I am in Moscow for a few days to see two performances of the Great Grigorovich ballet, Ivan the Terrible. I have seen this on video, but never live on stage, and it exceeded even my already high expectations. The casting last night was magnificent - Mikhail Lobukhin as Ivan, with Svetlana Zakharova as Anastasia and Denis Rodkin as Prince Kurbsky. In a word - EXTRAORDINARY! This truly is a wonderful piece of theatre - dark in places, yes, but intense, dramatic, compelling. I was barely conscious of breathing throughout, it held me so enthralled. It is a ballet that deserves to be seen on this huge Bolshoi stage and it seems so authentically Russian to me, set in 16th century Russia, with wonderful costumes of the time. Just the opening
scene is spectacular with the 8 bells with the ropes hanging down - it really emphasises the sheer vastness and height of the Bolshoi stage. Grigorovich uses his trademark patterning and shifting of groups of corps dancers to great effect throughout, but the real star of the show clearly is Ivan. Mikhail Lobukhin was a magnetic, powerful Ivan- literally terrifying in his entrance down the steps from his throne, where his use of his EYES was mesmerising, but his acting throughout was intense throughout - for me he is the best actor-dancer at Bolshoi. He performed some thrilling diagonals of grand jetes at the going into battle scene. Stirring stuff! I cannot fault his performance. The scene where he is in torment at the loss of his beloved Anastasia was actually harrowing in its intensity. The love scenes with Anastasia herself were tender, lyrical and all the many, exhausting lifts were accomplished with ease. The scene where he dances with the spirit of the dead Anastasia with female candle holding corps members was so beautiful, with the orthodox singing. Zakharova's lines throughout were exquisite. Those legs have never looked more beautiful to me. She was a true representation of purity. Denis Rodkin was superbly cast - virile, spectacular jumps - the audience loved him. There were numerous curtain calls with steady handicapping from the moment the curtain went down, and armfuls of bouquets for all the principals. Unforgettable performance! Grigorovich is a GENIUS. Tonight I will see Ivan Vasiliev with Olga Smirnova and Artem Ovcharenko - another exciting evening to some.
The nature versus nurture debate is one that has continued for years arguing over whether children are effected more by their innate personality or their personal experiences. No one knew the fault of the Romanov Dynasty better than him. Czar Nicholas sincerely felt his responsibility for the country, He thought that his destiny was within the country he ruled. I think it was really difficult for him but it was the only way to admit his mistakes and to say "sorry" to his people.

Why does the story begin with the death? Most books use mystery in the beginning and announce the death at the end. But Tolstoy used a different chronology, he started with the death of Ivan and then uses a flashback to show the reader what really happened. Also he chooses to start with the death to make the story seem real and not fictional. At Ivan’s funeral, nobody seemed devastated by the loss of Ivan, which gave the reader an understanding of how little Ivan’s life meant to the people even the ones close to him. Later in the reading, but before his death Ivan questions how he lived his mortality life and what if he lived his life properly. The element that stood out the most to me was how effectively the music and the footwork corresponded. The best examples of this are seen through the dancers solos. Especially Albrecht's solo, his feet glide on the stage at the same tempo as the music. Similarly, Giselle's graceful footwork is truly amazing. I really like the similarities between the choreographed footwork and the music, it makes Giselle seem much more elegant and beautiful. This also seems to make the work look more put together and in sync because the dancers are dancing in harmony with the orchestra. The choreography by itself is amazing. John in this chapter has an obsession with Lenina. He breaks into the rest house after he finds the door locked. He was terrified that Bernard and Lenina were gone. Once he realized that Lenina was there when he saw her initial on her green suit case joy “flared up like fire within him.” I thought this was pretty strange considering he has not know her for that long. He smelled her perfume, put scarf with the perfume around his neck, wiped her powder on his chest, shoulders, and bare arms whispering Lenina time. That is obsession and in my opinion is creepy! In Leo Tolstoy's The Death of Ivan Ilyich, the story begins with the death of the title character, Ivan Ilyich Golovin. Ivan's closest friends discover his death in the obituary column in chapter one, but it is not until chapter two that we encounter our hero. Despite this opening, while Ilyich is physically alive during most of the story's action he only becomes spiritually alive a few moments before his death.
But why has this ballet maintained its mass appeal since its first performance in 1892? Perhaps it is because, in an effort to outstage previous performances, directors continue to integrate elements of expressionism like plot distortion and stylized acting to create a fantasy world. The Nutcracker, written by Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky in 1891, was first performed a week before Christmas in 1892 (History of the Nutcracker). Born in Votkinsk, Russia, on May 7, 1840, Tchaikovsky, the son of a mining engineer, had only occasional musical training as a youth (“Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky” 1). Around the age of twenty-one, he did serious musical study and graduated with a silver medal from the St. Petersburg Conservatory(1).
In his novella, The Death of Ivan Ilyich, Leo Tolstoy satirizes the isolation and materialism of Russian society and suggests that its desensitized existence overlooks the true meaning of life—compassion. Ivan had attained everything that society deemed important in life: a high social position, a powerful job, and money. Marriage developed out of necessity rather than love: “He only required of it those conveniences—dinner at home, housewife, and bed—which it could give him” (17). Later, he purchased a magnificent house, as society dictated, and attempted to fill it with ostentatious antiquities solely available to the wealthy. However, “In reality it was just what is usually seen in the houses of people of moderate means who want to appear rich, and therefore succeed only in resembling others like themselves” (22). Through intense characterizations by the detached and omniscient narrator, Tolstoy reveals the flaws of this deeply superficial society. Although Ivan has flourished under the standards of society, he fails to establish any sort of connection with another human being on this earth. Tragically, only his fatal illness can allow him to confront his own death and reevaluate his life. He finally understands, in his final breath, that “All you have lived for and still live for is falsehood and deception, hiding life and death from you” (69).

From opening the Imperial Ballet School to the formation of the Vaganova technique, from the splendor of Anna Pavlova to the defection of Mikhail Baryshnikov and Rudolf Nureyev, Russian ballet’s past has been a rollercoaster. In the aftermath of the January 17, 2013 acid attack on the Bolshoi artistic director, Sergei Filin, the ballet world is under intense scrutiny of what really goes on behind closed doors. These scenes did not promote the storyline or show anything new. Typically, the dancers would enter and exit the stage seemingly without any reason but to showcase their talent. This frivolity made the ballet very long and drawn out. I felt that my knowledge of ballet did little to help me understand this work. However it did help me understand the effort and time dedicated to creating this ballet.
