The statement “children with social skill problems become adults with social skill problems” hit me hard. Before I watched the video “It’s so Much Work to be your Friend”, I just thought that students with social skill problems only struggled in school situations where everything almost evolves around good communication skills. So, I thought after the student got out of school, all of these problems would disappear, but I was wrong. I learned that these students brought over some of the same struggles that they had to deal with in school, into adulthood. The movie mentioned that students who have a social skill problem, often have problems with proxemics, vocalics, artifactual systems, and kinesics. effects when the child grows up and enters the working world. A good example of this could be wearing a pair of flip flops, shorts and a tank top to a job interview in the middle of the winter. This could easily happen to an adult who has poor artifactual skills and does not know how to properly dress for the occasion. A more drastic example that the movie uses is that an adult who has poor proxemics skills could end up molesting a child without even knowing what they are doing is wrong. This could happen because when the student was younger, they used to have tickle fights with their little cousins, so he thinks it is still okay to tickle them when they are much older. This shows that an adult with a social skills problem will most likely receive a more severe punishment for his or her actions then a younger student which makes the statement “children with social skill problems become adults with social skill problems” even scarier. The use of nonverbal language is very important in communicating with other people and can negatively impact one’s social skills if they do not acquire this key skill.
The movie said that 93% of how we communicate with each other is just through paralinguistics and this includes gestors, posture and tone. If a student has a hard time understanding nonverbal language, they normally have a hard time understanding sarcasm and also would have a hard time at picking up facial cues which would cause the student to take everything word for word. A good example of this from the movie is when the speaker said “You guys are a great audience” in a sarcastic tone. This shows that the words mean one thing, but the tone means something totally different. A student with poor social skills probably would take the message word for word and misunderstand what the speaker was trying to say completely. This same thing could happen in the school setting with a student misunderstanding a different student because of their use of sarcasm. A powerful example in the movie of a student not being able to read facial and body gestors was a story about a young boy who was driving his toy truck back and forth across his desk. The teacher soon became annoyed with it, so she glared at him to stop but he did not. She then crossed her arms and frowned at him, but he still did not stop. Finally, she yelled at him to stop so he did. All of the other students were confused why he did not stop earlier before she got really angary but because of the student’s poor social skills, he was unable to pick up on the facial and body signals that the teacher
sent. A different example of a student unable to pick up on a person’s nonverbal language was about a teenage girl waiting at a vending machine in her school’s cafeteria. A girl was wanting a snack, so she decides to go buy something out of the vending machine. When she got there, she could not decide what to get so she ended up just looking at all of the options for about 2 minuets. During this time, she did not notice the principal waiting behind her impatiently. The principal was using several nonverbal cues, tapping her foot, crossing her arms and leaning on one foot to tell the girl to hurry up, but the girl never noticed. Finally, the principal just gave up and walked away not buying anything. This just shows that students with social skill problems have difficulties picking up on nonverbal language and this could play a negative effect in their school career
The presence of nonverbal messages in our communication is very important. Following the text, researchers have estimated it is up to “65 percent of social meaning we convey in face-to-face interactions is a result of nonverbal behavior” (131). The movie “Mrs. Doubtfire” is a typical example about the interactions among characters, also with audience. Students with speech and language disorders may have “trouble producing speech sounds, using spoken language to communicate, or understanding what other people say” (Turkington, p10, 2003) Each of these problems can create major setbacks in the classroom. Articulation, expression and reception are all essential components for communication. If a student has an issue with articulation, they most likely then have difficulty speaking clearly and at a normal rate (Turkington, 2003). When they produce words, they may omit, substitute, or even distort sounds, hindering their ability to talk. Students who lack in ways of expression have problems explaining what they are thinking and feeling because they do not understand certain parts of language. As with all types of learning disabilities, the severity can range. Two extreme cases of expression disorders are dysphasia and aphasia, in which there is partial to no communication at all (Greene, 435, 2002). Individuals can also have a receptive disorder, in which they do not fully comprehend and understand information that is being given to them.
