Italy is a truly unique and picturesque country. Its history, landforms, culture, ecosystems, and location are unlike any other country in the world. These elements make it one of the top tourist attractions in the world. Italy’s geography has a great amount of variety. Italy is found south of Central Europe, east of Tyrrhenian Sea, and west of the Adriatic Sea. Its absolute location is 42N, 12E. Italy’s longest river is the Poe and the Tiber river, which is historically important to Rome, is the third longest river in the country. Some rivers like the Adige river runs through the Alps. It is 2.1% of their GDP. In particular Italy grows grapes for their famous wine. Along with growing grapes they also grow olives for their olive oil that is sold around the world. Most of the farms are in the south. Because of the rocky and hilly terrain in the south Italians have to grow their crops on terraces. Many of Italy’s farms are family owned which means the family grows and manages the farm on their own. Italy’s economy, which uses the euro and is equivalent to $1.22, thrives on tourism which is 13% of their GDP, 6 times bigger than agriculture. For example, the official language of italy, italian which is a romance language, has been shaped by several different languages. These include Latin, Greek, and various local dialects. Not only did the Italians take ideas from other countries when creating their language they also took used outside sources when creating their flag. When the Italians created their flag they took inspiration from France. They changed the colors from blue, white, and red to green, white, and red. The green represents the hills and plains in Italy, the white snow capped mountains, and the red blood spilled in the Italian
The Republic of Ireland is a beautiful country well known as the “Emerald Isle” because of its rolling green hills. Ireland is full of landforms and accumulates much rain which helps keep Ireland very lush. Since Ireland is an island the climate tends to stay cool because it is surrounded by water. Along its shoreline there are many breathtaking landmarks. Ireland has a very similar government to the United States with similar challenges.
As for place, Italy’s climate is Mediterranean for the most part. In the North it is cold and in the South it is hot and dry. It also has a huge variety of landforms like rivers or volcanoes. The Alps and Apennines are mountain ranges that form an arch-like barrier that protects the country from foreign threats in the north. The Apennines are sometimes called the
The majority language spoken in Italy is Italian, however, there are a few minor languages spoken in different regions of Italy such as German, or French (Commisceo Global, 2016). Unlike Italy, the United States has different accents depending on the region of the United States we are from, but there is only one language that is spoken and understood by all people.
The Italian Peninsula is one of the three main peninsulas of the Southern part of Europe (and the other two peninsulas are the Iberian Peninsula and the Balkan Peninsula), each spread apart 1,000 km from the Po Valley in the north to the central Mediterranean Sea in the south. The peninsula has always been bordered by the Tyrrhenian Sea on the west, the Ionian Sea on the south, and the Adriatic Sea on the east. The inner part of the Apennine Peninsula contains the Apennine Mountains, from which it takes its own name, the northern part has very large plains and the coasts are all lined with cliffs.
Italy has a current population of 58,742,000 people in the twenty first century. The geography consists of a mountainous peninsula in southern Europe, which then extends all the way to the Mediterranean Sea. This includes the islands of Sicily, Sardinia, and numerous amounts of other smaller islands. The mountain range known as the Alps, forms Italy's border with France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia (National Geographic). The majority of Italy has a Mediterranean climate, which is typically defined as having cool, rainy winters and hot, dry summers.
Italy in World War II World War II, which only lasted about five years, changed the course of history forever, and affected millions of lives. Among the major nations that were involved in the war, Benito Mussolini and his Italian army sought to settle their differences with many nations. Benito’s fascist views, his idea of a nation built by one race, and his relationship with Adolf Hitler ultimately led to his involvement in the war. His responsibility, in essence, was to ally himself with the superpowers of the world, and lead his people into a war that they could not fight. " Il Duce", (the leader), was the name that Benito Mussolini gave himself as his rise to power in Italy continued.
There’s a lot more to being Italian than the typical stereotypes that we have come to know from movies, television and books. From the Catholic mobsters who kill during the week but always make it to mass on Sunday, to the “how you doin” views of Joey from the television show “Friends”, people often forget the more important parts of being Italian. It is a culture like no other, full of history, art, and most importantly, their passion for food. Italian food, in my opinion, is the best in the world. Italians put so much into everything they make that the time and effort is tasted with every single bite. One of my favorite dishes would have to be fettuccini alfredo and it just happens to be a fairly easy, but extremely delicious, dish to make. Trust me, if I can make it, you can make it.
Pietro da Cortona was an Italian painter, interior designer, and architect. He was born on November 1, 1556, in Tuscany, and died on May 16, 1669. Pietro was an exponent of the baroque style. In fact, he was considered the most important baroque painter in Rome. He had two rivals, Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini.
