It’s Time to Face the Problems Caused by Our Ancestors
The past two hundred years have witnessed a massive rise in both industrial and population growth. As a result we as a race have begun overusing and destroying our resources on a level never before seen in the history of humanity. OK. So what? Many would argue that we as a species need to expand; we have the right to control and use our environment to the extent that it will allow us. Humans can, should, and are affecting the world around them on a level never before seen or recorded by society. These last statements epitomize what I call “the economists view” of environmental degradation. We have always exploited the environment to a large degree, and we have always emerge fine, in fact, we are arguably more fine now than we have ever been in the past. So why bother?
What is the problem with overpopulation, one might ask? More people on the Earth? Great! More people to expand humanity! More geniuses born into each generation to solve the problems the last generation left behind. What’s the big deal? Surprisingly, on the order of serious environmental problems, few people outside the scientific or political spheres have any idea about the threat overpopulation poses. The Earth’s population as of now is about 6 billion right now. It took the entirety of human existence up until 1960 to reach the level of 3 billion. It took, oh, 30 years after that for the world’s population to double. How long will it take to double again? As of now, all the soldiers that died in World War II would be replaced within less than half an hour. No one has any idea how many people the Earth is actually able to hold. As of now, we are sitting on a larger version of Easter Island not sure when the shoe is going to drop. More geniuses born to solve our problems for us? Not if they are born in to peasant parents in an Indian town and never get the education they can use to help humanity. The truth is we have no idea how many people the Earth can hold. One can even argue that the Earth can’t support all the people it has now. Millions upon millions do not have it as cushy as Americans do, there is mass starvation in many third world countries as well as other problems associated with children.
The majority of this piece is dedicated to the author stating his opinion in regards to civilization expanding beyond its sustainable limits. The author makes it clear that he believes that humans have failed the natural environment and are in the process of eliminating all traces of wilderness from the planet. Nash points out facts that strengthen his argument, and quotes famous theologians on their similar views on environmental issues and policies. The combination of these facts and quotes validates the author’s opinion.
In, The Population Bomb by, Paul R Ehrlich, he explains the problem of population increase, and how there are people everywhere! The feeling of feeling over populated. He talks about how if there are more people then there is more food that needs to be produced then ate. He explains on the rich people becoming wealthier and the poor are going to be even poorer and there is going to be a starvation. Population is doubling every year and how our energy is turning into
Jared Diamond may be correct in that human activities have caused environmental issues that irreparable. The thing that is missing from this book, was the individual position. The book goes into explanations on how societies as a whole make the decision to impact the environment, when in reality it is the individuals who make the choices and influence those around themselves. What is intriguing is that Jared Diamond not only talks about the mismanagement of environment or the natural destruction of environment, he focuses on how human culture and beliefs influenced the mismanagement. It is very appropriate to engage into the rationalization of why events or the mismanagement occurred. Understanding that hunters and gatherers had to fail in one civilization otherwise there would be no need to enter into the agricultural era. From reading this book, one might find it oddly frightening that the environment is in peril because of personal action. The ideology that this book presents works in a way that it gets people thinking if their way of living is best for the society or if it is slowly, but gradually destroying the
Irrigation has been a significant part of Yuma County’s history, as it has affected the county and areas around it in several ways, and has been affected itself by Yuma’s ways to evolve to a more relevant and helpful operation. It has changed Yuma from a small farming community to an agriculturally efficient town. Technology has also had a hand in moving irrigation in Yuma forward, including beginning the Yuma Project which affected different groups of people over time. Irrigational development also benefited geographically from Yuma, creating more fitting irrigation systems. Ultimately, the development of irrigation was affected by the attributes of Yuma, and in turn affected Yuma County and southern Arizona itself by providing technological
50,000 to 60,000 acres from Yuma to Mexico are fertile because of irrigation. Without agriculture the economy would be in complete jeopardy. Irrigation really changed the realm of Yuma. Acres in irrigation went from 13,000 to 6,100. When there is that many farms, you need people to work at the farms. The number of towns went from 2 to 6. The population in the towns went from 3,524 to 35,000. Every single statistic went up when irrigation was in full effect. In the Southwest, agriculture was the way of life. If there job wasn't in agriculture, it was affected by agriculture. Every 100 jobs in agriculture supported 26 jobs in other occupancies.Eighty percent of the Colorado River’s water goes into agriculture. Without the River there would likely be no Yuma or maybe just a small town nobody knows. The agriculture business is still the biggest business in Yuma. Without the building of projects like the Laguna Dam and the Yuma Siphon, we would be nowhere close to where they are today. The southwest was on its way to becoming the agricultural capital of the
To begin with, According to Newsdeeply, after four years of historic water shortages, farm earnings in the state increased 16 percent, and total employment increased 5 percent. California’s farm economy is still continuing to grow overall, despite the worst drought ever recorded in the state. Particular crops
Agriculture and irrigation have long been a part of the Colorado River basin and desert southwest. Irrigation is the artificial supply of water to the land, an integral part of the Colorado River and its basin. More than 1,500 years ago, the Hohokam irrigated more than 200,00...
