Have you ever felt so isolated and useless that you could not do anything to resolve a problem? This is case that happens to a young man that goes by the name Ronald Adams and others. “The Hitchhiker” takes place on the road and several gas stations. The main character Adams is about to head for a trip to California when his mom (Mrs.Adams) practically begs for him to stay she, says how she is worried and tells him “... But I -I hate to see you go...I wish you weren't driving...”(pg.3 Fletcher) Determined to go on this trip,” Adams heads for California leaving her worried and sad. By the author writing this way about Mrs. Adams feelings it, show’s how she express sensory details. Readers Can actually hear and picture her saying this and basically see how and why she feels that Adams needs to stay home. In Lucille Fletcher’s “The Hitchhiker” readers learn that you don’t always get what you want in life.Have you ever been followed or controlled to the point where you just can’t handle it anymore? This is what happened to Ronald, while Adams is driving he witnesses an odd man hitchhiking at the end of the street, not thinking anything of it Adams he moves forward with his driving. Ordinarily if being nice means that you care for others, then the hitchhiker is not nice because …show more content…
he keeps scaring Adams by following him. As Adams goes through a tunnel he sees the same odd hitchhiker again, and this time he is yelling at Adams “Hello! Hello!”(pg.15 Fletcher) terrified Adam's “...steps on the gas like a shot..”(pg.4 Fletcher) He is now confused and shaken by all this action, but keeps driving.” About the eighth time of seeing this man, Adams has had enough. So he calls his mom looking for some comfort, but when he does, a woman named Mrs. Whittney answers and says with great irony “Mrs. Adams is not at home. She’s still in the hospital...Nervous breakdown.. It’s all been taken place of the death of her oldest son, Ronald.” Paralyzed with fear/flummoxed Adams hangs up silently with his blank thoughts. This part of the story during the phone call, represents sensory details because, readers can imagine how sad and confused Ronald feels right now, and readers can also picture his reaction to this shocking and horrifying news. Throughout this whole story everybody experiences the hardship of not always getting what you want in life.
For Instance like how Mrs. Adams wanted her son to stay home, but instead of staying for his mom, he left and ended up dying so,she she definitely did not get what she wanted.Another example of how you don’t always get what you want in life is when Adams desperately, wanted the hitchhiker to go away but he didn’t .The hitchhiker followed him invariably which gave Adams an overwhelming fear and loss of hope. Therefore given the evidence provided and the repetition, sensory details and irony the theme of “The Hitchhiker” has to be that you don’t always get what you want in
life. Some may think that the theme of “The Hitchhiker” is to treat others the way you want to be treated or else it will come back to bite you. While this is a good claim, there are some problems with this however. First of all Adams was kind by picking up the woman who was hitchhiking and talking to her. Secondly Mrs.Adams, even though she did not want her son to travel so far away and alone, but,she knew how much it meant to him so she let him go. The claim that you don’t always get what you want in life Shows that,Adams wanted the hitchhiker to go away and stop torturing him but the hitchhiker did not stop. So Adams did not get what he wanted which was to get far away from the hitchhiker. Another thing is that Mrs.Adams told her son to be careful on his trip. But he wasn’t careful and ended up passing away in a car accident so, she definitely did not get what she wanted. This is a better claim because, nobody gets what they want in this story while as with the theme treat the way you want to be treated or else it will come back and bite you. This theme does not work with this story as well as the other theme because some people in the story did treat others with kindness.” Throughout the story of “The Hitchhiker” readers learn the hardship as to how it feels to be useless and isolated. This refers to how Mrs.Adams felt when she begged her son to stay home but he left, leaving her with this sa/worried felling and her “stifling.. sobs.” (pg.3 Fletcher) Secondly this also represents how Adams felt when the hitchhiker keep following him. Readers can tell this statement is true because Adams said “I didn’t know who this man was-or what he wanted of me.I only knew that from now on--I mustn’t let myself alone on the road for one minute.”(pg.12 Fletcher) Readers know that Adams is definitely horrified and feels isolated because he mentions, how he can’t be alone on the road much longer and just by those few words you can just see how terrified he is. In addition, people that experience isolation and fear begin to feel useless, therefore because of Adam's fear and isolation, feelings he does not want to be alone anymore . Lastly, another example of feeling isolated and useless is the hitchhiker,he feels this way because of the way Adams keeps ignoring him and driving off also when he asks for a ride to california from Adams he replies”No,no,not today!the other way! Going to New York!Sorry.” and he “Drives off..tires squeaking.” (pg.8 Fletcher) The hitchhiker has to be hurt by Adam's actions because for one he ignores his existence also Adams repeated the word (no) twice and he yelled out his words and those are signs of lying.Another thing is he just drove off, which is very rude to do when someone asks you for a favor, so the hitch hiker had to feel useless and isolated.Incunclution every body experiences not getting the satisfaction of what you want at times,in this storey the characters constantly don’t get their hopes accomplished like how Mrs.Adams did not get her son home safely or how Adams could not escape the hitchhiker. These examples and throughout the storey show how you can’t always get what you want in life.
Lucille Fletcher’s story “The Hitchhiker”, is a story that creates fear in the hearts of some people. And not just any fear, a fear that would impel even the strongest man to go insane. The main character, Ronald Adams, had that fear, with seeing a hitchhiker more than ten times drove him to almost getting hit by a train. Fletcher creates an effective, and suspenseful story, with the use of elemental plots.
Many characters have hopes and dreams which they wish to accomplish. Of Mice and Men has two main characters that go through obstacles to get what they want. In the beginning it is George and Lennie running away trying to get a job. Once both George and Lennie have a job they try to accomplish their dreams. Unfortunately they both can't get their dreams to come true since lennie does the worst and George has to shoot Lennie. Steinbeck uses characterization, foreshadowing, and symbol as rhetorical strategies to make George's actions justified.