Religion is something that people all over the world have fought wars for. Whether that religion be Judaism, Christianity, or many other diverse religions. Many people have fought and died for their religion as it gives them something to believe in passed the world we know and live in. For Italy it is Christianity as 88 percent of the population belong to the Roman Catholic Church, even though only around one third of these people consider themselves “active” in their religion (“Religion in Italy : A Christian country”). Although such a large percentage of the people are Christian that doesn’t mean that other religions don’t have prominence in Italy. In fact there are around one million Muslims, seven hundred thousand Eastern Orthodox Christians, five hundred fifty thousand evangelical Protestants, two hundred thirty five thousand Jehovah’s Witnesses, forty five thousand Jewish people, and many other smaller religions (“Religion in Italy : A Christian country”). Despite the vast majority of people practicing Christianity in Italy all of these religions thrive. Most importantly though freedom of religion is guaranteed under the Italian constitution, besides extreme sects (“Religion in Italy: A Christian country”). The most important building for religion in Italy is the Vatican. The Vatican is home to the government of the Roman Catholic Church as well as the home to the Pope who is the spiritual leader of the church (“Religion in Italy: A Christian country”). The Vatican has its own post office, newspaper, radio, and television stations (“Religion in Italy: A Christian country”). There has been close relations between the church and the state which influences the politics and society of Italy (“Religion in Italy: A Christian country”). Out of all the major countries in the world Italy may have the closest relationship between church and state.
Italy is a developed country in Europe with a population of 59.83 million people. Life expectancy is the second highest in Europe and ranks tenth in the world, having an average lifespan of 82.2 years. Italian healthcare has been universal since 1978 and has remained effective ever since. Italy is ranked as the second best healthcare system, just behind France. There are many factors that ensure the effectiveness of the Italian healthcare system, such as government funding and individual cost, private insurance companies, medical technology, and preventative measures and the spread of diseases.
Visiting Europe has been a long dream for me, especially visiting Italy. Italy has fascinated for as long as I can remember. Italian history and culture has always been intriguing to me ever since I learned about the Roman Empire in elementary school. I’ve always had Rome as my number one place I want to visit in the world. However, due to my financial status, I never had the chance to go to outside any country except the United States and my native country, Peru. Being in college has given me the opportunity to study abroad in a place I’ve always dreamed of. My university, Loyola University Chicago, have their own campus abroad in Rome, Vietnam and Beijing. Being already enrolled in the university, choosing to study abroad is facilitated as all my financial aid, including the university’s, and credits will transfer. I actually never planned on studying but the opportunity my university gave me to study in a place I’ve always wanted to go was too good for me to pass on. I
In the early years of the twentieth century, Italy has created a new system of government, however suffered social and economic conditions. Improvements were made however, poverty and literacy were still problems that have not been solved well. While entering World War I, the nation was neutral up until joining the British and French in exchange for certain advantages. However, it was unsuccessful as Italy failed to take control of the territories that it claimed at the Versailles Peace Conference, and suffered significant losses. The ideology of fascism occurred when the power of Italy was shrinking and the idea of being a pacifist became weak. Benito Mussolini created a group of fascists to represent a means to stop the socialists and the communists coming into his nation.
In the words of Giuseppe Verdi, “You may have the universe if I may have Italy” (Brainyquote.com). Italy is one of the top hotspots for vacation, and there is a plethora of reasons why. Immediately upon arriving, you can smell the aroma of fresh, home-made foods. The beauty of the architecture in even the average buildings is overwhelming. The culture is unique and fascinating; unlike anything you will ever see anywhere else. There are so many places you could visit in Italy, you could spend a lifetime there, and it would never be enough. Rome, Tuscany, Pompeii, Pisa, Florence, and Venice are must-sees, to name just a handful. (http://www.kids-world-travel-guide.com) Italy is in essence, a paradise unlike any other, that everyone should have the privilege of enjoying. (pathos)
Italian food is the world’s most popular cuisine. It is an essential part of Italian life and very common to non-Italians. The most well-known Italian dishes today are pasta and pizza, but Italian cuisine varies greatly from one region to another. For instance, “the popular Italian-American dishes generally come from the southern region of Campania and the island of Sicily, just off the southern coast” (Traditional Italian). However, many years ago, Italy was made up of different nations, conquered by many, and it experienced vast influences from different countries. These impacts would shape the food of Italy and its’ culture.
The side walk cafes are very popular in Rome. The cafes were always populated with happy Italians and a few curious tourists. The most preferred cafe was the Cafe S. Petro. this cafe was in perfect walking distance from the Vatican city. The Vatica n city is were the pope lives. The main meals served at the cafes varied from pizza to tortillini. The pizzas were not exactly like Pizza Hut's pizza. They were crispy thin with very few toppings available. Most pizzas came with cheese, pepperoni and a watery tomato sauce. The tortillini had soft, medium-length, hollow noodles with more watery tomato sauce. Another favorite at the cafe was the lasagna which was unbelievably delicious. After having tasted the pizzas and the tortillini, I was not exp ecting the lasagna to be so tasty. The lasagna was packed full of hot meat, zesty cheese, and a tangy tomato sauce. It was not out of the ordinary to see Italians, instead of eating at the cafe, talking with their friends and sipping on hot cappucino.
