Poetry is a great way to express how someone feels. Great poets write poems about events and situations that they could never have imagined (Epstein 4). “Cavafy’s achievement was somehow to write outside time by anchoring his writing as firmly as possible inside time” (Epstein 4). In the year 1911 Cavafy produced “Ithaca” (Ithaka), which was one of his best poem’s, at the age of forty-eight (Epstein 3). This poem is truly one that captures the readers mind and makes him or her think about life. This poem translates into real life situations that many people will have to face or have faced.
C.P. Cavafy was a Greek poet who lived in the ancient city of Alexandria. He was the youngest of nine children (Epstein 1). “Cavafy lived in England from ages 9 to 16. The collapse of the family business led back to Alexandria, working as a journalist and then as a civil servant for Egypt’s Ministry of Public Works ” (Timpane 1). Cavafy was raised with a French tutor and an English nurse in the house (Epstein 2). “A skeptic, he denied or ridiculed traditional values of Christianity, patriotism, and heterosexuality, though he was ill at ease with his own nonconformity” (Cavafy1 1). Cavafy was extremely discreet about his personal life. After his mom died he became more open (Timpane 2). Cavafy died at age seventy due to larynx cancer. He had no collected edition of his poems, nor did he leave instructions for one (Epstein 2). “Constantine Cavafy became one of the most important figures not only in Greek poetry but in Western poetry as well. Cavafy was his own harshest critic, publishing only about 200 poems” (Cavafy1 1).

... great wisdom you have gained, with so much experience/you must surely have understood by then what Ithacas mean ”(34-36). The moral is not to be mad when one reaches the end; it is only the beginning of his or her new life. People learn so much on voyages, and “Ithaca” does what it was meant to do: guide each person through life and help him or her achieve more and have the greatest life adventure possible.
The poem reflects upon how his mother helped him through everything he did. In the last stanzas Cavafy talks about how he has gained wisdom and experience. His mother played a very important role in his life and this is how he gained that experience and wisdom. Once she died his poetry became more open. C.P. Cavafy is truly one of the best poets who can capture a reader’s mind and take him or her on the best adventure that could have ever been imagined.

“Our life’s journey of self-discovery is not a straight-line rise from one level of consciousness to another. Instead, it is a series of steep climbs, and flat plateaus, then further climbs. Even though we all approach the journey from different directions, certain of the journey’s characteristics are common for all of us.” Author Stuart Wilde’s impression of journeys and their shared commonalities supports the claim that all journeys have a motive and an outcome. In the epic poem, The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus sets off to defeat Troy, leaving his wife and child behind. After accomplishing his goal, Odysseus faces many problems while trying to return him and his crew back home to Ithaca. Similar to Odysseus’s physical journey, the goal in

Poetry is a versatile avenue from which waves or ripples can be made potentially. A writer of poetry has the ability to make their readers feel a while wide array of emotions and situations synonymous with the human condition. I, at first, was completely turned off to the idea of poetry at first because all I was exposed to early on by way of poetry were bland professions of love or lust or seemingly simple poems I was forced to process down to a fine word paste. Edgar Allan Poe was interesting, but it was a tad bit dry to me. But, after reading poems the Harlem Renaissance gave me a bit of hope for poetry. To me, the poetry written during that time period has a certain allure to it. They have serious depth and meaning that I, myself and empathize
The Odyssey is filled with emotion and adventure. Homer’s ability to show and give the reader a visual of each and every scene gives the story its unbelievable significance. To all the people who read his work there is something to be captured within every sentence, each one different in its own, unique way. Through tales of courage and defeat, friendship and love this book tells of all the values within the life of a single, solitary man, and his journey to attain what is true and dear to him. No matter where they go or what they do, humans are tested for certain characteristics everyday of their lives, whether they realize it or not; and The Odyssey is just one of those many miraculous tests.
People learn lessons every day. They can either learn them the easy way, or they can learn them the hard way. Homer documented Odysseus’ journey back to Ithaca in The Odyssey. In this journey, Odysseus learns several life lessons that applied to our lives.
Ancient Greece produced a multitude of sophisticated poets. One such poet, Sappho, happens to be the only female Ancient Greek author, in the midst of a male-driven field, whose work has survived. Frequently referred to as the tenth muse, Sappho often wrote on the topic of homosexuality. Her poetry, combined with the name of the island she lived on, Lesbos, inspired the modern day term ‘lesbian’. Another influential Greek poet was Catullus. Catullus typically wrote using intense emotion; this periodically led to the use of vulgar language. Catullus was a blunt, bold anti-political writer whom consistently referenced Sappho throughout his poetry. Although there are a plethora of differences between the two poets, such as their writing style; with Sappho including an abundance of detail while Catullus opted for a more concise approach, there are also distinct similarities. Both poets discuss controversial topics; more importantly, neither were afraid to stand up for what they believed in.
Poetry is often forgotten in our society. Poetry is mistaken for something less than its greater meaning. Four specific poets demonstrate the true meaning of poetry through their words and imagery. These poets use their own language to speak to us in poetry, by describing a major event that has happened in their life. It is truly captivating to hear these poets speak from another aspect that we are not use too.
Aristophanes in Plato’s The Banquet, gave an extraordinary account of sexuality. According to him, in the legend of the ancient world there were three types of people. “In ancient times

“What is poetry?” Aristotle starts his Poetics book with this enchanting question. After reading Aristotle’s Poetics I began to think about poetry. Poetry to me is an art and art comes in very many different intermingled objects and ideas. After discussing what is art in my Fysem class and reading about it in Poetics, I will discuss in my paper what I think is art. Even though Aristotle’s Poetics is a lot about poetry, poetry is art and there are tons of properties the reader can use in any type of art based off of Aristotle’s Poetics.
