on social issues that everyday people face. I think that it is very cool that even though he may not may not face these issues he speaks out for the people that do. J Cole always speak out on social issues that many people face but mainly the black community. One of his biggest songs was “Be Free” which speaks out on the Mike Brown case. He also visited Ferguson during the time of the riots to support the movement and give his thoughts on what was going on. Also during his concerts, he speaks on social issues and how violence is not the answer to deal with things like police brutality. J Cole is an amazing artist who does more than just make great music and for those reasons plus his music is why he is my favorite hip-hop artist. J Cole makes great music that many people enjoy. He is a philanthropist that gives back to his community and helps the youth so they can be better in the future. Cole also speaks out on social issues that everyday people face which will help America be better in the future. I don’t know J Cole personally but he seems like an all- around good guy who make great music and I look forward to many more songs and albums from him.

His path started like many others as Hip-Hop usually just talks about degrading of women, promiscuity, guns and drugs. When Cole finished high school he went off to college at St. Johns University. He had always helped young African Americans at some point in their lives that have had similar dreams of becoming something in life. Rap has always dominated most of the black community to assist in the expression of their feelings, emotions and situations. Single parent homes are very common in the African American Community, and J. Cole’s is also a product of this unfortunate circumstance as he writes about his life through his music. He has been fascinated by rap since he was fourteen and followed his dreams becoming Jay-Z’s
The genre of rap and hip-hop music has taken on a whole new persona in the generation of millennials. Fortunately, there are rappers such as Jermaine Cole, or “J Cole”, who work to hold on to a pure form of hip-hop and strive to portray a message in all of their songs. J Cole is a southern rapper with a northern style and flow. His main messages in all of his music is to speak the truth about his life and the world around him. You can listen to all his songs from the start of his career to now and you could understand who he is as and essentially listen to his growth as person. His song entitled “January 28th” is no exception to transparent style. The theme of the songs is to let his audience know that he extraordinary and he gives pieces
Rap music has given me personally something to look up to. Not a role model but hope of continuing my dreams because rappers successfully made it. “For what’s money without happiness, or hard times without the people you love” is from a song called “Love Yourz” by J. Cole. He clearly understands how there is “beauty in the struggle and ugliness in the success” because he’s lived that life. Other songs such as “2Face” or “The Autograph” were instantly relatable to me because he has been through several struggles from the beginning of his childhood. Cole’s father left when he was six leaving his mother and younger brother alone. Cole became “the man of the house” but becoming a rapper is not as easy as it seems. Cole’s messages in these two songs are relative because I too, have had several issues with my mother and father creating a sense of lonesome. Hearing music like Coles helped me overcome my

Growing up half White European and half African American Jermaine Lamarr Cole also more commonly known by his artist name as J Cole, struggled with black oppression when he moved from Germany; his birthplace, to North Carolina. J Cole 's father was black and left him and his mother when they moved to North Carolina. Therefore, J Cole grew up with his white European mother who raised him in a decent way where he could get an education and graduate from a University with a degree. There are many things I like about hip-hop. Including the beat, artists, and the big variety of voice styles. I love how most hip-hop songs have fast and upbeat tempos. It really makes me enjoy the music more. Also, a lot of artists include different meanings in their songs. Some may have been written when they were feeling down, energetic, or excited. I really enjoy how the different artists all have different voice styles. Some sing better than others but I like that.
He may just seem like another rapper to you but if you actually listen to his lyrics you can see he’s not like any rapper out there. His name is Kanye West and he was born in Chicago Illinois. He grew up in the “ghetto” and learned to appreciate life. He didn’t learn to really, truly appreciate life until October of 2002. Driving back to his hotel late one night after a recording session, the new-coming rap/hip-hop artist was involved in a devastating, near fatal car accident. The crash left him with a broken jaw in three places and an appreciation for life. Just weeks after being released from the hospital he recorded his first major hit, “Through the Wire,” with his mouth still wired shut. He records every song like its going to be his last song and that makes every song better than the last. He’s not only a rap artist but also a producer. He has been responsible for being behind songs like Jay-Z’s Izzo, Girls, Girls, Girls, The Takeover, and 03 Bonnie and Clyde.

Cole’s musical idols, which greatly influenced his musical style. His style captures the attention from younger generations and the adolescent population, whom also came from an uneasy childhood and along the way lost motivation. “I 'm here to spread a message of hope. Follow your heart. Don 't follow what you 've been told you 're supposed to do.” (Music times, 2014) Through this message, J. Cole constantly portrays to be an ambition seeking activist.