The lack of groundwater oversight has unfortunately introduced concerns that need to be mitigated and better addressed. Some groundwater basins throughout the state are not sustainable for they have experienced a depletion in groundwater storage, experienced groundwater overdraft, had a reduction in stream flows, the potential to lose ecosystems, had a depletion in groundwater quality, experienced land subsidence, and or faced salt water intrusion.

Recently the United States has begun to experience a women’s musical renaissance. Women’s roles in pop music are steadily growing. There have been many outstanding female musicians and vocalists in the past that have aided in making the music industry less of a male opinionated society, from Aretha Franklin, Mo Tucker, and Ella Fitzgerald to pop icons like Courtney Love, Queen Latifa, and Melissa Ethridge. Along side these, there are two women who have conquered most obstacles they’ve faced and, in addition, forced the music industry to become more of a female friendly environment. Those two women are Madonna and Brittany Spears.
So many young people go into the entertainment business. Most of them do not know that without a support system to keep them grounded and stable their mental development can be compromised. The society that we place so high in our culture and deem worthy of such high praise, eat our children alive. They grow too fast, have to defend themselves constantly, and are watched around the clock. As a society, we must take a look at what we are doing to the people in the entertainment industry.
Agriculture is not only key to California’s economy, but also the United States’ entire economy because California is largest agriculture producer in the nation, according to the Economic Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture. Because California’s agriculture is vital to the United States’ economy and agriculture consumption, the drought’s effects are felt across the nation. It is reasonable to assume that the drought negatively impacts the agriculture industry in California. According to, “Impacts of California’s Ongoing Drought: Agriculture,” by lead author Heather Cooley of the Pacific Institute, California’s harvested acreage dropped by 856,000 acres between 2012 and 2014 (10). As the drought progressively worsens, California’s agricultural sector produces less and less total harvest. A common assumption would be that because California produced less agriculture harvest, profits declined; however, this is a misconception. Cooley notes that between 2000 and 2011, crop revenue grew from $21 billion to $28 billion, but then the drought took effect between 2011 and 2013, crop revenue soared to a record high of $34 billion (13). Although the increase in revenue may seem paradoxical, but according to the
Individuals can play a role in helping with the fallouts as outlined in the previous paragraphs though. Whether this is volunteering to help clean up a dirtied beach littered with garbage or switching to a water efficient nozzle so less water is wasted when you shower, these are just a few examples of immediate solutions that can make a collective difference. It ultimately won’t help the issue of overpopulation but can help deter the consequences as in the end, the concern revolves around the ability to sustain our world as more bodies are introduced. Keeping in mind that as society grows, the world makes advancements that work as viable solutions that tackle these problems. There just needs to be a mindset of utilizing more efficient measures into our daily lives right now so that we can make a positive difference. Even if it does not solve the issue in the long run, it does influence those around us and pushes the world towards a common goal one step at a time. It was said by Brundtlan (WCED, 1987) that:
During the past several hundred years, humans have begun to industrialize rapidly. Tons of new technologies with all sorts of capabilities have sprung up. In many cases, these added capabilities have been used to manipulate natural things for human benefit, often at the expense of other things. On the other hand, technological advancement has required that humans come to a better understanding of the world, bringing with it a greater potential to do good, to manipulate things for the benefit of the planet. Technological advancement has essentially given us the “can”, and so now the question becomes “should”. Should we do something because we can? Industrialization has increased the effect humans have on the environment, for good or for bad.
Overpopulation is a growing problem all over the world. This is a very important environmental issue and needs to be dealt with. This environmental problem is affecting many countries in the world, but mostly the poor and impoverished countries that don’t have the resources to help deal with these issues. It also affects the environment like plants animal life and air quality. When the population of people expands we need more natural resources from the environment, so we consume more then we can produce. This leads to the lack of resources in many areas. When expanding we create a lot of pollution in the air, water, and land. The pollution affects many humans health. Overpopulation is doing more harm than any other environmental issue. Overpopulation also causes many of the other issues we are dealing with. This is very dangerous to not only us humans but the planet. Even though many wealthy countries are not affected by this overpopulation, I feel like they should help the cause. There is always two sides to an issue like this. Some people don’t think that overpopulation is a big problem and the ones who say it is an issue that needs to be dealt with.