One theme the story leaves us is that always chase your dreams no matter how hard it is and if you fail just stand up and try again.
Considering how difficult life can be at times, people tend to take the easy road at every chance they get, despite the immoral consequences of their actions. The character in “A Good Man is Hard to Find” that made these type of decisions was the Grandma. She takes the easy way by lying in order to convince her family to sidetrack to a house that doesn’t exist, and then upon realizing that she was mistaken, causing a car crash. Upon recognizing this, she thinks “the thought was so embarrassing that she turned red in the face and her eyes dilated and her feet jumped up… the car turned over once and fell right-side-up in a gulch off the side of the road.” This describes the climatic event
What we hope for is not always what we need. This is prevalent in the novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Neale Hurston where the characters have his or her dream crushed for the sake of fate. This is especially true for Janie who strives throughout the novel to have her dream of “the pear tree” realized, and Hurston shows this using a variation of metaphor, imagery, and personification.
She believes the American Dream means having family and a home. Her beliefs are not negative, but her attitude regarding obtaining these possessions is negative. She tries to obtain a family or a loving relationship and preserve a home by any means necessary. In the novel, she is portrayed as a separated young woman whom is irresponsible and selfish. She willingly pursues a married man in an effort to have someone she can love and someone to love her back. She does not want to be alone or feel lonely. She disregards the wife and children Lester has at home. After Kathy loses her home, she makes poor choices to retrieve her home. She takes the law into her own hands and disregards the feeling and lives of the new owners of the home. Kathy’s actions are unacceptable, but her view of the American Dream is simplistic and
Character is developed through the journey and challenges of life. Outcomes do not form identity but the journey and growth from isolation defines an individual. “The Wondrous Woo” by Carrianne K.Y Leung emphasized how through the theme of isolation, an individual can rediscover themselves and become a better person. Seclusion targets the physical and emotional relationship humans have with their surroundings. Miramar Woo coped with the consequences of isolation by coming to age; from escaping the realm of childhood and ultimately, being her own responsible and courageous individual. First, isolation manipulated her relationship with her family, especially her siblings. Second, it affected her connection with her friends. Finally, it altered
Baum’s use of irony expresses his idea quite nicely. The irony, while obvious to the reader, is unbeknownst to the characters, so with the conclusion of the story, readers look for parallels in their own lives, aspirations that are fulfilled but not realized.
When reading ghost stories, a common occurrence or idea often takes place in all these stories. This occurrence is the repeated idea of the female character as either the victim of the supernatural occurrence or is the ghostly victim. The female characters are often the victim either in life, death, or both. This idea often coincides with the theme of isolation, as isolation is often a strong factor in the cause of the female character’s often untimely demise. Isolation in the ghost story genre is common as the mental isolation or physical isolation is from society and impacts emotional connection to others. The isolation mentally, physically and in some case both, causes the female character’s ultimate destruction in the end. Isolation is
Everyone dreams about something. However, it is important to know when the right time to dream is, and when to wake up. A major theme that Steinbeck conveys in the book Of Mice and Men is the pursuit of the American Dream. The book tells the story of two men trying to earn a better life. Their American Dream was to get their own place somewhere and live together. Although, through the characterization of Lennie, the symbolism of rabbits, and the setting of the book, Steinbeck is trying to convey that people cannot continue to live in a dream.
By the end of the novel Steinbeck illustrates the fragility of dreams by having many of the characters' dreams shattered. Still, even if dreams are often not realized, the book shows that men's aspirations give the strong drive to change the world and our lives for the
As the story, Of Mice and Men, ends, it it easy to realize how important the theme, characters, and symbols are and how they reflect ordinary life. The theme proves that no one can stay lonely forever, and everyone needs someone to be there for them. Many people could see themselves in the characters as they figure out who they really need. Lastly, as we hold onto our youth we also hold onto unrealistic dreams just like George. Before he can let go of the dreams, he must mature and get rid of the part that is holding him back,
In today’s society, people are so concerned about others people life’s that they lose the real meaning to theirs. A Good Man is Hard to Find is a great example of that. The short story was about a grandmother that lived her life pointing out other people’s defects but had not realized her own. The short story was first published in 1959, and it all started with a family planning a road trip to Florida. Although, the grandmother wanted to go to Tennessee, her son, Bailey insisted in going to Florida. As they were traveling to Florida, the grandmother started to talk about an old house that she thought was close by. As a result, it caused the family to deviate the road they were on due to a tantrum the kids made. The grandmother then realized that the house was in Tennessee and not in Georgia, as a result it caused Bailey to lose control of the car and crash. As they were checking if everyone were okay a car pulled over besides them, and 3 men got out all carrying guns. Quickly, the grandmother recognizes the driver as The Misfit, as a result it led to everyone dying in the hands of the driver with his two accomplices. What I got from the literature is that life is too short to live pointing out others defects. Before people point out others defects, they might want to take into consideration and examine their defects. For example, the grandmother was too concerned about others defects that she did not realize that her defects were just as bad since she was selfish, racist, and arrogant.
"…Races condemned to 100 years of solitude did not have a second opportunity on earth." These powerful last words of the novel One Hundred Years of Solitude ring true. The book demonstrates through many examples that human beings cannot exist in isolation. People must be interdependent in order for the race to survive.
There are many ways fear can control ones life. Fear can drive one to insanity, even. In Lucille Fletcher’s The Hitchhiker, the main character Ronald Adams, tries to prove to both the readers and other people that he is sane. As the events of the play continue, a hitchhiker seems to be following him around, which drives Ronald mad. Lucille uses many elements of her plot to craft an amazing, effective, and thrilling story.
